like i genuinely cannot overstate how terrifying it is, as an abuse survivor, to watch the sheer amount of long-term structural damage this show, its creators, and its fandom may have done to the fight to dismantle abuse culture in the arts in recent decades. this goes beyond bad representation and hurtful fictional messaging. this is real human beings strategically taking advantage of the zeitgeist around fandom discourse to softlaunch an admission of what they've done through fictional characters they can get people attached to first, and get enough cheers and flowers for it to drown out the voices saying 'i'm sorry, what the FUCK?'
and it WORKED. i have never in my life seen so many fucking ostensibly leftist people actively cheering for the success of I Beat and Choke and Shoot Women in the Face Because I Fucking Hate Them and Also I'm the Creator's Self-Insert: The Show at one time. it makes me sick at heart and nauseous with dread.
i hope this shit will end here. i hope people will wake up one day and go 'that was pretty fucked up, huh? let's not do that again,' and failing that they will at least let this be a flash in the pan and let it die. but i have a horrible sinking feeling that in actuality, over the coming years we are going to see a SURGE in this shit happening as creators realize that they don't even have to bother with writing a shitty notes app apology when they eventually get caught out for being an abuser, as long as they pull an anglerfish and slap a marketable, blorboable mascot's face onto their crimes for people to form a parasocial connection to, and act sufficiently smug and dismissive about ✨️discourse✨️ in the meantime.
