No, it is not “just a movie”
In response to people ive seen talk about how incredibles 2 is “just a movie” or that were overreacting to the fact it has lights that cause seizures, migraines and trigger chronically ill problems. Im writing this especially after seeing how shitty news outlets, twitter, facebook and other social media are handling the issue.
It is just a movie. To you. It is just another movie. To you. And the only reason you feel this way is because you can go see it. Is because you will not have a seizure.
This is not just a movie to me, not just because i cant see the movie, but because everyone on the team to make this movie had to agree to use lights that would potentially hurt people like me. And they agreed because no one cares about epileptic people, photosensitive people or seizure disorders, because they do not care about people like me.
Its not just a movie to me because this isnt my disability stopping me from something, this is abled people deciding that a few seconds of cool flashy action is more important than disabled people getting to do something, an abled person short lived entertainment is important than my illness, my safety and yes, my life. My disability didnt put the lights there when they didnt have to be. abled people did. Because. They. Could. Because. They. Dont. Care.
This is a movie i cant see now because ableism is so bad that they didnt even take into account epileptic people, or if they did, they didnt care about us. They didnt even care enough to put a warning.
It being incredibles is just the icing on top, as the original movie wanted to make people feel okay with who they are, preached that being different doesnt mean youre bad or that you should feel isolated or hide away, but apparently that doesnt apply to disability. As that is exactly what it makes me feel like doing.
This movie made me feel bad for being epileptic, this movie gave me one more limitation that i didnt need and didnt deserve, a feeling that i already get from my illness. I feel different, i feel isolated, i feel like i cant do anything because even simple things like movies is now something i cant enjoy, not because of my illness, but because my disability does not matter to people. And its uncared for the point where theyd chose flashy entertainment over my safety. Over my life.
This is not just a movie. This is a point. This is a statement. And this is something that needs to be talked about. Not just about the fact it triggers migraines and seizures, but what this is saying to disabled people.
