I've been enjoying Roddacember and I'll likely continue Deltoraposting from time to time here. I thought I'd share an old theory of mine from the Discord server as an interlude, for the Tumblr audience's perusal.
"Rowan heard a sound and looked up. The people on the street were parting to let a hurrying group through. A group of three, two men and a woman, wearing capes that flapped and snapped in the wind." (Rowan and the Keeper of the Crystal, Emily Rodda).
From the wiki: the Maris "have glistening, pale, hairless skin, ranging from white to blue-grey, and pale, flat, glassy eyes, usually expressionless." Essentially, they are amphibious in appearance, with webbed digits and other aquatic adaptations.
They are split into three clans, who all wear the same sleek uniforms, differing only in colour.
Given that they all wear the same clothing, and they lack hair, I actually find myself wondering about this particular scene - where Rowan identifies the three clan representatives as two men and a woman.
To my reckoning, since the Maris are all short and slim (frame isn't a reliable indicator) and their facial features are unusual to Rowan (faces aren't a reliable indicator), it has to be something both concrete and immediately familiar to Rowan. He doesn't even need to hear the voices of any of them before deciding.
There wasn't any time for, say, Perlain to instruct Rowan in the finer points of Maris gender markers; they barely speak at all on the journey there.
Logic thus forces me to conclude that Maris women have scrumptious gohobongeroos noticeable breasts.
Trust me, I am as displeased about this finding as you are, but I must follow where the evidence leads.
With this unbreakable conclusion in hand, we can also discern that the Maris are not a separate lineage developed from aquatic animals, but from the same evolutionary line as other humans and human-adjacent peoples on the world of Rodda.
A direct line of pure logic from one to the other.
