I think the only person I've met in real life with 100% career satisfaction was this gal I knew who was a presenter at a children's science museum and delivered every line like she was running a WWE match. What's the point of creating something if your fandom don't appreciate it.

What's the point of keeping on writing if most people won't bat an eye on your work.

I don't wanna be a crybaby but it's so disappointing to put my heart and soul into something for my otp just to be ignored in the end.

I have a lot of experience (10+ years) with fanfic writing and with the specific feeling that nobody read my writing or that I didn't get any/enough comments or interactions, and you have my deepest sympathy because I KNOW how painful it is.

I can't answer your question - should you give up? Only you can answer that. But I can tell you what I did to help ME answer that and maybe it will help you.

My advice: go back and read some of the stories you wrote at least a year ago (or, 6 months ago if you haven't been writing very long). Especially pick the ones you were really excited to post back then. Does your story delight you now, all this time later? Is there a theme or idea or sentence that makes you happy? Even if you are cringing at some of the mistakes or skills you have since improved upon, is there something in your story that you forgot about and now remember with glee?

If so, keep writing.

@sharkaria you are a gem, a literal gem. pretty sure you, single-handedly, will be the reason fandom continues to exist for the next decade or more. you give the best pep talks on this subject; no one else compares.

also, OP: i have been (am?) where you are, and my solution has been to come up with an idea that absolutely delights me. will anyone else delight in it? maybe, maybe not. but it’s a combination of my favorite things--tropes, musical influences, genre bullshit--and it’s my little piece of morale. i had to come up with something that made me so goddamn happy to to have exist that THAT was the payoff, more than anyone else’s adoration or validation. is it working? TBD. but even thinking about it has helped me to cope better with writing as a construct.
