Movie Night Report: “Soylent Green”
An all-time favorite.
Certainly not a favorite because of the main actor.
I have never been a fan of Charleton Heston even though I have seen and enjoyed many of his movies. It is just one of those things where I am not attracted to the man at all.
I love how it takes place in the future (last year to us, now) when it was made in ‘73.
I always am fascinated by how they see the future that is already behind us. Sure, there was the omnipresent doom and gloom of over population/pollution issues. Those are a given. Inescapable.
But I like the other things. How they imagine the future looks like for clothing, music, architecture and the dystopian breakdown of society.
A couple things of note: the vision of a video game console. And the game itself. A bit of a miss on that prediction.
The police phone call box still extant.
I thought the treatment of women as ‘furniture’ was a hoot.
My favorite was just visual candy probably not noticed by many but in the foreground of one distant scene was a Brubaker Box.
I believe I may have opined on this particular vehicle in past missives, but I just love that van. I am not sure many were made but I am a huge fan of its looks.
I was so sad when Sol ‘went home’ although the process was quite moving with the beautiful music, especially Beethoven’s (Beef Groover’s) Pastoral #6 Symphony.
Too, it was very sad that Edward G. Robinson passed away for real quite shortly after filming that scene.
One thing Buddy laughed at (to which I joined in) was when Thorn went to his boss at the police HQ and mentioned the ‘furniture’ at the deceased gentleman’s domicile, and described her breasts using the Monty Python manual pantomime of “huge tracts of land” with an accompanying oral description of them as ‘grapefruit.’
Buddy said as he looked (hopefully adoringly) at mine, “they must have different grapefruit in the future.”
Another classic under our (previously removed) belts. Another favorite movie.
Always a pleasure to relive the great ones.
And relieve a normal one.
