Thoughts on TTPD and how it relates to Dead Poets Society and queerness
(Spoilers for DPS ahead.)
I saw DPS a long time ago and rewatched it before TTPD came out, thinking there could be a connection just by virtue of the similar titles. (This connection was, of course, confirmed with the inclusion of Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles of DPS in the Fortnight music video.) The thing is, before I rewatched DPS, I remembered that Neil Perry kills himself because he is gay. It had been a long time since Iâd seen it, and that was what I remembered. While rewatching it, I kept waiting for Neil to try to kiss a boy or come out to his dad or something. But he doesnât. No one in the film ever says ANYTHING overtly about queerness. There are references to Whitman and Tchaikovsky (both presumed to be queer). Neil wants to be an actor and gets his start playing a literal fairy (Puck in A Midsummer Nightâs Dream). But never does he overtly express any attraction to someone of the same sex, and never does he identify himself as gay or queer. But as a teenager watching this movie, the implied queerness was so obvious to me that I later REMEMBERED THE MOVIE WRONG.
And thatâs the same way that TTPD is queer. The queerness isnât overt. Itâs not obvious or clear to everyone who listens to it. But itâs there, baked in, and undeniable when you really dissect the lyrics. Queer themes of the world not accepting your love, feeling trapped, the closet, religious trauma, and feeling judged are obvious in the album. And the genius of Taylorâs lyrics is that they can be attributed to Matty Healy (A Manâ˘ď¸), they can be attributed to queerness and the queer experience, and, I think, they can be attributed to both of those things at the same time.
On Defensiveness and Anti-Gaylorism
Of course, plenty of people who refuse to see Taylor Swift as queer are just plain homophobic. But I think thereâs another segment of anti-Gaylors that we donât talk about.
I think sometimes straight swifties are so aggressive about Taylor Swift being straight because they see queerness as this ââşâ§cool, exclusive clubâ§ââş that they donât get to be a part of, and theyâre afraid that if Taylor Swift is queer then sheâs yet another member of the cool exclusive club. They want her to be in THEIR club, because all the cool celebrities are queer, but at least the straights have Taylor Swift. So they get defensive about the possibility of her not being straight, because they donât want to lose her as âone of us.â When Taylor Swift goes to the Queer Side, all the other straight people become less cool.
Less defensive straight swifties are often open to the possibility of her being queer - or can even see the signs themselves. Thatâs wonderful, and we appreciate those people. âĄ
And gay swifties who call gaylors âdelusionalâ are using this as a way to defend themselves against homophobia and be accepted by the dominant group (straight people). Theyâre saying, âIâm gay, but not THAT kind of gayâ - itâs like cis gay people who are transphobic, or gay people who donât associate with gay CULTURE. The kind of people who identify with âgay but not queer.â âIâm gay, but Iâm not a WEIRD gay.â Thatâs internalized homophobia.
Anyway, I feel bad for these Defenders of Taylor Swiftâs Straightness. I think theyâre navigating a world where queer folks have fought tooth and nail to make queerness more acceptedâand celebrated. To lots of people, Pride looks like a big, colorful party. And queer people deserve that space! But I get that some straight people might feel left out, and may feel disappointed when their fave gets to join the party and they donât.
Yeah I can definitely see this. I think they also have trouble identifying with her music if they start to accept she's not straight (which is a little taste of what we experience with the enormous lack of queer representation in our heteronormative and cisnormative culture) and they've identified with her for so long that losing that connection is terrifying to them.
Yes!!! They canât deal with the possibility of her becoming less relatable to them. Itâs the same reason people freak out when someone suggests Taylor Swift might use drugs or smoke weed or whatever. Maybe she does! But some people get so defensive about that because it makes her less relatable to them and they are desperate to see themselves in her and in her music. So if she does something that they wouldnât do, they lose a part of that âsheâs just like meâ mentality. Which is scary and sad for people!
quick question have you ever gone outside and touched grass once in your life
Yes, Iâm interested in feminist and queer studies as they relate to popular culture, Iâm interested in the effect of defenses and maladaptive coping skills on mental health, AND I spend time in the great outdoors! Thanks for your question though!

Okay I just wanna post this on the *tiny* chance Iâm right...
Have we considered âseashoreâ as the name of the hypothetical third album?
- canât take credit for this idea but itâs one of many 8-letter words that end in -ore (like folklore and evermore). I know Taylor loves her water imagery too. This got me thinking...
- random bird noises + Taylorâs brotherâs Eagles Instagram caption -> âmy eagles T-shirt hanging from the door -> gold rush (third track on evermore)
- 3rd track on folklore -> the last great american dynasty
- BOTH track 3âs take place at the sea coast - âeyes like sinking ships on waters so inviting I almost jump inâ/âcoastal townâ and âsalt box house on the coastâ/âfacing the rocks staring out at the midnight seaâ
seashore

Now Iâm not going to get TOO excited, because I donât want to get my hopes up (Narrator: âHer hopes were, in fact, up.â)
Okay wait, what if the third album, âseashore,â hasnât been released because itâs the one thatâs explicitly gay. What if âseashoreâ refers to Big Sur.
Wordsworthâs most famous poem, âDaffodils,â which is about the Lakes District, features the line âA poet could not but be gayâ and I KNOW thatâs not what he MEANT but itâs fun to think of Taylor reading the poem and being like âRELATABLE CONTENT, WILLIAMâ

The Gaylor Issue: An Attempt at Nuance from a Very Tired Queer
I feel like the Gaylor issue is so divisive and polarizing in the Swiftie fandom. I want to make space for nuance, acceptance, and a more relaxed conversation. And I want to make space for fans who donât fit on either extreme end of the issue.
On one side, you have diehard Gaylors who insist that Taylor is OBVIOUSLY gay and that all her âboyfriends,â including Joe, have been beards. See also: Kaylor, Swiftgron, etc.
On the other side, you have the people who insist that Gaylors are delusional, her relationship with Joe is real, and Taylor is nothing more than an ally to the LGBTQ community. Side note: I really dislike the term âhetlorâ because a) it feels mean and gross when said in a demeaning way, and b) believing sheâs straight is the default so I feel like giving them their own term is in the realm of âstraight pride.â
Sprinkled between these camps are the people who say stuff like, âItâs weird and gross to speculate about real peopleâs sexuality. Taylor is a private person and it isnât our place to talk about her love life.â Or, âSpeculating about peopleâs queerness is bad because it forces people out of the closet before theyâre ready.â Which is very kind.
I feel like I donât fit into either of these three groups.
Saying âTaylorâs relationship with Joe is fakeâ feels really dismissive of bisexuality. Bi people are the biggest segment of the LGBTQ community and somehow it seems like people forget they exist because they float in that middle ground. When we view the world through binaries, bi people seem like theyâre full of contradictions. But, like all people, bi people just contain multitudes.
Saying Taylor is straight seems downright ridiculous, at least to me. The most obvious, âno heterosexual explanation for thisâ pieces of evidence are: the song Paris, the lyric âI swear you could hear a hairpin drop,â the 13 in northern Michigan in the Lavender Haze music video, and the idea that gay pride âmakes me ME.â Here are some things I believe to be true: 1) If Taylor Swift were straight, sheâd be too good of an ally to queerbait, and 2) Taylor Swift is too smart/well-read to make queer references accidentally.
The thing about the âdonât speculate about her personal lifeâ argument is that speculating about Taylor Swiftâs personal life pays her bills. Yes, sheâs making and selling art. But she has chosen a life in the spotlight. She has consciously decided to sell her [personhood, brand, name, soul, whatever you want to call it]. She has chosen NOT to âtake the money and her dignity and get the hell out.â She COULD choose the rose garden over Madison Square. But every day, she chooses not to. On the one hand, this âdonât speculateâ argument is very noble. But thereâs some part of me that wonders if the folks in this camp see themselves as potential future friends of Taylor and think that being speculative ruins their chances at that, ruins their chances of attending a secret session, etc. Itâs sweet and kind AND it feels a little âpick me.â Here are some things I believe to be true: 1) If Taylor Swift were straight, she wouldnât be offended that people think she is queer. 2) If Taylor Swift is queer, sheâs not offended that people think she is queer.
And then thereâs this weird, in-between camp that I fall into. Personally, I think Taylor Swift is a queer woman who is currently in a legitimate, long term relationship with her boyfriend Joe Alwyn. Do I think that she had relations of some kind with Karlie Kloss? Yeah, probably! Do I think that she is afraid to come out for fear of outing past lovers? Yeah, probably! Do I think she is afraid to come out for fear of alienating part of her fanbase? Yeah, probably! Do I think she is afraid to come out because she feels like her current relationship with a man will âdelegitimizeâ her queerness? Definitely.
I want a label for people who have this opinion, because I see SO much hatred toward âGaylorsâ from âHetlorsâ and vice versa. I feel like I have a nuanced, reasonable, rational take on the situation. And I want to be able to communicate this nuanced take with a label.
Here are my suggestions.
Nuance Gaylor
Pro-Joe Gaylor
We Contain Multitudes Gaylor
Gaylor (Joeâs Version)
Please donât be mad at me Gaylor
Anyway, thank you for reading this. Please feel free to chime in but please donât send me hate mail.
Well anyway, Taylor and Joe arenât together anymore but I still think their relationship was real and delegitimizing it contributes to bi erasure!
Another point: I think Taylor Swift being bisexual is the simplest explanation that allows for ALL of the things we have observed (queer flagging, kissgate, being in a relationship with a man, etc.) to be true. It requires the least amount of assumptions. Itâs the Occamâs Razor of Gaylorism.
In light of the toe breakup, my label suggestions now include:

Does Taylor know sheâs playing The Very First Night and The Way I Loved You on May 14th?
Sometimes the rats in my brain come together and start yelling âYEARNINGâ and in trying to appease them I ask âFOR WHATâ but they are too small so all they can say is âYEARNINGâ which is a very big word for such a tiny creature, even collectively
I loved this visual so much I had to doodle it.

You seem to not be aware, but a lot of Gaylors actually don't think her relationship with Joe is fake. A lot of Gaylors think she is bi or pan or doesn't label herself or whatever. The word "gay" is literally an umbrella term. I basically just think she is fruity. I have my doubts if she's really with Joe (just because they have like zero chemistry and Calvin was 100% a beard but way more convincing), but actually couldn't care less who she's with. Been on here for a long time and know I'm not the only one feeling this way.
PS: Please don't call being straight the "default". That hurt. It's not. Rest was well written. All the best to you in figuring it out.
Iâd like to respond to a couple things here.
First of all thank you for your comment and I hope you see this response!
Iâm aware that lots of Gaylors think her relationship with Joe is real, but it seems like the loudest and most well-known Gaylors are on the more extreme end of that spectrum, and a lot of hate towards Gaylors in general is actually a response to that more extreme viewpoint. (And I will say, this is definitely the case on Twitter, where, as a rule, the platform lacks nuance and therefore doesnât encourage healthy dialogue.)
Secondly, I just want to clarify that of course I know gay is a catch-all term and therefore âGaylorâ can be an umbrella term. The problem is that a lot of people donât treat it as an overarching community with lots of flavors. They assume that all of us believe the same things as the most extreme of us.
Lastly, when I said that assuming Taylor is straight is âthe defaultâ I meant that in a CRITICAL way. Assuming people are straight SHOULDNâT be the default, but because we live in a very heteronormative society, it is. But I am absolutely not endorsing that as a societal assumption! Hope that makes more sense!
lately iâve been hearing a lot of people say they love taylorâs music but donât like her so much as a person and i canât help but take it personally fksjfj
This is just another flavor of âthereâs just something about her I donât like, and I canât quite put my finger on itâ [the fact that sheâs a woman]
