I really don't understand why a common argument against (anglo-speaking) women keeping their surname after marriage because "the names they have before still belongs to a man, it was theirs fathers, not theirs".
I mean, sure, it was your father's surname first, but you have had it since you were born and it belongs to you. It's a bit like your first name who was your parents choice of name, not yours (and you can dislike it) but now it is yours. Because you have had it all your life.
...and also, the men's surname too belongs to theirs father. We can instaurate a discussion about why mother can't pass down their surname, but I don't understand why people who always use this card when advocating about why it is meaningless for women to keep their original surname (like, the one they were born with) after they marry, and not when it comes to naming theirs own children. (I know why. It's because they don't actually care about matrilenear legacy and so on, they only care about excuses of why patriarchal tradition should not be changed. Everytime someone start saying "but what about children's surnames?" in a discussion about why women shouldn't change theirs surnames, they are doing the game of throwing "but what about these others issue?" when someone is trying to solve a specific, easily solveable issue.)
I also don't understand the whole framing of "going from your father surname to your husband surname". If this surname you were born with isn't yours, but your father's (and your grandfather's first) then the surname you are changing it to also isn't your husband's, but your husband's father (and grandfather's) surname.
But of course why things men got from their dad/their parents belong to them but things daughters got from their dad never belongs truly to them, even if they have had since they were born.

i don't really want to weight in on the "using big words in your writing is ableist" discourse happening on tiktok because i'm like 90% certain it's an anti-intellectual psyop to stir up drama in online circles to promote the use of ai to summarize literally everything and thus feeding the LLMs and lowering the populace's mistrust of such tools but i also have to say: dictionaries and thesauruses are the most accessible they've ever been. if you use an e-reader of any kind you can look up a word without leaving the page. there's a plethora of online dictionaries and if you just type a word + "meaning" into google it'll usually give you a definition. we used to have pocket dictionaries we used when reading in class. i have two on my shelf right now that i used in high school. stop letting the fascists purposefully misuse anti-ableism rhetoric to trick you into never thinking again.
