I do love though that so many of Jean's survival mechanisms and trauma responses are harmful to others. He's not a docile sweet little uwu boy, he's someone who's been through a lot and survived it by, among other things, helping torture someone, and now occasionally reacts instinctively to triggers by being verbally cruel or physically attacking others. He's really messy and while he does tend towards staying silent and dealing with trauma by hurting himself more than anyone else, he doesn't always. cause like you do what you have to to survive but recovery can be messy and inconsistent too.

The way Nora writes different kinds of trauma responses is something I deeply appreciate because it's accurate for what these people went through. Kevin's deep obsession with giving everything he has to exy as well as his functioning alcoholism. Neil's deeply seated fear of authority (especially from middle aged men) and his penchance for running. Andrew keeping everyone at arms length and his violent tendencies because he's not always in control of his own body or mind. Jean and the way he either fawns or lashes out because he had to utilize both in order to survive evermore. Renee turning to god in a desperate bid to repent despite the fact that what happened to her wasn't her fault. Jeremy and his secrecy with what happened to him, the way he exudes perfect sunshine boy but seems to have a bad relationship with cops. They are realistic victims with very real coping mechanisms that align well with the things they've been through. It's made apparent through the series how important therapy can be, but also, like in Andrew's case, how it is not a simple fix. Thank you Nora.

AFTG is a very good example of narrator bias, because if we didn’t get a book from Jean and Jeremy’s POVs we would have no way of knowing the world does not actually in fact revolve around one Andrew Minyard

Jean Moreau is so in love with the world. When he is confronted about the ravens he looks out of windows, as if to assure himself he is no longer in a dark basement. He steals the photo of Renee by a rainbow, and rainbows are the first thing he adds to his list of good things/reasons to live. During his first walk in LA, Jeremy is distracted by the "blatant curiousity in Jean's wandering stare". He looks out over the ocean from the back of Cat's motorcycle and thinks "Oh. It's so big." When Wayne, a Raven, dies, Jean wonders "was there no sunlight where he lived, no open sky to consider in dizzying wonder?"
