Josephine Baker in Zouzou (1934)
The answer to "How did these Ancient People do this????" is basically always
1. A lot of dudes. Just a ton of fucking people from beginning to end of the process.
2. Ancient people weren't stupid, they just figured shit out the same way we do: fuck around until you find out.
3. We're gonna plan this out and it's gonna take ten fucking years, and you will cope.
4. Sticks and string are surprisingly versatile and can be used for a variety of purposes, like moving stuff and making sure things are even and go in the spot you wanted to put them in!
5. I want to make this easier and more efficient to move. If I put this on the round thing and push, it will move. If I put this in water, it will move. If I get some animals and rope and have a whole bunch of them drag it, it will move. All of these things are a better option than one guy trying to pick the whole fucking thing up.
Sometimes the answer is also
6. They weren't even ancient, they just weren't white.
let's play a mini game!
here is a clip from My Fair Lady, starring Jeremy Brett. without looking it up, let's figure out who is dubbing him based on another part the same voice actor played!
who is singing for Jeremy Brett?

Captain Von Trapp from The Sound of Music
Prince Philip from the Disney Sleeping Beauty
Robin Hood from the Disney Robin Hood

Anybody else desperately miss summer reading programs from like. 20 years ago.
for everyone telling me to check my library of COURSE I have, those are what I’m talking about! But the adult ones my library runs 1) are through an app 2) don’t have any prizes, or the prizes are raffle tickets 3) aren’t themed around Space or Castles or Dinosaurs or Pirates, the only themes I will accept
and 4) don’t start until 3 weeks from now
used my brain too much and now it hurts

Verified: Microsoft 365 gets massive 45% price hike — and it's all to do with AI tools (Tom's Guide - January 17, 2025)
oopsie i tripped and spilled my link to archive dot org's downloadable copy of Microsoft office suite for 2007, which features no AI tools and is a powerful word processor that still holds up just fine on windows 10!
Updated with working 32bit link
i would trust weird al with my drink at a party. granted he may put one of those capsules that expands into a sponge animal in it,
sorry i had a vision and i just had to draw it

#watch grand prix with me. watch grand prix with me. hypnosis beam attack#i love sharing james garner driving facts. they put the lead actors in racecars and the one that would#be able to drive best was going to get the one on one training with the race driving consultant on set#garner was the best driver. he later became the namesake of a stunt driving turn (the j turn)#and was involved in actual racing for a little while (mainly as a sponsor and for race publicity etc etc#BUT he was the indy 500 pace (safety) driver for a few years which requires the technical and#operational skills that actual drivers have as well#the hottest thing about this movie is actually the cinematography and editing of race footage#but also. the production details fuck me up. this movie came out the same year the mclaren team started#james garmer drove a mclaren car for this.#first person race footage in this is some of the earliest f1 in car camera test material#rereading some of the info on wikipedia so i dont present false memory and seeing#bedford in fact could not drive at all and was exclusively in cars for closeup shots Only#i think i need to rewatch grand prix who will watch it with me (via @joshwashington)
i will watch it with you i loved this film

we’re so lucky that gilgamesh survived and is a banger. can you imagine if we found the oldest written human story ever recorded and it sucked balls.
watching grand prix and they dubbed toshiro mifune with the guy from rocky and bullwinkle. crimes
it annoys me that (almost?) all of mifune's lines in english language films were dubbed because he!! memorized!! how the lines were supposed to sound!!! even though he didn't speak english!
i think i'd be so offended if that happened to me tbh. all that work for almost nothing :/
i was literally about to reblog this asking if anybody knew the lore here because yeah, he very clearly is saying the english lines—the dub lines up with his mouth fine, he's clearly sounding it out. why not just keep him? why dub it??
IDK the specific lore here, but is it possible producers thought his accent was too hard to understand?
I know Ursula Andress was dubbed in some of her movies, including Dr. No, for that reason. Also, when MGM remade The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in 1962 they infamously hired Angela Lansbury to dub all of Ingrid Thulin's lines in the movie after poor test screenings. So it does seem like "This foreign-born star needs a slightly less foreign sounding voice" was a common assumption in 1960s Hollywood.
without hearing the raw dialogue it’s hard to know, but he certainly seems to be doing ok—I can lip read him without the dub. but who knows! would love to watch Grand Prix (the unadulterated Toshiro Mifune version) if it exists somewhere.
