Ethanâs fingerâs drummed nervously on this thigh as he watched her expression change from confusion to shock and then to one he couldnât quite read. Ethan couldnât imagine what was going through her head, and the silence that she was giving him left him with his own scary thoughts. What if she didnât want this? Noelle and him, then what? He couldnât be a dad and a mom; he was hardly cutting it as the first. Ethan needed Monica and Monica needed him, it was just how they worked, he relied on her so heavily and he was just now realizing just how much as he was presented with the chance that she might not ever feel that way towards him again.
âEllieâs first birthday was about a month ago,â Ethan said, holding his breath as he awaited yet another reaction. She had to be doing the math in her head, and the numbers wouldnât sound good from any point of view. âSheâs really, really something,â Â he heard himself saying, âSheâs a genius, and I know thatâs what every parent is supposed to say but sheâs so damn smart,â Ethan smiled to himself, âAnd sheâs stunning, just breathtaking, she looks just like you- You never agree with me but she really does, ask anyone,â He realized that heâd been rambling to fill the awkward silence that he was dreading, âUm, but yeah- Sheâs great..â
He could see the questions eating at her through her eyes, but the question that left Monicaâs lips first was the last thing Ethan expected to hear. She really wanted to see the little girl that stopped her from pursuing her dream as a lawyer? The one that was stuck with the popcorn boy as her dad? Ethan sat silent, mouth agape before snapping it shut, ungracefully standing out of his seat and nodding. âYeah, sure- Sheâd love that,â He faked a smile, but he knew she wouldnât buy it either, âJust, I donât know- Sheâs gonna be really confused, scared, yâknow, So uh-âEthan shook his head, how did he tell her to act like a mother when she didnât know how to be one anymore? âNevermind, Iâll just go get her.â He left the room with shaking legs, fearing the confusion that his daughter would be thrusted into when her mom didnât do the things she was supposed to do, didnât say the things she was supposed to say.
Ethan walked down the hallway like a zombie, he was finally able to drop the act heâd been putting on in front of Monica and he was sure he reassembled someone whoâd just seen a ghost. He rubbed his hands over his eyes again and again, taking several deep breaths and muttering false words of encouragement to himself, âCâmon, Eth, pull it together.â Finally, he walked into the waiting room where his best friends and daughter awaited him, Salem stood up immediately, rushing towards him to envelop him in a hug and asking question after question with BJ right behind her, âJust- I gotta take Ellie, Iâll explain later, okay?â And he left them with just as many answers as they had before.
Ethan walked into the room that held Monica and Noelle reached happily towards Monica, âMama!â She squealed, reaching her arms out, âYeah, baby, thatâs mama.â Ethan said quietly. Â He walked back to his seat beside Monica, âMon, this is Noelle,â Ethan held his breath; Ellie was tugging against his hold, confusion finally reaching her features. He wasnât sure if he should give into Noelle and pass her over to Monica or if he should wait for Monica to process this, Ethan just had no clue on how to go about this. âSo, how are you taking this right now? Whatâre you thinking about?â Ethan asked her, âYou can tell me, you can trust me.â He added, but was distracted as Noelle began wailing for Monica, âMama, mama!â She yelled, and Ethan couldnât stop himself from scooting nearer to the bed and holding Noelle closer towards Monica, âYou wanna hold her?â
