Are you sure about that? My life seems a bit less pessimistic when you arenât in it, Red.
Oh, I'm positive. You wouldn't last two days without me, dimples. Just admit it.
My New Yearâs resolution was to have the cat stop dragging things in, but here you are. Hey.
Stop kidding yourself, Baker. Your life wouldn't be complete without me.
I feel like itâs been January for six years.

Let Me Talk To Her || Salem & Monica
Monicaâs brow rose at the first bit of information that Salem confessed; she hated it? Her expression settled as Sal continued, the knowledge that she made Ethan happy confusing her and relaxing her all at once. Monica couldnât help but smile as the redhead talked, she always had this talent for talking. Monica could remember before Sal would take her to some parties, theyâd be getting ready together and Sal would be going on and on about who to avoid and who was decent and why these two people werenât talking. Monica liked listening to her talk, she always had; Salem was just a naturally good speaker, and an entertaining one.
A bittersweet smile spread over Monicaâs face as Salem mentioned Ellie, her eyes dropping in thought briefly as she thought back to the beautiful brown-eyed little girl sheâd met earlier. It was hard to believe that was her daughter, though the connection the two shared was obviously there because Monica found it all too easy to interact with the small child. But still, how were you supposed to believe that something happened when you had no recollection of anything involving it? Monicaâs smile turned to a softer, more content smile at Salemâs mention of them being sisters. It was nice to see Monica hadnât totally alienated everyone over the past few years. After her big blow up with Aubrey, the brunette never expected to trust anyone again, let alone become so close with a whole group of them.Â
With a furrowed brow, Monica tilted her head slightly before looking down at her chest. Curiously, her finger went to curl around the collar of her shirt, pulling it back to gaze down at her chest. The first thing she saw was the bruising from the accident, her skin painted shades of blue and purple and red. But then she focused, looking to her nipples to see the jewelry. âOh.. my god. Did we do this together?â She asked, looking up with wide eyes, amusement glinting within them. âThanks, Sal.â Monica said with a small smile, taking in everything she had said. It was a lot, but the girl had done a great job of summarizing it all. For the most part, Monica could piece together at least a general idea of what her life had come to. How sheâd gotten close with Ethan, and fallen pregnant, causing her to not go to school, and drop out of work. There were just a few pieces thatâŚ.werenât exactly clicking.Â
"Can I⌠ask a question? Or two..really?" Monica asked, looking to the girl. "I mean, I figure I stopped working because daycare is expensive but⌠I donât know if that makes sense in my head really. Why did I stop working?" It was a perplexing thought that Monica had been curious over. She was a workaholic, and had been working since she was 15 or 16. Why would she just stop? "But uh⌠the more⌠important question, I guess.. WhyâŚdid I move out? I mean I understand moving out when the baby was born. But before that? I mean you said I was staying with Ethan before that. I donât⌠Why would I leave my parents?" That was the real daunting question. Monicaâs parents meant everything to her, and she couldnât wrap her head around the idea of having to leave them before she really needed to, especially with her fatherâs diabetes and their busy work schedules; her parents needed and relied on her to help keep the house in order, whether it was cooking or cleaning, or paying the bills and balancing the checkbook. She was the one that kept that house running.Â
Salem's eyebrows wiggled as Monica looked under her shirt, she laughed softly "Yeah, yeah we did it together. It was so fun, too. We hid it from the boys, I just kept telling BJ that I had some big surprise for him." A genuine smile spread its way across her lips, "It was the greatest look I've ever seen on his face once I showed him." she felt like she had done someone so important, like she had helped Monica in some way.Â
Her expression changed a bit as Monica spoke again, she nodded her head slightly before the girl asked her questions. Salem's tongue slid against her lips, breathing in and adjusting the way she sat in the chair before answering. "Well, um." Sal swallowed hard, eyebrows furrowed, and her eyes looking past Monica.
"Well, um. You stopped working a little before you had Ellie. There was something wrong, I can hardly remember." Her head shook slightly, "You were at work and you were in a lot of pain.. I think I was at work, maybe. BJ ended up calling me. You had called Ethan and told him something was wrong. I think maybe you were having contractions? I'm so sorry, I can't remember exactly what happened." She chewed on her lip a bit, "We spent awhile in the hospital, everything was alright in the end. It was just a lot of stress on the baby." She nodded, pushing a smile onto her face, "I think we all spent most of our time convincing you to take off work. It was for your health, really. But you were really worried about money. Which is understandable. I get it." She let out a long breath, "But it was for your health."
Salem chewed on her lip a bit more, mulling over how to tell Monica about the situation with her parents. "The situation with your parents is a little bit um.. harder to explain, I guess." She pressed her lips together, her eyes finding Monica's.
"When your parents found out that you were pregnant, um.. Your dad-- kicked you out." Her eyes dropped, her fingers toying with the hem of her shirt. Salem didn't want to mention the thoughts of abortion that Monica had, that her parents had put into her head and all of the added details. She didn't feel like it was her story to tell, but for the time being Salem was the only person Monica was wanting to listen to. "It took them a little while to come around to Noelle, but they did.. They did." She nodded again, trying to smile at the girl.
Bought Ellie all of these Christmas presents, and sheâs a million times more interested in the boxes they came in.
Why have toys when you can climb in boxes. Climbing is fun
Let Me Talk To Her || Salem & Monica
Monicaâs nose crinkled in response just as Salemâs did, the corner of her mouth pulling up into a smile at the sight of how they still seemed to be in sync. Sheâd enjoyed their friendship once, even if it wasnât exactly the longest one. And despite the girls being rather different, they were also rather similar. âMoney in your pocket is always a good thing.â Monica nodded agreeably, her lips quirking to the side as she remembered Ethan saying something earlier. âThough, Ethan said something about.. inheritance? I think?â Her brow furrowed at the end of the question, eyes moving to the side as she thought before shrugging it off. âMaybe not. My head is clearly⌠a little off.âÂ
Raising her eyebrows at the question, a sigh left her lips, nodding. âYeah, like..  May or June, I think. Iâm still trying to pin point my⌠last memory. I think it was the⌠end of May? Like I remember graduating. Which was the beginning of May so.. Somewhere around there.â  An exasperated sigh left Monicaâs lips as her eyes seemed to look out into nothingness, searching her mind for a moment before glancing to Salem and shrugging. âEh. Whatever.â A grateful smile spread over her lips at Salemâs offer, nodding as the gratitude shown in her eyes. âYes, please, fill in everything you can. I hate not knowing things. And I mean, itâs notâŚexactly that I donât trust him.. itâs just.. I donât.. heâs so nervous and.. trying to tell me everything he does, it seems like heâs so unsure of things and I just⌠donât know.âÂ
"Uh.." She tried to think of questions to ask, her eyes darting around as she thought. "I mean.. what about us? Did we.. become friends again? I mean, Iâd think so, since youâre hereâŚand Ethan said we live together? Howâd that happen? And something about⌠B..J? Isnât that the kid from like⌠middle school.. or ninth grade? That nerdy kid who⌠rigged the vending machine?" Ethan hadnât elaborated on a ton at the time, and Monicaâs fingers went to her temple to rub gently as she tried to process the information. "Um.. What about.. Ethan and I? Can you tell me about us? I just.. I feel like getting a third party perspective on that all⌠might help. I donât even know.. anything really." Monicaâs words almost seemed desperate. She hated not knowing anything, it seemed as if she was grasping for knowledge, and memories, that werenât even there.
Salem nodded at her words, a smile playing on her lips. "I can definitely fill you in. Let's start with you and Ethan." The girl straightened her body up and smoothed out her top. "I don't remember, really when you guys got together I just know that I hated it. I don't know if it was jealousy because I used to think that Ethan was someone I should be with or if I was just bitter because of what had happened with us. I just remember hating it." She let out a laugh and shook her head slightly, the thought of her being with anyone but BJ at this point blew her mind. The thought of her being with Ethan-- god, now that was a joke. "I've been friends with Ethan since I was a toddler and I've seen him go through plenty of relationships, but I have never seen someone make him as happy as you do." She rolled her eyes slightly, crossing her legs.
"Christ, I would have to put up with him yammering about you all the time. And I was just sulking about thinking that I had just lost some great love. It was ridiculous." Her elbow now rested on her leg, her chin in her hand and her eyes were fixed on Monica. She felt like she was carrying on and on, that maybe she was boring the girl. But Sal wanted to make sure she filled her in properly. "So there I was, totally pissed about you two and then BJ moved back. The nerdy boy from middle school, with the vending machines and all that. He started working with you at The Cheesecake Factory and I fell in love with him. He made me realize that I never really had the feelings I thought I had for Ethan and once I realized that and let it go, I just welcomed you back into my life. Well, that and you were really sick. Which turned out to be a pregnancy, which lead to my beautiful niece, Ellie-- you saw her earlier, right? She's perfect and let me tell you, you're super mom." Salem flashed her a smile before shifting in her seat, "But I'm getting off topic, let's keep this chronological, yeah?"
"So you got pregnant, and you were staying at Ethan's house before and after you gave birth. We started spending a lot of time together, so, yeah, we definitely became friends again. More like sisters." Salem laughed, trying to muffle it with her hand clasped over her lips, "Check your nipples if you want to see exactly how close we are these days" She jokingly raised her eyes seductively and leaned back in the chair, sitting her arms on the arm rests. "I've spent the last two and a half years watching you and Ethan grow together, learn together and coexist. It's a good relationship and I'm very lucky to have you guys around me." She smiled sweetly, she hoped that Monica could read the sincerity on her lips. Part of her felt as if she was going to overwhelm the girl but if Monica wanted to be filled in on everything that Salem could fill her in on, then she would do just that. Her fingers tapped against the chair's armrest gently before sitting up quickly and leaning forward,Â
"Oh! I forgot something! We live together. Huge house. My grandpa died, actually. He was really the only person in my family that likes me. So in his will he left it to me, completely paid off and it's us four-- You, Eth, Beej and I, plus the baby and two dogs. Peanut, who is yours and Ethan's dog and Zeus, who is 100% mine but prefers BJ to me any day.. I'm rambling, I'm so sorry.." She paused, taking in a few breaths before speaking softly, "I know it might seem like so much is going on and I know this isn't what you had in mind for yourself but things are good right now. Well, mostly. I mean.. Before this at least.." She sighed, the last sentence nearly coming out as a whisper.
Let Me Talk To Her || Salem & Monica
Monica was exhausted, to say the least. She couldnât really piece together anything, even after what Ethan had told her, and everything that had gone on since she woken up; Monica was still struggling to believe that any of it was real. It just seemed like a bad joke, and she was half expecting Ashton Kutcher to jump out of the hospital bathroom and tell her sheâd been punked. With a frustrated sigh, Monica pinched the bridge of her nose between her thumb and index finger, massaging the area gently as she tried to relieve some tension in her body.Â
The sound of a door opening pulled her back, looking up to see a familiar redhead peeking into the room. If the popcorn boy hadnât told her everything he did when she woke up, Monica wouldâve assumed Sal was here to push past the large discrepancy that had happened between them and was here because she cared, and was worried. But now Monica was unsure of almost every aspect of her life. âHey Sal.â She said softly, sitting up a little more, her face twitching as she winced in pain from sitting up too fast, before turning to look at the girl. âHow.. are you?â She bit her lip, tucking a dark lock of her hair behind her ear as she tried to figure out what exactly was the right thing to say in this situation.Â
Her fingers adjusted the sheets, bringing her eyes back to the redhead and managing a tiny smile. âIâm guessing you.. spoke to popco-.. err.. Ethan, huh?â She asked, scratching the back of her neck before dropping her hands. Things had ended so weirdly between the two girls, and it felt like it was just a few months ago that Sal had been on top of Monica in a guest bedroom.. probably because it was just a few months ago. Or at least, in Monicaâs mind it was. Itâd probably been about three years at this point, but Monica couldnât fill that gap. âUh.. so.. howâs⌠life been, I guess, these past couple years. Are you still at AMC?â
Salem watched the girl adjust herself and tuck her hair behind her ear before she let her eyes drop to the floor. "Yeah, yeah I talked to popcorn boy." She lifted her head back up to show Monica the smirk that appeared on her lips. She was trying to stay lighthearted about the situation, maybe if she projected positivity onto everyone, they'd start believe in it too. My, my my how the tables had turned, it almost brought laughter to Salem's lips to think about how she was the one trying to push positivity onto Ethan and Monica when just awhile back that's precisely what they were doing for her. It was no secret that this little group of friends had been through quite a few twists and turns the last few years, but in Salem's mind the four could conquer anything at all so long as they had each other.Â
She sucked in air through closed teeth, shifting her weight in the chair and trying to stay as normal as possible given the situation. "I am absolutely still at AMC, it sucks but I get to do basically whatever I want since Ethan quit and started working at The Cheesecake Factory. The boss has this thing about me, I'm like his favorite person. In an entirely skeevy way." She wrinkled her nose slightly to show her disdain for the man. "Sometimes I feel like I'll never get out. But it's money in our pockets, you know?" She smiled before fiddling with the hem of her shirt.Â
"So, uh. Where are you?" Salem tapped the side of her head, "Um, memory wise? 2011, right?" She sat up straighter and crossed her legs, "So what, a few months after Baker walked in on us?" She raised her eyebrows and tapped on her thighs rhythmically. She tried keeping a smile on her face but she knew this wasn't anything easy to do. Her face grew more serious, "I know you're probably finding it hard to trust Ethan, you hardly know him as you are right now. So.. Maybe I can help."Â
Let Me Talk To Her || Salem & Monica
Salem weaved in and out of nurses and patients filling the halls as she made her way towards Monica's room. Her mind was running wild as she came to the door. Ethan had basically filled her in on the head injury, the loss of memory and how Monica currently thought it was Summer 2011. Which meant, of course, that Monica's current memory of Salem was the memory that the two had spent the last few years repressing. She hesitated as she stood outside her room, leaning against the door frame and preparing herself to go inside.Â
Two things were keeping Salem in the hallway. One, the thought of seeing Monica all hooked up to hospital machines made her heart drop and caused a sinking feeling in her stomach. She had never really liked the feeling that hospitals gave her and she had found herself in one way too many times in the last year or so of her life. The second thing that halted Salem was the fear of Monica rejecting her, refusing to talk to her. A lot had happened between the two in 2011 and it took the last two and a half years to get themselves sorted. Things were finally looking up for the two. Salem had a girl best friend. Salem had a sister. She wasn't prepared to face the possibility of that being over with.
A deep breath filled her lungs as she pressed her hand against the cracked door, pushing it open so she could enter. Her eye fell on Monica, who was awake and sitting up slightly, immediately. She moved further into the room, pushing her hair behind her ear. "Ah, um" She cleared her throat, moving her body onto an empty chair in the corner of the room, "Hey, Monica."Â
