I can actually answer this! So the latex/rubber they used, while standard for Hollywood at the time, reacted REALLY BADLY to being doused in pouring water nonstop for an entire day of shooting. They ended up corroding, which caused them to stink really badly and glob together at the seams. The original plan was to hand out masks to various crew members on the final day of shooting as souvenirs, but the sopping wet, melting, rotting rubber got so gross that by the end of that shooting day they’d already thrown most of them out. Somewhere in a landfill are hundreds of disgusting, bloated, slimey Hugo weaving heads fused together into a nightmarish rotting amalgam :)

Grace insisted on putting Carl's name on the most important paper of the century 🎉

#okay but seriously it makes me so emotional that Grace included Carl so much #named the theory after him and everything (which fits bc he’s the one that actually thought of it)#and it makes sense of Grace’s character. He doesn’t want fame or a huge spotlight or pedestal #quite the opposite actually #kinda sweet and sad how part of the reason why Grace was sent on the mission was bc he was kinda sorta alone #but he’s also constantly shown to not want to be alone #he’s always seeking out other people’s input and thoughts #always trying to make things a team effort #this was even demonstrated in the scenes we got of his classroom #his class was doing an activity as a group. he trusted and allowed his students to use the equipment for his demonstration #students could ask questions freely (and they did! meaning they felt comfortable enough to engage!)#I like to think that a lot of the people working on project hail mary -people like Carl and Stratt- kinda kept things relatively impersonal #they were in a RUSH to figure a solution out and were up against some pretty scary chances in a very scary situation but they didn’t have #the time wasn’t a luxury they could waste #like Carl wasn’t expecting the have fun with Grace. he wasn’t expecting to like find a friend in Grace. but well 🤷‍♀️#Grace being kinda like the foster dog Carl didn’t expect it’d be hard to let go of #like yeah even when the world is ending and you have a super stressful sometimes morally damaging job to do you can still make a best pal #and have fun and bowl and wear silly sunglasses and share skittles with your friends and high five about shit #project hail mary #ryland grace #carl phm #phm #carl project hail mary
