It's my Locaversary! It's been one full year since I started locing my hair. It's been a fun trying this new hairstyle. I treat hair like I do most things on this earth: if I don't like it and it doesn't suit me; I change it. Above is me pictured a day after I started my locs in Arlington, VA. The picture feels like it was from a lifetime ago.

Fashion Attack: Sometimes I go off A couple of weeks ago, we decided to get out of town. It was the first warm day in weeks. I rang it by wearing some of my spring staples. Shoes: purchased at a no name spot on a weekend trip to Lisbon, Portugal Bag: Kate Spade Jacket: Helmut Lang Dress: Sam and Lavi I can't believe I only have less than three months left here in Europe.
Tucked in one of Dusseldorfâs Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen art museum, also known as K21, is the craft cocktail bar, Pardo. To the unhip, it may seem strange to see streams of people making their way into the museum in the middle of the night. However, Pardo, located near the Keisersteich pond, features cocktails of unique complexity in a colorful atmosphere. While the drinks are not very strong, the flavors and attention to detail are present. Make sure you film your bartender (with their permission) making your drink, the preparation of each cocktail is a show within itself!Â
After you purchase a drink, head over to an area of the city called the Worldâs Longest Bar. It is actually refers to Altstadt, a section of the cityâs old town where you have your choice of as many as 300 bars and clubs within a one-half square mile radius.

Fitness to the Test: Reclaiming my Health What have I been up to? So many things. I've traveled to at least ten more countries and a number of new cities, I've celebrated a new year, and I've decided that 2016 will be the year in which I reclaim my body, hobbies and personal development. One of which is being able to re-establish a sustainable fitness and nutrition routine where I still get to eat the things I love, lift heavy weights and move more throughout my day. I am working with a coach even though we are 5000+ miles apart. With his guidance and support, I've made some real progress. Now rounding out the beginning of my 8th week, I've lost a little more than 10 pounds. I've also reclaimed more than half of my wardrobe, self-confidence, and self-love. I'll update you on some of my travels and my body recomposition in later posts. I just got back from London yesterday!
What I Wore: Dancing in the Streets of Rotterdam, Netherlands
My partner and I took a random trip to explore Rotterdam. It is a cute city about 2 hours driving or 1.5 hours on the train from Brussels, where we currently live. It is a simple city with varying and interesting architecture. The city has a diverse population, people from all corners of the earth. We really enjoyed just wandering aimlessly. My favorite building was the train station that we arrived at, Rotterdam Central. The train station is modern, clean, and filled to the brim with food options.Â

I have to update you on my other travels! Amsterdam, Antwerp, Accra, Dusseldorf, Luxembourg City, Barcelona, Athens... so much travel in the last six months.

Hands down best pizza in Brussels. I am just going to say it now and I donât care if you do not agree. My partner and I try to go on dates at least once a week. One place that we often times frequent is this gem. So good, so fresh, and reservations are always needed. They are cash only and display there menu on a large chalk board outside and one that is displayed inside. There isnât much space in the restaurant but the food is consistent and simple. If you are ever craving a monster calzone, you must try it from here. Prices range from 10-18 euro per item.Â
My past New Yearâs Eve resolutions have always been financial in nature (saving money, spending less money, becoming better at budgeting, eating out less, buy less clothing) or related to weight loss (losing fat, eating better, eating less sweets, gaining more muscle) but this year, I want to make it about dedicating more time to self-care. Tiny Buddah, defines self care as âto regularly include in your life a little bit of love and attention for your own body, mind, and soul.â 2015 is the year I neglected all aspects of self care in order to push my self professionally and reach some long overdue goals. Well, I have reached my landmark professional goals, but in the process, I no longer read novels for pleasure, I wasnât going to the gym regularly, I neglected feeding my body healthy foods, I sat in front of the television and on social media for more hours than I would like to admit, I never got a full nightâs rest, and my energy levels were all off.
Since moving to Europe, my partner and I have moved into an apartment building that is located next to some beautiful parks, bike trails, cultural events, dance classes, a weightlifting gym, a great outdoor produce market, and bookstores. Our apartment even has two self care tools that we have committed to using daily, a sauna and swimming pool. Starting last month, after work, we head to the pool to do a few laps and then into the sauna. It is relaxing, rejuvenating, a time for togetherness, reflection, bonding, laughs, fun, discussion, and happiness. The time we have swimming and sweating is the highlight of my day.Â

For Your Thoughts: Today, I love you. Lately, I've been thinking about what stresses me, what motivates me, what makes me feel good, what makes me feel bad, and why I choose to do certain things. Today, I love you. I love today and the opportunities it gives me to make better decisions, be a nicer person, and improve the world around me. Although, today, I also DON'T love you. This morning, one person made me doubt my capabilities, my worth, and capacity to do my work because no one had explained to me that what I was doing wasn't "correct". Those are the days I loathe. I don't expect anyone to lay at my feet and praise me but I do expect to be treated like an equal. I don't like others to set my mood for the day but once in awhile words hurt. I can't be a strong confident woman everyday. Honestly, it is tiring. Today, I'll hide in my shell for the meantime and hope that the latter half of the day is better.
Healthy Glow Eats: In Brussels Happiness Only Costs 3,65 euro.
Our local grocery store offers so many interesting and relatively foreign treats. They sell amazing fresh items, long rows of dry and sweet wines, rich beers, and best of all, great pastries.
One day, while browsing the bakery section, I noticed an oversized macaroon. I decided it would be a good treat. If it was bad, I wouldnât buy it again. If it was good, happiness would only be a few steps from home.

Healthy Glow Eats: Antwerp, Belgium's Chateau Blanc Chocolate Shop The Canadian Traveller blog describes Chateau Blanc as "the one stop chocolate shop. Chateau Blanc sells their own unique high quality blend of pralines made in-house while distributing the works of the best chocolatiers in Belgium like Leonidas, Godiva, Dolfin and Cafe Tasse. Visitors can get an assortment of those chocolate products and their pralines all wrapped up in a travel friendly box, in the form of chocolate diamonds or pick up a pair of unique hand shaped chocolates." After reading that, I knew I had to make it one of my stops while visiting Antwerp for the first time earlier this month. The chocolate shop is quaint and crowded. During my visit, I noticed a strange occurrence. Despite how crowded the shop was, no one left. Every customer waited patiently for their chance order there sweets. As the one shop attendant waited on the twenty or so people in front of me, it gave me more than enough time to see all of the intricately made, beautifully colored chocolates. There were prepackaged chocolates but the real fun lied in picking individual chocolates that were perfectly displayed behind a huge glass case. My favorite purchase were the individually packaged hot chocolate powder mix. The flavor is rich and not too sweet with flavor a ranging from cinnamon to caramel. The mix is perfect was to beat back the cold Belgian weather. Besides shopping, experiencing culture, boutique hopping, and enjoying the arts, this chocolate shop also needs to be on your list. Healthy Glows Travels: The Magical St. Catherine (SC) Neighborhood of Brussels, Belgium
One of the first weekends that my partner and I had with no commitments, moving, travel, or unpacking we ventured down the 1 Brussels Metro line to the SC Neighborhood in Brussels. SC is a quaint, beautifully diverse, lively, area. It is easy to arrive by train. All you do is arrive at the SC stop, walk up any set of stairs, any of the stairs will lead you right into the main plaza. Our first stop was De Noordzee / La Mer du Nord, located at Rue Sainte-Catherine 45, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgium. It is a deceiving chic little seafood spot. When it is sunny, it is bursting with tourist and locals alike trying to get their fill of shrimp, oysters, champagne, wine and beer. When it is rainy, it is bursting with seafood lovers. You really cannot let the weather stop you from doing anything in Brussels.
As the Brussels Kitchen blog describes it is, âon one side, a fish stall, and on the other, a huge counter where, as soon as the sun comes out, all the echte brusseleir meet to have a glass of wine and eat some seafood specialties.We lean against the counter, or eat standing up, at one of the high tables of the square, or even on a bench, if the rest is full...â I think they have De Noordzee description down pact.Â
The menu is diverse and  features fairly reasonable prices with plates running anywhere between 5 and 11 euro. You can fill up with oysters, a grilled variety of everything, filling fish soups and delightful fish burgers.Â
After you are done eating, I suggest walking around SC. It really is special and a great place to visit any day of the week, no matter the weather, alone or with a group, sunny or rainy.Â

Other SC Activities
I would also suggest eating at Hong Kong Delight. It is the perfect low key spot for Chinese dishes. Go get a fresh fancy pastry at Charli Bakery. Get a beer at Bar des Ami.  Get a taste of latin america with a cocktail at Dona Flor Cocktails mobile bar that is usually parked right in front of De Noordzee / La Mer du Nord.  Go visit the SC Organic market open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 7:00am to 5:00pm for your fix of food and flowers in one of oldest markets in Brussels.
Recipes: Strawberry Lime Ice Cubes đ One of my favorite aspects of living in Europe specifically in Brussels, Belgium is the accessibility and affordability of fresh produce, meats, and cheeses. My partner and I have tried a number of open air markets that happen in the city but our favorite is Marche du Midi. This market happens every Sunday from 8am to 2pm. The market happens week, rain or shine right outside the Midi/Zuid station. At the market there are a variety of items sold-from shoes to cheese and chicken to persimmons. It truly is amazing and affordable. For an American understanding, imagine if Costco dumped all of its goods outside in its parking lots. One of my favorite items to purchase is fruit, specifically strawberries. One can purchase three over flowing cartons for only two euro. The strawberries are some of the juiciest, bright red berries that you have ever seen. They are diverse too. The berries range from the size of an American dime coin to the size of a two Anerican quarter coins. I used to just think it was great to eat the berries plain in all of its natural goodness, but we've now expanded our berry recipe repertoire. We've made strawberry lemonade, strawberry limemade, fruit salads, strawberry muffins... But my favorite creation is our strawberry lime ice cubes. You can add them to any drink but my favorite is adding the cubes to CHAMPAGNE! Recipe Ingredients: -1 container of strawberries (or 2 cups of frozen strawberries, slightly defrosted) -1/2 cup of sugar -The juice 2 limes or lemons (1/4 cup of commercially available lime or lemon works too) Directions: Wash and hull the berries to remove the stems. Juice the lemons or limes. Add the berries, citrus juice, and sugar to a blender. Blend the berry, citrus, sugar mixture until smooth. Pour the mixture into a ice cube tray and freeze until solid, preferably overnight. Add the ice cubes to lemonade, any citrus bubbly beverage (such as Sprite), or champagne. Enjoy, you fancy devil, you.
Outfit Posts: Red with Passion My partner has a way of taking photos of me that always me feel more beautiful than I feel. One day while making our way to a day party (that eventually turned into a early morning ending at 3am party in a museum in the middle of Brussels), he took my picture. I thought I was just being silly, but he captured how I felt that day... carefree and just happy to spend a warm sunny Saturday afternoon hand and hand with my partner. I rarely can turn my mind off, stop planning, or worrying. But this Saturday, I didn't have one worry in my head. I'm looking forward to more weekends like that with him, exploring Europe. Restaurant Review: Dinner with Duck x Dino in Shaw
Before leaving DC, I resigned myself to do one thing that I had not done in awhile, treat myself to a lavish meal. Being apart of the DC Foodies network, the first event that caught my eye, was Dino in Shawâs food themed dinners. Just coming off my two week language immersion trip to Toulouse, France all I wanted was duck. I had eaten so much duck during those two weeks in France that it was all I could think about. Every meal in Toulouse is about tucking into large portions of foie gras and grilled duck breasts, hearts and thighs.Â
I posted a status on Facebook and a colleague that I had been looking to get to know (we had too many mutual friends in common for us to not be friends too) said she was interested in attending. We picked the 7:30pm dinner time and met at Dinoâs. We were not disappointed. We ordered a beautiful French Bordeaux wine (my hommage to a lovely then recent trip to Franceâs famed wine country) and we proceeded to eat our way through the 10 course dinner. The dinner was $65 USD. The wine was about $25USD.
Each course offered just a taste of the deliciousness of a richly delicious well-fed duck. Each course had the perfect amount of fat, salt, and crunch. Â
Duck Charcuterie Crostini
confit of pate stuffed duck neck, fegatini, duck neck rillettes
{this was a wonderful early course of house charcuterie}
Duck & Asparagus Salad
sherry wine vinaigrette
{assuming asparagus are available, this is a substitution from the last dinner}
Stewed Duck Feet
{inspired by the dim sum cart)
Wild Mushrooms & Duck
in cocchi rosa sauce
{a morsel of duck breast, a melange of mushrooms & a sauce featuring a wonderful aperitivo}
Matzoh Ball & Duck Soup
farro, duck stock, pea shoots
{duck fat matzo balls are our signature dish for Jewish holidays & duck diners}
Deconstructed Duck Ravioli
in thai flavored duck cream
{the sauce is coconut cream & thai spices, the pasta sheet is folded over local veggies & crispy duck meat}
Confit
on Salad w/Fried Quail Egg
{a small bit of thigh cooked confit style, olive oil fried egg and local salad greens}
Roasted Breast Slices
on local barley pilaf{spiced breast, lightly roasted, served on local barley pilaf}
Duck Crackling Crema di Ciocolato
{a dense pot au chocolat with duck cracklings}
What was my favorite course?
The duck ravioli was amazing. The ravioli melted in my mouth. It made me wonder? âWhy donât more people put pasta and duck together?â
What was my least favorite course?
The Duck Crackling Crema di Ciocolato just tasted like the chef wanted put some duck skin cracklings on top of a chocolate creme. It was a great finisher but was not as creative as the other nine courses.Â
If you are ever in the DC area and want to attend one of the Dino in Shawâs food events visit their website.Â
Good afternoon, good morning, or good evening (depending on what part of the globe you are in). After a short hiatus, an international move, learning a new language, tackling a new position at work, getting adjusted to a new city, packing out of not one but two apartments, clearing a major professional hurdle, I am finally back to blogging. In the last two months, I have had so many life changes, I could not and DID not want to put them into words.Â
My partner and I, packed up our only worldly possessions and our pups and got a jet plane to Brussels, Belgium. We have been planning, plotting, learning a new language, and finally we have made this new country and city our home. Of course, this move did not come without difficulties. But isnât the old adage go something like, âThe biggest problems always seem insignificant when they pass?â Everyday that we inched toward the move it seemed like something else went wrong. All of those problems seem funny now. I am hoping that when it is time to leave this place in the summer of 2017, we will have learned from our mistakes and hang ups for when it is time to move again.Â
Back to our new digs. We are living in a beautiful apartment not far from the city center. Our neighborhood is quiet and clean. We live in a sea of green. There are so many parks and cute little shops that I am sure it will take us the full two years to discover them all. We have established a little routine. We have a vet for the dogs. We have a bank account, our regular outdoor fresh market, we know the neighborhood dogs, and we use Google Maps less and less as the weeks pass. I have identified some of my favorite local boutiques and where I can find the best french macaroons. We have a gym (it is in the same building as my office). I feel like I know the city a bit more.Â
While, Belgium is not Mexico or Ghana or Singapore or even the District of Columbia, it is home for now. We have even had the chance to travel in the two months we have been here. We have visited Luxembourg City, Utrecht, Netherlands... We are plotting trips to Germany and Portugal to see some friends. We have already hosted two visitors. We have so much to see and do in the next 18 months. I will keep you abreast of the things Iâve been up to and the things I plan to do. Thanks for sticking with me.Â
Love and light,
Healthy Glow Blog
P.S. Outfit details to come! My partner took the picture while we explored Brussels. I thought it proper to wear one of Belgium's most well-known designers, Diane Von Furstenberg...

TEMPORARY Blog Retirement. I have decided to take a break from Healthy Glows for the time being. It's been fun but I haven't felt inspired for awhile. I'm hoping that in the next couple weeks I will blog with frequency, especially as I prepare to move overseas. I have three years of blog posts, some very good, some very bad, some that make me question if I was just copying and pasting (with sources), or if I was just blogging to boost readership. I'll get back to you, I promise. But, cheers to introspection, having an outlet, and doing what makes me and you happy.
