โI donโt know how you manage,โ Alex confessed at the idea of not having a car in Grimmbrook. Sure, as a kid when life wasnโt overflowing with things to do, walking everywhere wasnโt the worst thing to happen. He got to spend more time with Raya by his side that way. But once he had a car on his sixteenth birthday Alex had realized the boundaries of Grimmbrook werenโt as close as he thought they were and that those minutes rushing to buses, or jogging to keep up, could be spent on detours to morning breakfast and later goodbyes to the girl from another school.
โI didnโt have a car in the city,โ he confessed as he thought back to just a few years ago. โIt became more trouble than it was worth. Finding parking, traffic jamsโฆ it was easier to walk or catch the subway, or even get an Uber instead. You wouldnโt believe the amount they charge to own a parking space in the city.โ It wasnโt that Alex couldnโt afford it, he could, but that money could be put to better uses and it was unlike him to waste his money on unnecessary purchases unless he really wanted it. โBut I like driving in Grimmbrook; more open roads to just forget time for a while and drive.โ
Alex exhaled a laugh as he was called out by his old friend. Young Alex certainly didnโt want to waste any minute scoffing down cereal that he could spend with Raya, but heโd never been brave enough to tell her that was why heโd skipped the meal so often. It changed when they were older and he could buy them breakfast on the way to school, but for so long heโd gone hungry until morning break just to spend a little more time with her. Even though it was history between them Alex wasnโt quite prepared to share that story today either.
โIsnโt it comforting to know Iโll never change?โ he joked, glancing at her then back to the road. โWouldnโt dare.โ It felt like they were reliving times once past, especially as he pulled onto a familiar path towards their old spot. โSo, tell me, whatโs been happening in the world of Raya Cohen this week?โ
" it's easier than you think, " she tells him. raya must admit, it's short of the comfort that a car offers โ especially this one they're sitting in. when raya first sold her car after her mother passed, she missed it. right now, however, she misses more her mother sat beside her than anything else. besides, she definitely doesn't miss the portion of the bills she could eradicate with the money earned in the sale. raya likes this much more than driving on her own, too, she thinks. eyes curiously scan over the panel much like she did when alex was sixteen and proud of his fresh driver's license.
her attention is pulled from the set of buttons and screen towards alexander again. " really? " she is surprised to hear and yet, it makes sense. as he explains, her head bobs in a nod. raya cringes on her seat to the mere thought of the price he mentions. definitely far more than sensible. " i would believe if you told me but it would probably warrant me a heart attack." she says with an overexaggerated shake of her body to show him goosebumps. " mhmmm, suck it new york!ย " she replies to his last comment with a smile. " grimmbrook ain't so bad, huh? you got open roads and me. "
it comes easily. the smiles and the banter. she who so oftens feels adrift finds comfort in alexander's ever changing but ever familiar presence. so when he asks, it ressonates with raya, despite the roll of the eye that she offers alex. " not if it means you keep making unhealthy choices. should i start packing granola bars again? " she raises his eyebrows at him.
her eyes go soft as she recognizes the path alexander drives towards. a smile dances on her lips, interrupted by a bite when alexander asks about her week. " you know, " i got a last notice on some bills and i have no idea how i'll pay. parents are criticizing my tutoring job. " nothing much. i've been thinking of selling the house, though. i was hoping you'd give me some tips on that. "
