doomed by the narrative but not to death. doomed to survive. doomed to stay alive inside the story. doomed to never escape the narrative, not even through death. you are allowed no exit. there is no way out for you and there never was. you couldn’t die if you wanted to. the narrative has a hold on you and it won’t let go. death is too sweet a doom for you. the story has something much worse in mind. there is no way out.

by the way the reason for something like wheel of time having once been considered unfilmable is not bc of the special effects or the budget requirements of making it feel appropriately epic (though these are also factors). its because the plot of the books is just in and of itself impossible to condense into a structure appropriate for a visual medium without dramatic changes. someone needs to have a serious innovative vision for the whole thing. adapting the books straightforwardly with as few changes as possible would never have been viable in any way, neither financially as a commercial product, nor narratively as a work of story. any attempt at that would have sucked shit and it would have been made for a genuinely miniscule audience consisting almost exclusively of the book fans who would watch any adaptation no matter how unwatchable as long as it felt made with them in mind. like in choosing to cater completely to book fans the show would have been just as completely inaccessible to any viewer who didn't already love the books. idk it bothers me that ppl can't understand the logic of this. nitpicking every change and feeling entitled to being centered as the primary audience is the nostalgia critic's way

having Lan's name translate to "beloved" in the Old Tongue is very sweet but it does have the same energy as naming your huge Rottweiler guard dog "Princess"

i do understand the strategy but it's incredibly funny to me that Rand picks up the two most powerful female channelers of the age, gains access to sa'angreal with "continent melting" capabilities, and then immediately fucks off to the one city where no one can channel.

i do love rand al'thor. i do not however think that rand al'thor loves rand al'thor. he might even dislike rand al'thor.

Something happened at Dumai's Wells. I mean, obviously a lot of things happened at Dumai's Wells. But something happened that I think actually messed with the nature of reality a bit, or, idk, switched the track to what had previously been a low-probability future. After Dumai's Wells, we stop seeing new Weird Shit in the setting. The aggressive foreshadowing that Perrin is going to be a Warder is just...dropped. Taim stops being Demandred. (Which is fine. A man can be simultaneously one of the Foresaken and not until he's observed and the waveform collapses. That's physics.) Presumably this is when it stops being the case that either Perrin or Lan will die in the Last Battle and be resurrected by Nynaeve, and starts being the case that it's actually impossible to Heal death. And I cannot pin down just what exactly it was that happened. Nothing in the Karaethon cycle is illuminating here. No one used Balefire. There wasn't a bubble of evil. "The first nine Aes Sedai swore fealty to the Dragon Reborn, and the world was changed forever" is certainly a true statement, but not much of an explanation.
