All I ever really want to know is how other people are making it through life—where do they put their body, hour by hour, and how do they cope inside of it.
Miranda July, It Chooses You (via creatingaquietmind)
Good Bones, Maggie Smith
Life is short, though I keep this from my children. Life is short, and I’ve shortened mine in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways, a thousand deliciously ill-advised ways I’ll keep from my children. The world is at least fifty percent terrible, and that’s a conservative estimate, though I keep this from my children. For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird. For every loved child, a child broken, bagged, sunk in a lake. Life is short and the world is at least half terrible, and for every kind stranger, there is one who would break you, though I keep this from my children. I am trying to sell them the world. Any decent realtor, walking you through a real shithole, chirps on about good bones: This place could be beautiful, right? You could make this place beautiful.
it’s so humid in this harbor city that it feels like the air is weeping, but its tears are weighing down my very skin.
that summer, the country was humid with injustice, pain, racism, oppression.
Everyone who terrifies you is sixty-five percent water. And everyone you love is made of stardust, and I know sometimes you cannot even breathe deeply, and the night sky is no home, and you have cried yourself to sleep enough times that you are down to your last two percent, but nothing is infinite, not even loss. You are made of the sea and the stars, and one day you are going to find yourself again.

just had half a second where i felt like this plane was going to land in phoenix, when i know i’m bound for boston. maybe by instinct from all those many flights landing in Sky Harbor, i could suddently feel the grid of the desert begin to sprawl beneath me, widening and welcoming me in.
catch your breath and carry on.
things I have decided
- going to start wearing bold lipstick again, and it is going to be my power move.
-my new bedroom will have lots of windows, and i am determined to have floaty pretty long curtains like my mum would have.
- i am going to do my best to keep that space nice and inviting to others, something i have maybe never accomplished in my life.
-getting to spend this much time with my sister, and making this sudden transition to every day friends with her, is worth all the other social shit that has happened in this city.
- keeping a long-term view is so hard, but so helpful.
- the best advice we can maybe give one another is to not give up yet. and maybe sometimes we need to tell ourselves that, too.
I could show you who you are And I could kiss you in the dark I could take it way too far But I could never win your heart
Oh yeaaaaahhhhhhh
You rattle my bones Take my heart like a ten-pound stone Sometimes wish I’d left you alone
There will come a time when you want to cut off all your hair. Do it. Realise that the thing you want rid of doesn’t lie in the long curls that frame your face so perfectly. Live with short hair for a while. It’ll grow. You won’t always want to talk to people. That’s okay. When it’s late and you hear your friends talking in the next room, you don’t have to join them. You’re allowed your solitude. It makes company sweeter and it teaches you how to survive alone. You will need that skill. In the winter, you’ll believe that nothing will ever grow again. You’re wrong. Every year, London looks like it’s on its last legs, wheezing through those last cold days in March. Every year, spring comes like an explosion and the city shakes off its sleep. Mundane problems will get the better of you sometimes. Don’t worry. Try as you might, life cannot be an endless, beautiful, intense moment. Find comfort in money worries and late trains; they’re a welcome rest in between heartbreaks and breakdowns. People will call you a cynic, a wry smile on their faces. Pay them no mind. You alone know that you are capable of a love greater than anything they can comprehend. You alone know that you are not willing to sell your identity and respect to the first smirking halfwit to pass by. It is not cynicism. It is reverence for your own vast and fathomless heart, and it makes sense only to love someone who understands that and is awed by it. You will not always get what you want when you want it. Accept it. Your goals are not set in stone and you are not on a fixed trajectory. Sometimes, life will take its time and you will have to play the long, interminable game. Play it well and with as much grace as you can muster. Live at your own pace. At night, you will occasionally wake up afraid, wanting to die. Don’t give in. Night plays its tricks, but you are not so easily fooled. Your mind will play its tricks, too. It will make you believe that you’re not who you are, but you must not give in. You take a breath and you tell yourself that you are here. That you always were.

Call me and tell me it’s just because you needed to hear my voice before you went to sleep.

sometimes i wonder why i am kind to people who don’t deserve it? until i remember what it means to be human, what it feels like to be human. i cannot – and will not – hurt people just because i can.
i may not be better than you but i am better than that. (via kvtes)
THE DESERT IS BEAUTIFUL TOO
By Jake DeBruyckere
There is a stereotype I hear too often when I tell people I’m a photographer from Phoenix. “What do you take pictures of, everything is so brown?” Well, yes, there is a lot of brown but there is indescribable beauty hidden in the desert, and it’s not that hard to come across. Venture into the desert during golden hour and stay after the sun sets, just don’t forget your water! The light is less harsh and casts a warm glow over all the cacti and the land. The shadows start to get long, the air gets cooler, and everything but the wildlife is quiet. The birds are chirping and bugs whiz by and yet there is a stillness that can be felt throughout. It’s noisy and quiet at the same time. When the sun finally starts to slip below the horizon is when things get interesting. The sky burns red, orange, and pink and floods the desert below and suddenly you are wondering where all these colors came from. The greens in the cacti are vibrant, the mountains glow pink, and, during spring, the desert floor is littered with yellow and white wild flowers. (And people say the desert is just brown…) Just as fast as the sky was on fire and the mountains glowed pink, the colors fade and the last light dims. _____

Rule 1: Stop giving yourself to others in gallons and leaving yourself aching, thirsty. Love yourself more. You are worth drowning for.
