two christmas mornings.
TASK 09 / IRENE BRADFORD.
you’ve known enough heartbreak to last a lifetime, and you figure that this is your destiny. the work you do makes everything worth it.

“gallagher does have high standards…” supposedly. she trails off, because, for one thing, people were murdered on campus this year, by someone president sutton invited into her school, which does not look great! and though tilly is a good student, she’s not sure that’ll translate into being a good spy. “but the same is true in reverse. right? if i do poorly, they’ll remember, and it’ll count against me.” tilly has never failed at anything before and she’s just afraid this will be the first time she truly doesn’t know how to succeed. “i hope so…but i always assumed that specializations are nice, but really you should be good at everything. honestly, i’d rather shoot something than be asked to seduce someone.” tilly has done very little weapons training and even less flirtation and seduction. “that’s why i was wondering…i think it would probably be better coming from me. but maybe if he hears it from you directly he’ll believe it more. okay, um…thank you.”
– “THAT’S TRUE, SO...PERHAPS JUST DON’T DO POORLY,” IRENE SAYS, which is probably horrible advice, but it’s the kind that she tends to give herself ( and the kind that her own mother used to give to her. ) “ it’s true, not all spy training includes specializations like these, gallagher just gives you the chance to work hard at a specific skill. but you should be able to do it all, that’s what gen eds are for... ” irene snorts at tilly’s statement, because it’s funny how you can feel like you know a person that you’ve just met, “ well, hopefully it doesn’t come down to that. i don’t think you’d be surprised to know how useful seduction can be – it’s more about charisma than anything. ” she nods, “ no, i’ll...i think i should do it. it just seems more fair to him that way, but of course, if he changes his mind, that’s fine too. and, um. not that you need this, but...i want you to know that i am really proud. not that i had any hand in raising you, but knowing all you’ve accomplished and the sort of person you are...i'm happy to know you now, in any capacity. ”

“it is still a spy organization. i don’t think they outlined everything they plan to make us do in great detail. and it’s more about their reputation than the substance of their internship program, isn’t it? plus i assume she’s sending us to a country that doesn’t speak primarily english to test our language skills.” tilly does know german, she knows a few languages, and she has been assimilating, in a way, most of her life, but she hates the idea of actively being…well, a spy. “honestly…i want to be looking forward to it, but i can’t help feeling like i’ll be awful at whatever they expect us to do.” at least maddox has a more useful skillset to actually being in the field like that. “i hope they let me stay inside and do covert ops, like i’ve been training for. but i’d love to give medical aid, too, i just don’t like the idea of people getting hurt this summer.” tilly wonders if irene means texting…or long-winded emails and phone calls, maybe even video chat. it sounds extremely awkward and if tilly had her choice, she’d go for emailing. “okay. i don’t mind. have you already…do you want me to ask maddox about it?”
– “I THINK ALL OF THINGS POINT TO A VALUABLE EXPERIENCE THAT WILL KEEP YOU BUSY,” IRENE SAYS, almost jealous of the opportunity. she’s sure the work they do will be fairly low-stakes but a great test, and that’s important. “ and i think if you make an impression on your supervisors there, it can only mean good things for your future. ” any student that can speak german will have an advantage, of course, so luckily tilly is among them. or perhaps not even luckily, she’s inclined to believe that tilly is simply more clever than her classmates, perhaps with some bias ! “ i don’t think so. i don’t think they’re going to expect you to be a sharpshooter or seductress, they’ll expect you to be good at what you specialize in. which, you are. ” she nods, “ no, that’s okay, i should probably talk to him. or, try to, at least, ” she grimaces. “ i’ll give you my email. ”
tillylongfellow
“president sutton isn’t exactly running the internship,” she points out and she’s not sure why, maybe because her birth mother missed out on the teenage arguing-with-your-mom-just-for-the-sake-of-it phase. “and i grew up in switzerland, so berlin isn’t…exciting. though i’m happy to visit. and it’ll be nice to have more hands on experience.” tilly doesn’t have any idea what the internship will entail, hoping only to avoid proving herself completely inadequate. since she’s (not entirely on purpose) evaded her mother since they first spoke, she actually hasn’t been sure what it is the woman wants from her. somehow, the suggestion of actually having a relationship comes as a complete surprise. “i don’t not…i’m not against that.” it’s just too weird, feeling like she has to play it cool with her own mother, who she does have childhood memories of.
– “NO, BUT SHE SET IT UP, I THINK SHE’D DO HER RESEARCH BEFORE SENDING YOU to a foreign country, ” irene says, and there’s a note of condescension in her voice that makes her think that perhaps she is cut out to be a mother – she sounds a bit like her own. “ right, but the prospect of working a real agency hopefully is ? you are looking forward to it ? ” she asks, because she’s worried that tilly is here and doesn’t want to be, and if that’s the case, irene wants to discourage her. irene tries not to look overly-excited at the prospect, mainly because she doesn’t want to put any pressure on tilly. “ okay, yeah. i was just thinking it might be nice if we could...keep in touch. i just...i want to know more about you. i want to know you, i guess. if you don’t mind. ”

“Instigator or not, she was the perpetrator,” Roman replies, trying not to give away how hurt he is. He doesn’t want to hear Irene’s words, not when they’re igniting the same glimmer of hope he has that something isn’t quite right. After Elise had betrayed them all, it’s too risky to hope for a different answer, only to search for it, and be reminded once again that they were all wrong about her. “I can’t imagine you’re one to divulge your whereabouts, but if you ever happen to be in the same neck of the woods, don’t hesitate to call,” Roman tells her. A funny sentiment considering, no, she’s not one to broadcast where she is, and Roman moves too many times a year. This is most likely goodbye.
– “I KNOW, I KNOW IT DOESN’T CHANGE...ANYTHING,” SHE SIGHS, because she hates that she allows herself to hope, even after all she’s been through, she should know BETTER. “ i’m just not optimistic that it’s over. ” which is probably a suspicious thing to say, but anyone who knows elise should know that there’s probably more to the story. she’s just that sort of woman. “ sure, roman, ” she placates with a soft smile, because she knows she won’t and she’s pretty sure that he knows that too. “ good luck with everything. ”

“ faking your death was good to you, huh? ” he continues, not wanting to weigh down his tone with the past. a lot of stupid decisions have lead them to this point. whilst jack is aware he would never earn irene’s forgiveness, this conversation feels like it’s as close as he’ll ever get, and regretfully it’s taken the brotherhood and a few untimely deaths to get there. it was never meant to be this complicated. “ should try it out sometime. ” though he can’t imagine his life would change all that much from what it is now. “ you kidding? i’ll take it off silent. ” safe to say he knows that phone call will never come, at least not for the reasons he’d like, but he can’t stand there and pretend like he’s not going to wait.
not productive might be the most irene answer, and it shows once again how much she’s committed to her duties. they’ve both lost so much from being committed, but she has a chance to get at least a glimpse of that back. something he’s not so fortunate of. “ everyone needs a break, ” he replies, which doesn’t really answer her question. “ there’s a reason why we discourage the kids about going into the field. ” because this profession doesn’t allow breaks, which simply isn’t healthy. “ but you’ve got another chance here– ” he thinks to miles, maddox and tilly. “ shame to waste it. ”
– “IN SOME WAYS,” SHE SMILES SLIGHTLY, although she would probably say quite the opposite. coming back to being irene has been jarring, but she thinks after it all, she likes being alive more than she likes being dead, despite the ghosts of her past that have resurfaced. “ you’re never going to let that go, are you, jack ? ” she teases, tilting her head up slightly to meet his gaze. she lets herself look at him for a moment because she assumes that it might be one of the last times anyway, and even with a remarkable amount of self-control, it seems worth it to indulge, to think that this is how she’ll remember him: tired, incorrigible, and...well, still the same. there’s maybe another life, another version of herself that would call, after a couple glasses of wine when she’s weak and missing him, but she’s not that sort of woman. they both know she won’t call and that this is it.
“ yeah, ” she sighs, “ wish i had the chance to discourage mine. ” because she really does, there’s something so unsettling about seeing her daughter hold a gun, and irene SHOULD be desensitized to most things by now. “ i just...i don’t really know if they want me to have that chance, ” she admits, “ but i’ll be around for a bit, at least. i’m staying with laura, and...i’m going to let them know the door’s open. that’s all i can really do at this point. ”
tillylongfellow
she never knows what to do at these things, because they have the air and appearance of one of the parties she grew up attending, but the etiquette is not the same. and in those situations, she was always forced to have an escort. it’s nice to attend alone, though she’s not sure who to talk to since her roommates have other friends and maddox seems preoccupied, too. it’s almost as if this line of thought draws her mother to her, which…she might never know how that makes her feel. “fun? um…yeah. it’s nice to see everyone altogether one last time. i don’t know how often we’ll all be in the same place in berlin.” and though it feels like everyone is doing the internship, she knows that’s not the case. “i do believe that. but i grew up going to galas.”
– “TRUE, THOUGH YOU’LL ALL BE REALLY BUSY IN BERLIN, i imagine. i’ve talked to laura about it, and it’s definitely not a vacation, ” irene warns, although tilly is probably not the child that she should be saying this too. she can take a look at tilly’s record and scores and know that her daughter takes things like that seriously. “ right, of course, ” irene furrows her brow, because she still knows very little about her daughter, how she grew up. of course that could be surmised from her file, but it’s all very black and white. “ you know, um...if you wanted to keep in touch, we could. if you want that, ” irene proposes, thinking about what jack said the other day – this is your second chance. don’t throw it away.

“Oh goodness I had blocked those from my memory,” Cora replied, a real small laugh escaping her rep lips as she reflected. Back in the ball mingling with the Blackthorne boys for a singular night had created a mix of tension, nerves, and hormones. Well, she thought as she looked out at all the students, maybe that hadn’t changed all that much but at least they were all used to each other by now. And having almost too much fun by the looks of it. “I find myself not in the party mood either,” she agreed, twirling her still-not finished champagne between her fingers.
– “DEFINITELY, ALL TO PRACTICE ASSIMILATION OR WHATEVER, but i really just wanted to dress nice and hang out with my friends. i think i talked to like, maybe two boys,” irene laughs, thinking of the way she and her friends would take to the dance floor on their own or find excuses to brush off the guys. “ yeah, it’s hard after...what happened this week, i’m still feeling unsettled. maybe that’s because elise and i were...old friends, ” she sighs. “ i know you can’t predict these things, but i do feel almost like a failure, for not noticing the signs. i think maybe i just didn’t want to. ”
grayroman
“That’s a good call. I can’t imagine any of us want to have her job right now,” Roman notes, and he really does feel for Laura. Being in this profession is hard enough without being in a place of power, in a place where the decisions you make affect not just your life, but the lives of many. Of kids. He looks the other way, mostly because he doesn’t want Irene to see the disappointed look on his face. “Nothing about it feels neat to me,” he says into the open air of the empty hallway, but stops himself, pulling it all back together. “I’m an open book, Irene,” Roman tells her, plastering on a trademark grin. "I’m headed to New York to do some work at my office. Then it’s Budapest.” Back to habit, back to leaving a place as quickly as he’d arrived.
– “NO, NOT AT ALL,” IRENE REPEATS QUIETLY. “ i just can’t help but think...i mean, there’s no way that elise was the instigator of all of this, she wouldn’t...there’s just something bigger out there. it’s not over. ” and that’s another reason why she feels better sticking around for a bit, she needs more time to think, the chance to pick laura’s brain for anything else they might’ve missed. “ sounds busy, ” she says with a slight smile, a tilt of her head. “ but good. budapest sounds pretty nice right about now. ” because running always sounds nicer than staying.
coraxheartfield
Her last night at Gallagher felt like something more out of a movie than reality and as she watched the party go on around her, Cora wished that she could enjoy it, and the glass of champagne sitting in her hand, more. Though the flames of the dire had long died and the members of the Brotherhood had been arrested, she was still vigilant, still ready to whip out the knife she kept hidden in a moments notice if needed. The threat may have been gone but that didn’t mean that she was going to spend this party acting like a fool. “They should consider themselves lucky,” she mused out loud to no one in particular. “The parties we had in my day were never this extravagant.”
@gallagherstart
– “OH, DEFINITELY, OURS WERE ALWAYS SO FORMAL,” irene laughs. “ the balls where we used to have to mingle with blackthorne students ? i always dreaded those, wasn’t much of a celebration, but...well, they definitely deserve this. ” she presses her lips together for a moment, mainly because her mind is EVERYWHERE but the party, and she envies them, how easy it is for them to celebrate after everything that’s just happened. now she has a dear friend that she considers a traitor, locked up behind bars after bringing a group that attempted to murder her children to campus. “ not feeling to celebratory myself, though. ”

– IRENE’S PRETTY SURE THIS IS GOODBYE, IN A WAY. if she’s being honest, in the past few days she hasn’t thought of what to say to tilly and maddox much at all, mainly because she’s been so preoccupied with what happened to elise. it’s hard not to feel stupid, to run over every conversation and mistake in her mind. but at least tilly is here, safe, and in some ways, that’s all the reassurance irene needs. “ are you having fun ? ” irene asks, taking a break from her chaperoning duties to actually SAY something to her daughter. “ it’s hard to believe, maybe, but our end of the year parties when i attended gallagher were much more formal than this. ”
If I see any sort of injustice, I can fight like a dog. I’m not frightened to be outspoken and I can get very angry. I think expressing anger is not something that’s considered very feminine… or British! If I saw someone slandered in the press… libel is something I really loathe. So, I probably would speak out about that, whether it was about myself or someone else.
