“Yanno, sometimes it’s like you don’t even know me.” Roy jokes, taking Mateo’s statement with a grain of salt. The world they live in there’s really no time to beat around the bush - he’d never be cruel to Dick’s kids of course, but he definitely doesn’t want to give Mateo false hope, not when it could land him in trouble later on. “If I thought you were a failure at archery I wouldn’t keep giving you lessons, you know that right?” He laughs and pats the kid on the shoulder. “Only to me, kiddo. You seem to forget I’ve known you since you were little.” Roy can’t help but laugh at Mateo’s determination to prove him wrong, though it definitely seems familiar. “Well I look forward to seeing that happen.”

humming to acknowledge that he’d heard the other boy, florian contemplated: their family was odd, and although he thought he was fitting in, the musician would never really be sure. nevertheless, he was quite appreciative of mateo’s words, even if he was just being polite. “sorr– uh. okay. yeah.” he said, clearing his throat. “hope i haven’t put anything into your head.”

“Something like that. She came home once and he told her that she smelled like an ash tray.” Lucas of course had just been grumbling from next to him. He also knows that Jenny picked that habit up from SPARKS, and after knowing his friend for so long this habit was going to stay. “I can try, but I think that’s something your father will always feel strongly about.”

“Alfred is smart, so it won’t be easy, but I’m sure we can make him talk if we work together because WE’RE smart too.” Jason says with a grin.

“Yeah, I think it matters on what you’re interested in it for, you know? When you’re learning it in the context of say – what angle to jump off a building from so you don’t break your legs that’s more interesting than learning it for a desk job somewhere” Jason says with a raised eyebrow. “If you’re sure, this ain’t a test or anythin’.”

“I like your idea better. You got yourself a deal.” Lian says with a grin as she nudges him. “Lets go get that coke.”

“They should for not deciding to go along with us today.” She said before giving him a smile. “I’ll hold you it then.” Irey laughed at the mentioned of a group chat. “Is it funny that i wouldn’t put it past my dad on actually having something like that. I mean he knows the bar they all hang out so…but maybe if I ask nicely and give him the puppy eye look, he might share it.”

“Maybe we can get Lian or Jai to take one for us. I’m sure if we’re pretty convincing maybe they’ll say yes to it. But fine whatever you want its on me today.” She said smiling. “Maybe I should ask my dad for their schedules or something so I can know when they’re out.“

“Yeah, basically. One mission goes wrong, and you come back different.” Nat has seen that first hand in the past too.

“I don’t think even Superman can hear me thinking.” Dick says with a chuckle, but he knows what Mateo means. His son can read him almost as well as Dick can read Mateo - it’s just how they are. They know each other too well, and Dick’s always been open and upfront with his children wherever he can. No doubt Mateo would be able to see what he’s thinking - but he can’t help it. He can’t help but take it onto his shoulders, that Mateo is so hard on himself. That was the example he gave the kid, after all, albeit unintentionally.

He laughs and shakes his head. “Nah, I’m not complaining. I’m glad for it - you two are gonna be more than I ever could’ve dreamed of.” He says with a note of warmth and pride in his voice, and he means it. Dick’s by no means trying to belittle his own achievements in life, but he knows his children will surpass him - it’s what he hopes for, one day. “You were able to tell that from one conversation, huh?” he asks with a raised eyebrow, watching his son carefully, trying to read him. But he knows when Mateo has made his mind up - and if he wants Dick to talk to Lucas himself, that’s what he’s going to have to do. “I guess I will, then.”

the teenager raises an eyebrow ⏤ really? “i guess that makes me better than superman, then.” clark would love to hear that one. his eyes remain on his father, waiting to see if his words will actually have any effect, but he doesn’t get his hopes up. dick grayson will always be dick grayson. luckily, that usually meant something good, like the pride that was usually present when he talked about mateo and his sister. mateo’s doubts and insecurities truly appreciated that. “the new and improved generation,” he quips. unless he fucks everything up, of course.

“Hey, I thought you wanted honesty. I’m not here to sugarcoat stuff with you, kiddo.” Roy says with a grin, reaching to ruffle the boy’s hair. He’s not doing that badly, really, especially for someone who doesn’t actually practice archery all that often. “Listen, if you think being bad with a bow and arrow makes you a failure, we need to re-evaluate some things.” Roy raises an eyebrow, tilting his head to the side. “Nah, nagging isn’t my style. If you wanna practice you know where to find me - me nagging you is just going to make you not want to practice.” He grins and shakes his head. “Sure, if you say so. You gonna swear to me you’ll come to practice at least once a week, then?”
