this summer is going to be the summer where we bring back fireflies. where we live out the better parts of novels. where i kiss you, over and over again. this summer iām wasting time and loving it. weāll never be this young again. every day new plants are blooming. iām going to love and breathe and laugh loudly. this is the summer of pink cheeks, of eating popsicles without worrying about calories, of speakeasys, of pop-up carnivals and popup tents, of sunscreen and moscato, of feeding the birds, of showing scars and belly fat and living, so help us god.
ok pete is yelling at addison for kissing sam BUT pete you saidĀ āI love you violetā in your sleep like guys this is unhealthy u cannot yell at her for this and act like u donāt love violet

look at me - i will never pass for a perfect bride
so i know i already made a retold mulan post but i just LOVE MULAN SO MUCH so hereās another
in the original myth mulan isnāt really a clumsy fish out of water. sheās strong and smart and the reason she goes to war is because sheās the most qualified person in her family to fight, regardless of gender.
so how about this: mulanās a fighter. she knows exactly who she is, like in the original myth, sheās knows how to be the blossoming flower and the great stone dragon. sheās still mulan though, so she still doesnāt memorize the silly ways sheās supposed to be a good wife and has little patience for appearing graceful while pouring tea. sheās innovative and courageous and beautiful, but no one is under any illusions about what kind of wife sheāll be.
and the matchmaker is the matchmaker for the li family as well, for this great big part of china. and general li wants his son to be married before he goes off to war, wants his son to have a reason to fight to live, like a wife waiting for him. and the matchmaker reads the stars and the tea leaves and the astrology charts, and no matter what all the signs point to one thing: the honorable li shang is destined to marry the insolent, arrogant fa mulan.
the matchmaker isnāt going to let that happen, she refuses to be responsible for that disaster of a wedding. so she sends her most beautiful girls, the ones that are obedient and quiet and know their roles, the ones that are eager to marry into the li family.
and each of them are entertained and met and sent back. shang is many things, but smooth isnāt one of them, he has nothing to say to these quiet girls who smile at him, feels large and awkward around their polite smiles. so he and his father go to the matchmakerās village, shang reluctantly and his father to demand she stops messing with them and provides a proper bride.
itās on the day that mulan and the other girls are parading in the street. shang sees a girl - mulan - hurry into the end of the line, jumping over a bench and darting around a careening wagon to get there, and stifles a laugh.
then thereās no reason to laugh at all, because a group of huns have decided that this village is in their way, and attack.
everyone scatters, women hide, children hide, and most of the men do too. shang and his father join the fight with some of the other men who hadnāt hid, and these men are starved, clearly not with shan yu, so even though theyāre outnumbered theyāll likely win.
shang sees a hun go to attack the girl heād seen earlier, the girl for whatever reason hadnāt run and hid. the hun raises a sword above his head to strike her down, and shang is so sure heās about to see this pretty girl lose her head.
but she doesnāt. instead she rolls out of the way, and pops up, headbutting him in the stomach. she takes his sword from his now-slack grip and plunges it into his chest. without hesitation or pause the girl joins the fight, swinging the sword expertly and cutting down every man who stands against her. soon theyāre fighting back to back, and shang has never felt more in sync with another person. she cuts off the head of the last hun, and shang has never seen anyone more beautiful than this girl, dress ripped and make up smudged and covered in blood that isnāt hers.
āmulan,ā one of the other girls says, peaking out of a store front, āis it over?ā
the girl, mulan, looks out over the dozen dead men and says, grimly, āitās barely begun.ā she searches the crowd, finding and old man and yelling, āgather the bodies, weāll burn that at dusk outside of the village. everyone else,ā her eyes sweep across the gathered people, and shang is struck by the fact that this girl isnāt well liked. thereās anger and disapproval in many of the faces, but theyāre listening. these people donāt like her. but they do trust her. āletās clean this all up. these were bandits, not soldiers. thereās nothing more to fear.ā
āwhat if there are more?ā the other girl asks, arms wrapped around herself.
mulan raises her stolen sword and says, āthen i will slice them to ribbons. this is our village, and this is our country. any who would try to take it from us - from me - will suffer the consequences.ā
and it shouldnāt be comforting, hearing words of violence from this young girl, yet everyone around them relaxes, and gets moving, gather the bodies and tending the wounded.
āwho are you?ā his father asks, and someone who doesnāt know him might think he was angry, but shang can tell heās impressed.
mulan turns to them and bows, āmy apologies. i am fa mulan, daughter of fa zhou. thank you for helping us.ā she stands, and shang meets her eyes for the first time.
he swallows, and blurts out, āyou - you fight good.ā
his father coughs to hide his laughter, but mulanās eyes crinkle at the corners. āthank you. you do as well.ā
and they just keep standing there smiling at each other until his father claps his hands and is like okay - theyāll have to report this to the emperor, no time to dawdle, have to go now.
so they take their leave, and shang thinks this is the last time heāll see fa mulan.
except thereās still the draft, and this time mulan doesnāt take no for an answer, wonāt hear of it. her father is injured and old and she is young and fit to fight. she will go in his place.
so she arrives at the camp, prepared to pretend and lie - except she goes to meet her commanding officer and itās him, that boy who had fought with her. shangās eyes widen, but theyāre in front of too many people. he can see it on her face, her fear, and she hadnāt shown any fear when she was facing down over a dozen huns, but she does now. so he makes his choice and says nothing, pretends he buys her story.
she tracks him down that night and demands an explanation. he says this war is too important to kill good warriors, whatever gender they are. he swears to keep her secret. mulan is his best soldier from the beginning, and means to treat her like anyone else, but itās impossible. she isnāt like anyone else, is strong and smarter and braver than them. they argue tactics, and sheās the only one who can give him a workout in hand to hand, and he doesnāt have trouble finding his words with her. he finds himself falling in love with her, but doesnāt say anything. sheās not here for love, sheās here for a war. he vows to say something if they survive this, but itās unlikely that will happen.
they head to the front earlier. they get there in time to provide back up for his father and his army, and itās a loss but not a slaughter. his father is too distracted to notice ping is the girl from the village. all he knows is this soldier had led the second wave of attacks, and it was thanks to her any of them were alive at all. they prevent half of the huns from getting through the pass, but thatās still an army heading for the imperial city. the general is injured, so mulan and shang lead the army after him.
they find him at the mountain, and just like before mulan uses the cannon to destroy the army. she knew it would spell their death, but it was worth it, for her people, for her country, for her family. this time itās shang that wonāt accept her death, that tries to drag her unconscious body to safety. only he fails, and mulan becomes buried under the snow.
they return to the city, and shang is besides himself - the woman he loves is dead, she saved them all and sheās gone, and heāll never recover from this. only he canāt tell his father this, their friends. they think he mourns a friend, not the woman he wanted to make his wife.
except mulan survives, and sees the other huns as well. only she kills them there before they can get to the city, and decides this is for the best. fa ping dies honorably in battle, and fa mulan is free to return home to her family.
so general li decides that itās time to go to that matchmaker again, and demand she stop playing games. the matchmaker confesses that she thought the bride was unsuitable, and the general demands she send her anyway.
so mulan has barely had the chance to settle back home when the matchmaker shows up at her door saying sheās sending her to see a potential husband, but not who. so mulan shows up all made up to li household and shang drags himself into the room, already resigned to a loveless marriage, when they see each other. āmulan?ā he demands, and his father is all pleased because itās the fighting girl from the village.
but then his son starts crying and they run to each other. shang picks her up in his arms and she clings to him, and shang is babbling about how he thought she was dead, and mulan is so overjoyed that sheās with shang, and shang wants her, that she kisses him without explaining.
except now shangās father demands an explanation. so they give it to him, the whole story comes tumbling out, and he stares hard at her, and remembers her as ping, the brave soldier that had saved them all. heās not upset - he ecstatic. he goes to the emperor and tells him everything, and the emperor officially offers mulan an officer position in the army. she accepts, as long as shang is by her side. shang seconds this, and they set in motion the plans for the wedding.
fa mulan and li shang get married and lead armies and live happily ever after, just like the stars intended.

Itās come to my attention that I have not yet made a post about Farmerās Market Hotā¢. Ā
Farmerās Market Hot is a specific kind of aesthetic that is the result of me watching Orphanās Black and trying to describe the hotness of Cal to others.
See my point?
Farmerās Market Hot is a wholesome kind of hot. Rugged but approachable. Itās not the kind of hot where you immediately go, āOh my god theyāre so perfect, I want to take them home and photograph them/tear their clothes off.ā Thatās for later.
This is the kind of hot for people who would visit the farmerās market to buy some organic cheeses on their way to pick up their kids from their Creativity Through Music class. Itās the look that says āIām here to support our local beekeepers.ā You see them and it makes you want to settle down. You want to do your taxes with them, raise dogs together.
Itās borderline hipster without the elitism and irony, borderline country without the sound of Tim McGraw. If theyāre white, racist shit like dreads automatically disqualifies them.
Guys will most likely be stubbly, or bearded, but not to the point of lumberjack. Think Chris Evans in between Marvel movies.
Pictured: a man who wants to buy artisan bread from a stall and be polite to the merchants.
Imagine a woman with a sunflower tattoo, wearing a high-low dress and clunky dependable boots, holding a dogās leash while she waits at the knife sharpening booth. Imagine a man wearing flannel and holding a baby while talking about ethical alternatives to quinoa.
Farmerās Market Hotā¢.
Add this to your vocabulary.
Itās that time of the year again, so I felt the need to bring this back.

I just left a plantation tour in Louisiana. I have a lot to sayā¦
SAY IT!
I honestly thought I knew everything about slavery. Not so.
The owner of this particular plantation had it built by slaves for 3 years. Every brick was handmade. Over 120,000 bricks on 2,000+ acres of land (this place was huge.) The clay used for the bricks came from the Mississippi River. The majority of the slaves are buried under the Levees and water. Some are buried with their Masters. Not allowed to live with them but could be dead with them.
Before you enter the house, thereās a list of slaves who lived here including their age and how much they were purchased for. 124 total. Some slaves were worth as little as $25. As young as 5 years old.
On this particular plantation, the owner was big on punishmentā¦he used noise making neck restraints. Imagine three 4lb balls around your neck with bells inside. Children were restrained by ankle locks that connected between their ankles.
This was a sugar cane plantation, one the worst practices to involve slaves because of its danger. A lot of slaves were decapitated, amputees and killed from the fields and machinery. A lot of kids lost their lives creating sugar. Speaking of children, a child stood in the living room and operated the fan with a string while guests ate dinner. As young as 3 years old.
Hereās what shook me even further: Before the Civil War, a lot of slave owners were going in debt and could not afford their properties and were not producing enough cotton and sugar to maintain their lifestyles. Slaves were used as HUMAN CREDIT CARDS. Slaves were a guaranteed line of credit. You could get HALF of your propertyās value depending on how many healthy and able slaves you owned.
My people were human credit cards and lines of credit to BANKS. We were property. We were labeled as equipment and nothing more.
There is no such thing as a good slave owner. They owned my PEOPLE and used them as checks and balances. This cycle continues with prison and brutality. I do not want to hear shit about āWhy can only Black people say this or that?ā I donāt want to hear shit about āweāre all human.ā
And by the way, not one of those slaves are at rest. Those spirits were so alive, you could feel their presence, their pain and someday, their revenge.
The front of the house and yard. This plantation was huge. Just thinking about my ancestors tending to all this landā¦
SOME of the enslaved names, ages, race and purchase price.
The living room.
Interior.
The dining room. That piece hanging above the table is ORIGINAL to the house. Thatās the fan that a slave as young as 3 years old had to operate manually with a string.
The view from the balcony in the main hallway. This is how they looked over the slaves while they worked in the yard.
*sigh* Names of the enslaved that occupied the shacks. Children included. Their names are written inside one of the shacks. Iām not sure if there are other names inside other shacks because I could only handle 2. After I saw the punishment equipment, I left.
Slave Shacks. These are NOT the original shacks. These were built to imitate them.
Slaves for Sale Ads.
The landscape of Slavery throughout the United States in 1860. JUST 1860. Let that sink in.
Note: The last time the home was OWNED by a Louisiana citizen was 1972. This is her original bedroom, her lipstick is STILL on the dresser. This is why the house has been updated since slavery times because it was occupied up until 1972. Regardless, this used to be where house slaves slept.
Jesus.
The balcony picture really just fucked me up. Iām sick.
I forgot to mention that this plantation is FULLY OPERATIONAL. Sugar is still being produced here on a REGULAR basis šššš
One day our ancestors will get revenge.
This is why I donāt have time for anyone who says āget over slaveryā or āit was such a longgg time agoā or even worst have weddings/events at plantations. Like yeah the architecture of that period was a beautiful but donāt let that shit cloud your mind because these places were ultimate hell for a lot of people.
Wow. I live in New Orleans, born and raised. Iāve never been on a plantation tour. One time I got lost going to my cousins house in the country and we had to stop at one to get directions, and some white folks were getting married there. That makes me sick to my stomach. I briefly walked to one of the slave quarters out of curiosity. But those list of slaves. Oh geez, my heart sank. Any of those could easily be one of my direct ancestors. š
Iām surprised the owners actually included the slaves, since majority of the plantation treat the slavery aspect as a footnote, if itās mentioned at all.Ā
http://www.oakalleyplantation.com/Ā I will never understand how youād WANT to have a wedding on a plantation. Ā SMDH

when it takes you a while to process what someone is saying and you realize they asked you a question
I cannot fucking believe I am drunk, past midnight, and tumblr is throwing fucking saturated fatty-acids at me
You are suddenly able to see numbers above peopleās heads which are counting down and you have no idea why. One person you meet reaches 0 andā¦
They sneeze. it then resets.
It bothers me when people say theyĀ āhate glitterā because itĀ āgets everywhereā andĀ ālasts foreverā. Like, thatās the best part of glitter??? You donāt want to live in a fairyland??? You bitch???
