With the exception of “The African Queen,” when I won Katharine Hepburn, I rarely get the girl or any girl. In “The Petrified Forest,” I won a slug of lead on my face. In “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre,” I won a bolo knife around my throat. I also came to a nasty end in “The Maltese Falcon,” with someone else walking off with the girl, whoever she happened to be. But now at long last, I win a girl, and what a girl — Audrey Hepburn, no less. I win her fairly and squarely too, against the tremendous odds of William Holden. When they started the picture, they weren’t entirely sure which of us, Bill Holden and myself, would win the girl. They asked me what I thought about it. ‘Girl Smirl,’ I said. ‘Let Bill win her. He’s more romantic, and besides, if I won her, I might have to shave every morning before reporting for work.’ But it was no good. They decided I had to win the girl. So I shaved every morning.
