"Ah! Thank - here, please let me help - " Though Dimitri knew that Duessel would never allow him something so facile as to help carry a heavy tray of food the extra few meters to their table, he nevertheless reached.
He had been surprised, in truth, when the knight had requested that he attend harvest festival with him. It was not his country, Ordelia - neither of theirs - but Dimitri had eagerly trailed along as well, knowing that in the past there had been some strife in the land, and wanting to see their regrowth with his own eyes.
They had done amazingly well for themselves, since the rumors of insurrection so many years ago. But that seemed to be simply how the Leicester Alliance fared, wasn't it? They found their strength not necessarily in unity, but in fighting for their individuality.
"It is no burden," he said, when their assorted platter of cheeses and meats alongside the melange of fresh fruits and vegetables from mere meters away. Plucking a cube of semi-firm cheese, he tested its spring gently between his fingertips before taking a gentle nibble of one corner, chewing thoughtfully before continuing; "I suppose the best place to begin is…well, not the beginning, but did you know that at one point the Leicester Alliance was part of my kingdom? Er - not my kingdom, it was hundreds of years ago, and I suppose I am not yet king…
"A-ah," Dimitri set himself back on track with a laugh and a shake of his head, smiling. "There was a territory dispute - or, no, it was an inheritance dispute, although in many cases they are one and the same…there was no apparent heir, and instead of naming one man to succeed, three sons were instead given their own parcels of land to rule. In turn, down the road, one of these sons died and what followed…well, I suppose it was another inheritance dispute, repackaged."
His brow furrowed. He had never thought of it like that.
"In any case, while the Kingdom and the Alliance by and large have a strong connection, there are some houses - such as this one - which have stronger ties, for one reason or another, to the Empire. The lines have been drawn, then shifted, then redrawn so many times," he added with another laugh, "I suppose it may get confusing for someone who would not have had this foundational knowledge."
