I’m going to level with you. I have listened to The Devil Went Down to Georgia for most of my life. We were a country music household, this was a staple of my childhood along with Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, and that one Chipmunks country album.
I have no idea what “Fire on the mountain run boys run/The Devil's in the house of the rising sun/Chicken in the bread pan picking out dough/Granny does your dog bite no child no” means and at this point I’m too scared to ask.
For once I can be of assistance.
Each of the lyrics comes from an old-time hickory song for fiddles, and is a lyric from that corresponding song.
"Fire on the Mountain" --> "Fire on the Mountain, run boys run"
Fire On The Mountain - Fiddle Player POV
"The House of the Rising Sun" --> "The Devil's in the house of the rising sun"
House of the Rising Sun
"Ida Red" --> "Chicken in the bread pan peckin' out dough"
Ida Red - Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys
"Granny Will Your Dog Bite" --> "Granny does your dog bite? 'No child, no'."
FTC #149 Granny Will Your Dog Bite
And for your furthered education, The Mountain Whipporwill.
Mountain Whippoorwill (aka How Hillbilly Jim Won the Great Fiddler's Prize)
this is the key part of the song, that a lot of people miss. people have this misconception that the contest between Johnny and The Devil is about who is the better fiddle player. but it isn't. its about who is the better fiddler.
in a time before things like radios and record players, every time you heard music was because there was somebody in the room with you playing an instrument. and many, many, many social events involved dancing, which requires music. so, if you're planning any kind of gathering in the american south or appalachia, you need to find a fiddler. and the fiddler's job is to play music that everybody knows and likes and can dance to.
the mistake The Devil makes in his bet with Johnny is that he misinterprets the contest as being about technical ability, so he has this big flashy song. he plays fast and impressively with a band of demons playing unfamiliar instruments in unfamiliar rhythms. he's definitely more skilled at playing than Johnny, and thinks he has it in the bag.
but Johnny wins because the contest is about being the best fiddler. the song uses these lines mentioned above as a shorthand for saying that Johnny is playing these songs. Johnny launches into a set of the most popular songs, played well, and that's what gives him his big win. A good fiddler knows all the hits, and can read the room to know what to play next. The Devil loses because he completely fails to read the room, and doesn't know the right songs.

It's hilarious to me that Al Capone was an amazing tipper. I get why it took so long to catch him.

A brief analysis of this ONE Luocha line about Yanqing that, if nothing else, makes me extremely suspicious of their potential relationship.
So I asked some people fluent in korean and chinese to dissect the delivery because I don't know anybody fluent in japanese. Enjoy.
So in the en vers, Luocha sounds almost surprised to be asked about Yanqing, but seems to dismiss tb almost immediately. Moreso it's like he dodges the question. Completely shrugs it off and calls it a day. This is consistent with kr and cn too. Notably the delivery doesn't make him sound inherently suspicious, but the swiftness in which he drops the subject without providing any information, useful or not, is. Also if this line was truly meant to be nothing, it wouldn't exist. Not in the form we have. So do with that what you will.
In kr, the wording is the same as in en, however there was disagreement on whether the delivery itself is suspicious or not, but there's evidence for the former. The first half of the line, just like en, is fairly normal if a bit inquisitive, but there is a noticeable shift in the dismissal where Luocha sounds almost coy. The first time I heard it, I thought his va was smiling through the delivery, but that could just be how he usually performs in every other scene anyway.
However, my friend did say that Luocha "very flippantly" dismisses the topic, stating that he "doesn't remember". Not that he knows nothing. He doesn't remember. What did he mean by this.
The cn vers is the most interesting in my opinion. Not only does Luocha refer to yanqing as "the/that prince", specifically he says he has "no impressions of (him) that prince", which, according to my friend's friend who I consulted, sounded like a lie. Specifically, Luocha says the line as if he "doesn't remember something that he clearly does". The repeated theme of "remembering" over other words in two languages is very suspect. Since the line lacks context, there was little to elaborate on about why remember was used or intended in the delivery.
Conclusion: the translators didn't give the localization teams a thorough breakdown of a 2-3 sentence long, throwaway voice line, so each director of their respective vo simply ran with their own interpretations, and the overlapping themes is just a result of the line itself being odd and suspicious in-and-of-itself, and not because the directors know WHY it's suspicious. However, since cn is the original language, cn is probably the most accurate to the intended vision and meaning behind the line, and MAY imply that Luocha and Yanqing have some kind of history.
Cope conclusion: Luocha not only absolutely knows Yanqing is an abomination of abundance, but the prince title is less a nickname relating to Yanqing's status as the general's ward, and more a reference to Yanqing being Yaoshi's son. And they absolutely have history that only Luocha remembers.
Thank you for coming to my Yanqing talk.
i love people actually . i think humans are beautiful and even if we can be cruel and mean there is still joy and kindness and hope and love . and we should talk about the bad things but we shouldnt forget the beauty in every atom
