And, in my blindness, I fail.

Who did not deserve, it pays the price.

Without instruction I struggle...

If they saw me, they would mock me,

I who boasted so much of my wisdom!...

But then I rest...

but then I remember: a frown is not in my nature.

The calm waters silence my ruin,

rocked by the sea of sleep, my conscience.

I am: one who surrenders respect

to thought armed in discipline,

who denies mediocrity

and refines its work

in what is destined for high virtues.

Even if I am left in ruins,

I remain upright, even if I see myself humiliated,

even in my own eyes.

It is not to my liking to hear

the black asp of the devil and his sin

he will not win, he knows it,

however much he aspires with shame to wound me

in body and high soul.

It is not my habit to surrender

to pain, rather it is my spirit to brandish myself

opposed to impious strife,

opposed to seeing my neighbor as a burden

or an empty shadow;

My open hand extends

to Him my Faith, which guards me like a shield.

And yet... I pray

to halt the cruel state

I face, for I stumble

though I am well-versed in it.

And I long for the call of rest.

Meditating on my actions,

I like to advance slowly from my threshold,

banishing the noise,

Silence and its topaz court:

And listen to its joyful silence!

It's been a couple of weeks too much... just TOO MUCH, nothing but work and work and work and work AND WORK AND WORK!!!!!!!@$#@#@?#!?@#;!@?#.............. (IronSPDR.exe has stopped working)

Um... sorry about that. There have been some administrative changes, I've had a backlog of patients at my office, and I've had to take half a million reports home. I've been more grumpy than usual, and I'm recovering from a mini gastroenteritis outbreak (at least it was two days off, if being bedridden counts as a day off 😑).

Anyway, at least since Saturday I've been able to polish a little lyrical piece. I hope you like it. In Castilian metrics, this is a stanza called a "Lira" and is one of the most elegant, used especially by Fray Luis de León during the Spanish Golden Age. It is composed of heptasyllabic and hendecasyllabic lines with consonant rhymes 7A 11B 7A 7B 11B (my condolences to English speakers; it's such a delicate type of stanza that it even pained me to translate it into free verse 😭 but I couldn't think of how to adapt it to English metrics. If anyone has suggestions, please share them; I always love exploring new types of meters.)

Aquel Tiempo es precioso

que olvidamos y escapa a nuestra mano,

a nuestro anhelo ansioso,

nuestro abrazo lejano,

cual sueño en fuga al despertar temprano.

La imagen polvo vuelta,

inerte más que la desierta arena.

La cuestión no resuelta

y sus actos, con pena

marchan ciegos a un fin que no serena,

sin alto, sin remanso;

víctimas que el crepúsculo aceleran

por perder su descanso,

tal Tiempo nunca vieran

que el error de sus mentes detuvieran.

Se embriagan del presente.

Su ídolo es el relámpago: el instante.

Devoran lo aparente,

jamás les es bastante,

¡robándole al futuro su semblante,

la paz a mi trabajo!

A mi esperanza agotan, mi ira alientan.

Por mi oído cabizbajo

sus voces desorientan:

A su desidia yo rendirme, tientan.

Y, en mi ceguera, fallo.

Lo paga aquel que no lo merecía.

Sin instrucción batallo...

De verme, burla haría

¡Yo que tanto por sabio presumía!...

Pero luego descanso...

pero luego recuerdo: no es mi esencia

el mal ceño. El remanso

a mi ruina silencia,

mecida al mar del sueño, mi conciencia.

Soy: quien respeto entrega

al pensamiento armado en disciplina,

que lo mediocre niega

y su labor refina

en lo que a altas virtudes se destina.

Aunque quede en despojos

erguido sigo, aunque me vea humillado

hasta a mis propios ojos.

Oír no es de mi agrado

la negra áspid del diablo y su pecado

no vencerá, lo sabe

por más que aspire con vergüenza herirme

en cuerpo y alma grave.

No es mi hábito rendirme

al dolor, es más mi ánimo blandirme

contrario a lid impía,

contrario a ver mi prójimo cual carga

o una sombra vacía;

la mano abierta alarga

a él mi Fe, que me guarda como adarga.

Y sin embargo... rezo

para en alto frenar al cruento estado

que enfrento, pues tropiezo

aunque me halle versado.

Y anhelo del descanso ya el llamado.

Mis actos meditando,

gusto avanzar desde mi umbral despacio,

al ruido desterrando,

que es mi reino y palacio

el Silencio y su corte de topacio:

Libertad y sus goces,

los Versos, las Historias de armonía,

de sabios tornavoces.

¡Oh! al Tiempo acogería...

¡Y escuchar su silencio de alegría!

Emm... lo siento por eso. Ha habido algunos cambios administrativos, se me han acumulado pacientes en mi consultorio y he tenido que llevarme medio millón de reportes a casa. Lo he pasado más malhumorado que de costumbre y me estoy recuperando de una mini epidemia de gastroenteritis (al menos fueron dos días libres, si quedar postrado en cama cuenta como día libre 😑).
