Tell me, Muse, about the man of many ways... / Lover of the (greek) epics and tragedies. Spanish is my native language and domain english (maybe?)
Invocation to the Muse (originally writed in spanish hendecasyllabes, royal octaves, adapted to iambic pentameter)
I sing the ages grief itself had wrought,
and of the goddess, skilled in every art,
with courage armed, with aegis and with cloak,
who bent the rage that burned in Ares’ heart.
She who such love from heroes’ praise had sought,
and won the acclaim of peoples set apart.
Through heights and depths she passed in deathless story,
across the world, as escort unto Victory.
Thus every rival fell before her force,
upright upon the edge of spear and will;
but when chaos pressed hard upon her course,
her truest praise shone forth more radiant still:
a shield upraised that strengthened wall and course.
Worthy the tale that shall this change fulfill,
of her, once predator in martial hour,
now guardian of cities, watchful power.
Muse, light my thought; let dawn its pathway guide,
and steer the course of that first waking time,
be thou the voice that on my lips shall bide.
Within thy song and tale my path I climb
toward that past which conscious minds deny.
I know it well, and firm my steps now climb,
while soul takes wing and rises into air,
till I attain the city of Pallas fair.
A few details about the meter, because it's my favorite part of poetry. The three stanzas are called "Octavas Reales" (Royal Octaves). They are a type of eight-line stanza written in hendecasyllables with the rhyme scheme ABABABCC (in English, only consonant rhyme exists, but in Spanish, you can use assonance if the lines end their last syllable with the same vowel, or consonance if the last syllables have the same vowel and consonants; generally, the latter is more commonly used in formal poetry, while assonance is more common in popular poetry such as medieval ballads).
❤️❤️❤️THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR ALL YOUR BEAUTIFUL COMMENTS AND THOUGTHS: @ulises-aithon @rubynrut @sarafangirlart @defenestratedcowloftelesphorus @katerinaaqu @nzelyra @laiapolypharmakos @nerdy-or-smth-idk @armillaryspheres @iroissleepdeprived ❤️❤️❤️
I've always found this stanza a bit too ornate for my taste and difficult to read in such a long epic poem (for English readers, imagine Pope's Odyssey but with eight rhyming lines instead of just two!), but its musicality, its rhyme, is perfect for an invocation to the Muse. It's unique.
This is the same stanza that Ludovico Ariosto used to write his Orlando Furioso, and in Spanish, Alonso de Ercilla wrote La Araucana, which narrates the conquest of Chile, in the same way. Many Spanish translators before the 20th century also used this stanza to adapt Greco-Latin epic poems into Spanish.

It scares me when someone likes a post of mine (as opposed to a reblog of mine) because they could be liking anything. Fandom yaoi? I do that. Vent post? Rarely, but they exist. Random info dumping? All the time. Poetic yearning? Yeah. Short stories? My favorite.

hi everyone I'm currently doing a study on opinions towards retellings of classical literature please do take a couple moments to fill out this survey if you could be so kind, it's only short:
The first section of this form is about classical texts.

@ulises-aithon (honorary mutual), ahora toca etiquetar a mis mutis lusófonos pq me quedé sin hispanohablantes, ojalá entiendan: @antisocial-transfag, @guilhernunes, no sé no tengo a nadie más que triste
Ahora voy a mencionar a mis gentes: @laiapolypharmakos, @venomspecs, @jamescartoon, @arkimessa, @iroissleepdeprived, @perroulisses @nzelyra, @ironspdr6700, @simugeuge y quien quiera! 🩵😉
I remain upright, even if I see myself humiliated,
even in my own eyes.
It is not to my liking to hear
the black asp of the devil and his sin
he will not win, he knows it,
however much he aspires with shame to wound me
in body and high soul.
It is not my habit to surrender
to pain, rather it is my spirit to brandish myself
opposed to impious strife,
opposed to seeing my neighbor as a burden
or an empty shadow;
My open hand extends
to Him my Faith, which guards me like a shield.
And yet... I pray
to halt the cruel state
I face, for I stumble
though I am well-versed in it.
And I long for the call of rest.
Meditating on my actions,
I like to advance slowly from my threshold,
banishing the noise,
for my kingdom and palace is
Silence and its topaz court:
Freedom and its joys,
Verses, Stories of harmony,
of wise interpreters.
Oh! I would welcome Time...
And listen to its joyful silence!
It's been a couple of weeks too much... just TOO MUCH, nothing but work and work and work and work AND WORK AND WORK!!!!!!!@$#@#@?#!?@#;!@?#.............. (IronSPDR.exe has stopped working)
Um... sorry about that. There have been some administrative changes, I've had a backlog of patients at my office, and I've had to take half a million reports home. I've been more grumpy than usual, and I'm recovering from a mini gastroenteritis outbreak (at least it was two days off, if being bedridden counts as a day off 😑).
Anyway, at least since Saturday I've been able to polish a little lyrical piece. I hope you like it. In Castilian metrics, this is a stanza called a "Lira" and is one of the most elegant, used especially by Fray Luis de León during the Spanish Golden Age. It is composed of heptasyllabic and hendecasyllabic lines with consonant rhymes 7A 11B 7A 7B 11B (my condolences to English speakers; it's such a delicate type of stanza that it even pained me to translate it into free verse 😭 but I couldn't think of how to adapt it to English metrics. If anyone has suggestions, please share them; I always love exploring new types of meters.)
