Each time that I watch dps I sympathise with Neil’s father more and more because him being suspected around his mid 50s in 1959 means he’ll have seen ww2 and the crash of society and the economy afterwards and all the pain that came with that and the reason that he pressured Neil into going into a ‘Nobel pursuit’ and into being a doctor was because he was scared, he was so scared that neil wouldn’t have a good life because he’s seen the poverty and he’s lived through the pain and he was terrified of his son having to see the same things that he did, so he did everything that he could to make sure he’d have a good life and good money even if it meant throwing away his passions and his hopes and dreams. That doesnt mean I agree with him for doing what he did by any means, but I get why he did it. He just wanted the best for Neil and that presented itself through him controlling his every waking move, just to give him the life that he never could have had

AU where Thomas Perry doesn’t show up and Mr. Keating takes the Poets home and they talk about the play for days. They recite bits and pieces they remembered and Neil corrects them when they get a word wrong. Neil ends up performing one of his monologues in class, and again during a meeting, and he gets cast in the next play as well. When he graduates, he moves out of his parents’ house and goes to school for acting, using scholarships, part-time jobs, and with the help of Mr. Keating. He becomes a successful actor and Todd is a writer who always writes a character for Neil in all his stories and plays.
