I have a favorite companion.

I love him because of the love he has for his family and for the Doctor (a complete stranger).  

I love him because he prides himself for not having killed anyone in the war.  

And, the Doctor opens up to him. The Doctor did something so horrific in the last episode (The Waters of Mars), he finds himself not being able to hold it in anymore and opens up to someone.  Wilfred in these last moments was like a father to him.

I’ve never seen the Doctor talk to someone like this.  Not Rose, not Donna, nobody like he did with Wilfred right before his “death”.  It’s heartbreaking and you know that Wilfred was exactly the person he needed.

Also, the last episode where Ten “dies” marks the climax of everything that he has grown to be.  He’s changed so much since the beginning.  You might say he has a ways to go, but still.  I believe Eleven becomes the accumulation of everything that Rose, Martha, Donna, and Wilfred taught him.  Ten was fire and rage and loneliness.  Eleven can be terrifying, but you can see the rage fades and sadness overpowers him. 

Wilfred saw Ten in his last moments as his emotions became more than himself. And Wilfred shows him the best of humanity before Ten dies.

Bless Wilfred’s damn heart.
