1876 seated liberty half dollar (with a hole through it)

Why do/did people punch holes in their coins? Lots of reasons!

They could have worn it as jewelry (I love coin jewelry, I have several pieces that I wear regularly)

Maybe they tied their coins together with othes to make sure they don't get lost

Sometimes coins were used as makeshift buttons for clothes (those will usually have 2 or 4 holes near the center, unlike this one)

I've seen pennies made into washers for manufacturing/hardware stuff, but idk how common that actually is.

Holes will obviously damage numismatic value, but personally, I don't really care that much.

Having a piece of history that people touched and used in their everyday life is part of the alure of coin collecting to me, so I love coins that are a little beat up.

There's some graffiti on this coin, which will lower it's collector's value, but that's okay. I have no intention to sell it any time soon.

Someone carved 'M x C' on the left and the year 1836 on the right.

I imagine M and C were the first initials for two lovers and 1836 was an important year for them. Perhaps it was the year they met or got married. But I'll never truly know the full story behind those carvings.

The reason this is one of my favourites is that it meant something to someone. It's a piece of someone's personal history and it ended up in my care.
