I was thinking back to this panel about Norman’s “gentle” smile. It’s shown in a comedic light due to little Emma’s reaction and the comment. But a Royal Straight Flush is a Poker hand, and the goal in a poker game is too deceived your opponents. So the memory implies unintentionally or not that Norman’s “sweet” smile was already a facade since the beginning.

And now I’m sad. And I wished I didn’t think about it.

i gotta sneeze. anyway i think it’s really neat how the op of tpn shows you ray’s plan in plain sight, kinda like.......... how norman instantly figures it out. and how none of that’s explicitly disclosed to the viewer. also kinda neat how the story starts with ray having too many memories, and ends with emma starting hers from scratch. and............... the conny part.................. how it begins &. ends with conny playing a part in guiding them through ray.

Try not to think about how Ray probably has always associated Leslie's song with a sense of comfort and motherly love that he has never known. So the fact that he's humming the song to himself before he is prepared to commit suicide is likely a reflection of his mental state at the moment; he is trying to comfort himself because he's scared with what he's about to go through.
