I was potentially going to have Cube's teeth trimmed once to see if that would help him a little, but I knew his time was limited. He had an appointment for this Thursday. He was checked out before my trip and he seemed to have not really gotten worse, but he did lose some weight.

In the last like 48 hours he's deteriorated a lot. He's very suddenly drooling which indicates severe discomfort and/or pain, which wasn't happening even last week when I got back from the cruise.

But I've known this was going to happen since February when he first got his "oh god is this the end" checkup. He's gone since then being able to eat completely normally and having no issues. They really only started over the weekend.

It's tough to only have an animal live to 5 when they can live to 15+. This is the consequence of poor breeding with chinchillas, and it's also very much a reality with rescued animals that have unknown health histories.

Cube was my first chinchilla and I'd wanted one since I was 10 years old. Through him I learned so much about them and was able to give a much improved home to both him and my surviving Chins, Dexter and Sabu. I don't think I want to actively get a third chinchilla right now, but his cage will be open for anyone who finds their way to me.

Cube has his final appointment tomorrow. It feels very soon since it's in less than 24 hours, but I've been mentally preparing for this all year. He had 3 good years with me. I think that's better than 10 more years in his last home where he was fed improper food, had a wheel he couldn't fit in, and a tall cage full of plastic. In a room with a heater. Being allowed to roam free sometimes with ferrets and dogs. Dogs that had killed his previous companion.

And the neighbors don't care that my dogs bark or that my yard is messy. And they offer help. Because they know it's just me here and I have a large amount of property and a big house. And they ask how my cruise went.

The dogs did great on the walk and I'm hoping more walks will help them start getting along again inside.

The slightly trashy people on the corner let their pitbull get out. I've met him and he's a nice dog. But he was following us and I absolutely do not fuck with off leash dogs when I have my 2 dogs who can amp each other up. The other issue is I absolutely feel like if I became afraid at all, Sammie and Fina would both go fucking sicko mode. Frankie is a smaller pitbull but I don't want any more dog fights lol.

But then I yelled FRANKIE GO HOME at him and he left. A guy driving by had stopped, so I told him where Frankie lived and he went and got the owners for me. Bless that man with all the luck in the world. I would've just looped around the road again and gotten my other neighbors but it all worked out fine.
