I’m Not a Joke (No Soy Tu Chiste) is a campaign spreading awareness for the LGBTI community through art and design, created by Daniel Arzola (@Arzola_d) in light of the recent violent acts against the sexually diverse community in Venezuela and the World. It initially seeks to expand in the online community. If you’d like to share your opinion please do so via twitter using the hashtag #ImNotaJoke. Like my page on Facebook and share the posters to support the cause!
For every T-Shirt you buy, one dollar will be donated to the campaign

Hey,
So up top is a link to the story about Dr. V that we discussed during our meeting last Wednesday. It is a long piece, but I do suggest reading it in full. This story is really unfortunate. Essay Anne Vanderbilt died because she was afraid of being outed, and she was outed posthumously. Grantland's editor in chief, Bill Simmons, offers an explanation for what happened in an editorial after the article was published and had started to receive a lot of hate. He only realized that they had messed-up after the hate started to come in. Here's a link to his editorial, you may want to read it after you read the original article: http://grantland.com/features/the-dr-v-story-a-letter-from-the-editor/
Though this story is sad, it does bring a lot of awareness to trans* rights and to the desperately needed change regarding the way society views and treats people who identify under the trans* umbrella.

Human Sexuality is Complicated…
This is a list I made for YALSA’s The Hub on the wide range of YA literature featuring LGBTQ characters. See the full post and a downloadable pdf here.
LOVE but shouldn’t “trangendered” just be transgender?
Pamela Raintree Leads the Fight for Fairness
Although we didn't talk about this story at the meeting, I still thought that this video is great and that this woman is awesome. Pamela Raintree, a trans* woman, got up in front of the Streveport, Louisiana city council in protest of the possible repeal of an LGBT-inclusive anti-discrimination law that had been passed, 6 votes to 1, in December. The fairness ordinance is a law that makes it illegal for homosexual or trans* people to be fired or denied housing based on their sexual orientation or gender identity alone. It is quite astounding how brave Ms. Raintree is, and I really like the look on the councilman's face at the end. This video is definitely worth a watch.
So, after seeing this video I researched the story more, and while looking at news sources' coverage of this particular story, I saw a pattern of similar headlines like, "Trans woman dares Bible-quoting Louisiana city councilman to ..." or "Trans Woman Dares Homophobic Councilman to Stone her to Death". They all said similar things, like how she was courageous and how after she spoke to the council, the councilman decided to back down from trying to repeal this anti-discrimination law. Great, right?
Well....
