tdp fandom: does the thing

it’s all very exciting!

what i‘m not excited for is the discourse that is already happening. the introduction of adam will give us many different interesting interactions, and the fact that people are already putting him on a pedestal or demonizing him is so tedious to me. 

from what we’ve seen; adam is selfish. this doesn’t make him inherently abusive or evil. he could not handle the prospect of shiro going off into space, so he gave an ultimatum, and evidently left when things did not go his way. either way, adam was going to be alone and hurting, unless he could convince shiro to stay. but even then, it would only be prolonging the inevitable. the difference being-- he could be alone, with his husband in space or in a hospital, or just... alone- by himself. sometimes that’s easier. 

i don’t think he handled things very well with shiro. there is probably more to their discussions, ones we weren’t shown, but adam definitely could have approached things better. but it seemed like such a HUMAN decision to me. a man at the end of his rope, knowing that no matter what happens he’s going to have to sit and watch shiro leave or deteriorate. they both made their choices in the end, and their paths diverged in a very organic way. the way adam dropped his ultimatum is something that i have definitely experienced and witnessed in couples.

at the same time, there needs to be an understanding that adam and shiro broke up. they are not together anymore, and insinuating that they still are is getting ahead of ourselves. shiro has changed so much since he has been at the garrison that assuming that things would automatically work out is... naive. 

I love hunk not only because of his potential as a character, but also because of how (despite his lack of screen time) complex and potent the duality of his character is. 

Hunk is someone who is utterly unashamed with his passions. Someone his size and with a passion for food definitely means he has been ridiculed and belittled for his hobbies. However, not once (in my recollection) has Hunk ever expressed being ashamed or shown any hesitance in his love for food and cooking. And that? I think it is beautiful. Everyone should be so... upfront and positive about what they like and what their hobbies are-- should never be scared to enjoy something like sports or dungeons and dragons because of preconceived concepts of what type of people like them. 

Hunk is someone who shows extreme kindness and desires to protect those who matter to him, despite the consequences or anxiety that plagues him in doing so. But!! Something that people often forget!! Hunk is also one of the least tactful characters in the show!! He says things that he shouldn’t!! He accidentally pushes boundaries without meaning to cause harm or insult!! But he still does it, and continues to do it! His actions are brought out of kindness, especially his humour-- but it’s often misplaced, especially in serious situations. Hunk isn’t a precious cinnamon roll. He has done and said things that are wrong. Things he should have acknowledged were wrong and apologized for them.

The thing for me, with Hunk, is that he is the character I relate to the most. Because I also am unabashedly vocal with my interests; because I also worry to a similar degree to him; because I am also tactless and say things that come out the wrong way.

However, I can’t really “stan” him because.... There isn’t really.. much to stan. Hunk has faded so far into the background that it’s difficult for me to discern whether the character I have in mind is canon or fanon. 

The writers claim that Hunk is the rock for voltron, that he is a rounded character already and doesn’t need further development-- which I think is incorrect and that they are falling for one of the worst pitfalls in storytelling. You need to Show, not Tell. Don’t tell us that he is the anchour, the stabilizer-- show us!! Because he certainly has it in him!! However what we end up seeing is forced humour, which more often than not is inappropriate for the situation! Not only that, but he is one of the only characters in the show that has had no consequence for his actions or what he says, which is pretty unrealistic.

Honestly? I don’t even mind his penchant for food or his obtuse humour! Sure it’s pretty stereotypical and insulting, but it doesn’t need to be! If they absolutely must throw it into his character... I would LOVE to see Hunk use his passion for food and humour in a way that actually aids and adds to a situation. Let Hunk make food that’ll remind Lance of home and shave off a little of his homesickness! Allow him to make Shiro a tea equivalent in the nights that his ptsd is haunting him! Use it as a way to ease and welcome Keith back into the Voltron crew when he is restless! Man, there are so many small ways they could do this!!
