So, during the last week I was writing a fic that explores what happens between Daniel and Armand in the 2 months before they decapitate Loustat, but now, after seeing the finale I'll probably extend it to re-write what happens after the decapitation as well...
Because, as much as I loved the acting in the scene between Armand and Louis in the butcher shop (duh, they're brilliant actors), and as much as I loved the acknowledgement of what Armand so clearly needs, the scene is weird and comes out of nowhere.
Everything leading up to episode 7 suggested to me that Armand's motivation for decapitating Loustat was to stop the concert from going through, so he could stop the Great Conversion. Armand talks to Daniel about it with great distress, he mentions how the planet can't sustain such a great number of vamps. Gabriella is basically set up as the villain, as someone who wishes to aid in the Great Conversion.
But no, instead, Armand only decapitated Loustat so he could torture Louis? Who doesn't really have anything at all to do with the Great Conversion??? And Lestat meanwhile gets to hang out at the bowling alley with Daniel??? Who only complains at him???
It's just weird. Like, I expected some confrontation between Armand and Louis this season, but not this...
The decapitation doesn't actually lead to anything. Suddenly the Talamasca shows up to the bowling alley and *poof* we're back on the bus and it turns out the Talamasca wants the Great Conversion to happen?????????
Like, if they wanted Armand to be able to confront Louis (for what, even??? Shouldn't it maybe be the other way around (as much as I loooooove Armand)), I'm sure they could have done it in a way that doesn't red-con that this was about the Great Conversion???
[EDIT: After just watching the 'Armends' part of the scene again, I think it would have been cool if after that they would have moved on to discussing the Great Conversion (with Lestat also there in the room, obviously, and some quips from Daniel to go along with it or whatever).]
I feel like there is a huge problem with telling, instead of showing this season when it comes to any character who isn't Lestat. And at the same time they're also not telling or showing us anything at all...
Maybe I'll feel differently once I watch the whole season again (?) (I don't think so), but I think a big problem is that they tried to do too much in too few episodes. Another problem that I saw someone else talk about, and I agree with, is that in season 1 and 2 Louis had present-day pushback from Daniel, but Lestat has no pushback at all this season, making it impossible to track what the narrative is doing, and in what ways it is unreliable (which is nice and convenient for the writers, when they want to explain away some of the glaring issues).
On a surface level I enjoyed the season. There is potential for things that can happen in season 4, but if I look too deeply I'm not so happy... And I don't know at this point if it's because of Lestat's narration, or because of the choices of the writers (which are really the same thing, I guess).
Anyway... I'm gonna continue writing my fic, and pretend that the decapitation plot was actually really necessary and rational and instrumental in Armand trying to stop the Great Conversion :)

idk I enjoy the violence and the angst and the scary unhinged armand but this just was not satisfying there was no logic or satisfaction to this one. thatās not my haunted marionette thatās some fucking paper doll with no actual development to go this level who the fuck is that. got a whole lot of nothing out of the whole finale and usually Iām FED by evil fucked up armand but like. so unearned. unseasoned.
not even serving the plot like I thought lestat was our main character. unnecessary revisitation of loumand wasting finale screen time I donāt even know what purpose this served narratively Iāll probably rewatch to try and make heads and tails of. whatever this was but like this shit didnāt fucking make any sense why did they do that? take some of regina and louisā accountability and agency away? make armand out to be a big cartoon villain which he IS NOT and NEVER HAS BEEN all of his motivations up until this point have been his religious values if not his desire to survive and avoid loneliness in his survival and while perhaps āthe stepsā are serving as a new version of religion and repentance for him this just. it makes sense for him to be against the great conversion so why make him say it isnāt about that. just to hurt louis? to try and make it up to himself that heās been so weak for so long is it overcompensation? I can make up reasons all day but the point still sticks that this was not developed by this season it is me trying to comprehend this butchering of a character I have spent years trying to crack open and understand as fully as possible and theyāve spit in my face over it. oh yeah devilās minion off screen making evil plans off screen devolving into madness off screen IT DOESNT FUCKING MAKE ANY SENSE!!! WHY DID THEY DO THAT
idk like other than a couple odd moments the new season was fine. enjoyable even through the messy cunty campy shit and the few strange lines and the repetitive use of armand in the same way for end of episode scary moments. fine. if they gave me a good finale it would have been fine. but like??? just all the armand shit??? ik itās because heās my favourite character and thatās probably why itās only now breaking through to me but like what are we doing what was all that. is this the best use of our last hour?? we have nothing else lets just go ooohhh armand so evil so scaryā¦.. guys you all hate armand right look at this!!! fucking hellllll oh my god.
