Nolie Goes To NXT
Took my boy Nolie to a WWE NXT live event last night in Indianapolis. As you can see in this picture taken a half hour before the show began, he was in heaven all night.
Ā Nolieās eyes didnāt leave the big screen once he noticed that they were playing videos on it.
He went nuts for the ring, but it seemed to click for him when Oney Lorcan walked by us on his way to the ring and nodded right at him as Nolie waved his arms like crazy. Then, Ember Moon shook his hand after her match and called him aĀ ācutieā, and he figured out that the wrestlers he saw on TV were RIGHT THERE and he could talk to them. It was ON.
And then this happened. Tommaso Ciampa made a beeline for olā Nolie Boy after DIY beat the Authors of Pain. There was a really sweet moment where Ciampa hugged Nolie, so Nolie kissed him on the cheek and this picture happened. I assure you by his reaction after my phone, the floor camera, and hundreds of people werenāt pointed at him, that Nolie was FREAKING OUT. He said his favorites wereĀ āthe champion boysā (DIY).
...and then this happened. All week, every morning Nolie would ask me if it was the day he would go to see Shinsuke Nakamura. He LOVES Nakamura. He does theĀ āYEAAAAAAAAOH!ā bridge-back thing all the time, heās done the weird cross-armed twitchy thing at preschool before, he has an irrational dislike of Samoa Joe because he saw Joe push down Nakamura once - the kid is obsessed. Nakamura walks by Nolie during his entrance, turns to him, and reaches out just far enough to where they touch fingertips. The aftermath is the picture above - Nolie literally was so happy that he cried a little. It was like Toddler Beatlemania. After the match, Nakamura walked by again and reached out the NXT Championship belt to where Nolie could touch it quickly. 12 hours later, thatās all Nolie can talk about. When I dropped him off at school this morning, he was bragging to the school nurse about his friend Nakamura.
I have a CD in my car of wrestler entrance songs that I play when Nolie is with me because they calm his anxiety when he goes to preschool. On the way home from the show, he had me play Nakamura's song on repeat for the entire hour. The boy literally sang himself half-to-sleep in the backseat, and kept asking if I knew that Nakamura would beat "Bobby Roooooo".
I'm so thankful that my boys get to reach out and realize that their heroes are real. Getting to take Eric (my older son) to see his buddy Ace at the baseball diamond over the summer, and now Nolie having this star experience with Nakamura. My parents tried their hardest and I hold no ill will, but I never got this as a kid. I'm so happy that I can watch them experience moments like that and see that excitement grow in their hearts before my very eyes. I have some great friends who facilitated this, and there were some fine women and men who made Nolie's night one he might not forget (he's 3 - this might literally be the earliest memory he can muster when he gets older).
This all being said, Nolie did ask me if we could see Bayley sometime. So I guess I have a new Daddy mission, should I choose to accept it (and I do)...

My Security Blanket
Friday night. Washing the dishes. Covered in water because despite doing this for my entire adult life by myself, I'm clueless. Cool dude stuff, obviously.
I'm standing there and I have this weird breakthrough. I don't know if it's big or small or what it may be, but it is coming out of me and I am dealing with it in a real way right now. I don't get to see my therapist for a couple of weeks and I won't say the right words if I just say this out loud to someone right now, so you get to be my audience while I try to process this.
The great thing about therapy is that it has made me a more heady person while letting myself explore parts of my brain that I hadn't visited before. Even when I'm not in that chair for that hour I pay for, I've noticed myself connecting things I had never connected before or suddenly having events and thoughts I had blocked out spill out when I least expect them to. I'm not the only one and this isn't a rare thing; I'd never claim that. But while it's not rare, it's really nice. I know the word "nice" is practically a curse word when it comes to writing, but that's the word I need right now. Nice.

Who could forget this landmark Wrestlemania moment?
Okay, Mike Huckabee has finally gone too far.
I donāt remember this at all, but I guess pro wrestling got kind of awesome in 1993.
Poignant words from Pope Francis today in Congress. Really makes you think about whatās important in life.

You wonāt find me sharing much about my therapy online, but if anyone needs a good post-therapy session song, this is the one I play in the car when Iām driving out of the parking lot.
Like, how do you do that?
Iām never not struggling with something internally. Tonightās struggle is with something I absolutely, positively cannot change. As cool as time travel will be when we can go back and change things, that frightens me. Thatās not why Iām typing. Iām typing until the bad thoughts get out of my head and I can go to sleep. But, how can people just give up everything at a drop of a hat and go chase a dream? How is that possible? How does the confidence form in someone to be able to do that? The concept of believing in yourself so much that you are cool with chasing something that every logical ending in the universe but one has you laying in a puddle of your own failure is astounding to me. Yet, we hear the stories every day.Ā āSo and so moved across the country with $20 in their pocket to make their dream come true.ā āThis person bailed on their life as they knew it at 18 to go make something of themselves.ā ā(Person A) maxed out every credit card they could find to make their passion project come to life.ā How does someone become that bold? Better yet - how are they born that bold? Thereās no way it can be something they develop, because thoughts and actions like those canāt possible come from any sort of long thought. But as much as those people intrigue me, theyāre also the ones I admire the most. My life story has been one not of risk, but of constantly running from risk. From day one of having any sort of independence and power over my own actions, the number one dictating factor in what I do has been my lack of belief in myself. I donāt believe in myself one bit. I get to the edge and I convince myself that I donāt belong. Itās why I have to be so public and frank when I get close to risk and I donāt jump - I have to have someone tell me Iām okay to get my head above water after how badly I beat myself up when I get close to something great. I have been on the edge of so much cool stuff and I have run so far away from all of it. Itās the anxiety of being exposed as the fraud I know that I am and others seem to think that I am not. Whether itās been moving far away and making a new life or creating interesting and unique things footsteps from this desk, I always stop myself because Iām the one who tells me that I canāt do it. I try not to talk a lot about my therapy because people donāt need to know. But one thing Iām finding through it is how introspective I am. From those who have commented on it, itās seen by others as a blessing. From my perspective, it is an absolute curse. Sure, itās a great tool when coming back from a bad dip, but I have a feeling most of those bad dips would never happen if I could just get out of my own head and jump.Ā Itās very loud and vibrant for me today. Iām on the edge of something that could be a great artistic release for me and maybe something that I could provide for the world to enjoy on a broader scale than anything I have ever done. But even as I take the risk of letting people extremely close to me know what might be happening and verbalizing it in ways I have not gotten to do yet, I already see the roadblock rising. Iām already hearing the whispers in my own head, telling me that nothing can work out for me or that what I want isnāt worth anyone elseās time. So, how the hell do you stop thinking and just do? This is going to be the death of me. Iām tired of living an entirely unremarkable life because of me. I want much more than I have, but I also want to know that Iām worth it and that I have it in me to put in the work to be much more than I am and give much more to this world than I have. Iām not better, but I think I can go to bed now. Thanks, kids.
Roddy.
Itās a few hours later. Iām trying to let it digest. It should notĀ be this profound or sting this bad. I never met the guy. I didnāt know him personally. Aspects of him were just weird, cartoonish things for me to joke about (especially later in his life) because itās easier to laugh at what we donāt understand. Professional wrestling is so trivial and silly. Thatās how it survives as an industry - itās a ridiculous escape. It shouldnāt hold as much water as it does. Iām not in the frame of mind to analyze why that is and Iām probably not smart enough to ever give you an answer. Ā But for whatever reason, it does.Ā I remember that when Ultimate Warrior died, that hurt a bit. Thatās what little Tommy idolized. Four years old, in a weird world of constant transition where I didnāt really have a steady male role model to connect to, and thereās this unrealistic superhero. He wasnāt human. And then he did what all humans do. The pain I felt then was both that a man died and left his family behind after making amends that no one ever thought he could, and that when that icon of excess and unreality passed on, the little piece that I could still connect to little Tommy probably died with it. Roddy hurts way more though. Itās been a thought thatās been in the back of my head for a few years. Iāve always been too embarrassed to put it into words, even internally. I think I might share this feeling with a lot of other people, but I wonāt dare speak for anyone but me. As I grew, I noticed that Roddy Piper connected with a lot of people as they grew older and stepped out into the world. Yes, we are able to see talent for talent and not just the smoke screen thatĀ ātheyā want you to see. However, to me Roddy represented something far moreĀ ārealā than any hocus-pocus set of maneuvers or cutesy monologues could ever hope to. One of Roddyās strongest professional strengths was his ability to weave his perception of reality with the fabricated storyline of the day. Even in cartoon land, it always seemed like you got a large portion of the real man in his performance. With Roddy, I always got a sense of a man who fought with a lot of darkness. Even late in life as he grew a reputation for telling tall tales when he spoke candidly, I never felt like he was insincere about the fact that his life wasnāt the best before stardom. Facts could have been skewed or misremembered, but there always was a perception like there was a pain in Roddyās soul, as a man and as a character. As people, even if we can hide it well, thereās a lot of pain every day. But with your traditional protagonist of fiction, they always hide that pain. As kids, we either have that pain hidden from us, or we hide it ourselves in some screwy way. Thatās how we relate to those icons. Rooting his on-screen persona in villainy, Roddy never had to hide that pain - even when he put on a white hat. Thatās where my connection is. With the person and the produced image, Roddy Piper represented someone with a black cloud hanging over his head, but one that he was aware of and never fought against. Roddy had a rough edge or three, but he cut his way to success using them as blades. Roddy fought through whatever sadness or pain he had come to him and he became a success because of it. I often say that IĀ āfeel all the colors of the rainbowā, meaning that I feel a lot of things, most of which I wouldnāt wish on any of you. Roddy Piper was someone you could tell felt all the colors of the rainbow. In a world where wearing a mask and a cape gave you a shield from lifeās torment, I was able to latch onto whatever part of himself Roddy selflessly put out on television for our entertainment.Ā I have made no secret that I deal with a lot of darkness myself. I will never, ever compare myself to Roddy or ever claim to know the details of another personās pain. But thatās where I connected with Roddyās work. He wasnāt perfect. He hurt - in fact, he could be hurt quite easily. But in the face of the physical anguish and emotional heartache, he became a monster to attack the world that wronged him. Itās what most of us probably wish we could do with our misery.Ā The world makes us hurt a lot, but it also tells us that weāre not allowed to show anyone that we hurt. Roddy didnāt say it, Roddy didnāt perform it, but Roddyās eyes whispered to us,Ā āI hurt tooā. He hurt just like we hurt. Most heroes of our world are heroic because they donāt cry the tears that we cry. Roddy Piper was a hero because he cried the same tears that even the saddest of us cry, he battled the demons of the world, and he kicked ass under a mask of distress. I couldnāt honestly tell you that Roddy Piper was my childhood hero. I canāt label what he became to me as an adult. But whatever it was, itās something thatās left a hole. Thank you for giving an angry boy with all the sadness in the world on his shoulder some hope, Roddy. Rest well.
Donāt tell anybody, but Iām a fraud.
As I write this, it's about two and a half weeks from when I load up in a car and drive to Cleveland, Ohio. While I have no financial investment, I have a big emotional investment in this weird pop culture gathering under a pro wrestling umbrella called Wrestling Geek Fest. Put together by this really cool card game company called Filsinger Games, it's a series of different events that encapsulate being a wrestling nerd under one roof - video game tournaments, live podcasting, wrestling-themed comedy and, of course, live matches.
As part of a video game-based web series I work on called Joe Gagne's Funtime Arcade (alongside - you guessed it - Joe Gagne), we were invited to come out and participate in the festivities. We're doing our own panel, we're hosting the video game tournaments, and we'll be around for general gaming fun. But also, because of other cookie jars that I've dabbled my fingers in, I'm doing a lot more stuff. I'll be a guest on comedian Will Noonan's "High Pathetically" live podcast recording, I'll be around the late-night comedy shows in some form and fashion, and I'll be doing color commentary on at least a few of the matches for the Saturday evening wrestling show. On top of that, I've been taking part in a lot of logistical calls with Todd Joerchel, one of the great gents involved in putting this shindig together, and I had a hand in booking the previously-referenced comedy show.
While I have nothing invested in this event financially, I have a lot invested emotionally and artistically. This really should be a crowning achievement of a lot of hard work. I go, I do some stuff, I'm with my people. I should be thrilled - and don't get me wrong, I am mostly looking forward to everything in a positive way. However, there's this small part of me. Well, it's probably small, but the voice it projects is way louder than all the joy.
Maybe this will be the weekend I finally get exposed as a fraud.
My wife took a great picture of our friendsā son at a street festival last night and I thought it looked like the cover of a of an indie rock album, so I went and made it into that.

Sometimes on Full House, small children would just dance with ladiesā undergarments on their heads.
We know your type. You're dreading something this weekend. A loved one/friend/partner has convinced you to come to a viewing party that they are attending on Sunday. Don't worry, I am here to help.
I wrote this thing. If you or a loved one are a non-fan of pro wrestling, but are stuck watching WrestleMania on Sunday, I wrote this short guide to help you keep up if you want to. If you donāt want to, I just wrote weird things that are kind of funny.
