At the same time that Mylohyus roamed North America's forests, a close relative, Platygonus, thrived in more open habitats (although it too could be found in forests). It too grew bigger than modern peccary, and had long slender legs that indicate it was a fast runner. It also had a much longer tail than modern peccary and it has been suggested that it used this tail to communicate in open spaces (for example, to warn its herdmates of danger, or "flagging"!).
