Self-Reflection
For me, my first semester here at VCU has changed me into a far more independent person. Before coming to college, Iām almost embarrassed to say my parents did most of the work. I almost never did laundry, I never learned how to cook because my parents already did that for us, and I never bothered to think about money. Iāve never had a job, so itās still my parentās money Iām using to buy necessities, but Iām much more aware of what I purchase than I previously was (mostly because I could just ask my parents ācan you buy me such and such?ā and they normally would). So being away at college has given me the opportunity to become more independent. I think the most surprising part is that it wasnāt a difficult transition at all. I really enjoy living on my own away from my parents, so maybe that made the switch easier for me.
As a student, Iām not sure how much Iāve really changed. I mean, I have noticed Iāve become slightly less of a procrastinator than I was in high school, which is certainly nice. I work harder on things for longer periods of time, and I try not to put everything off till the last minute. It helps, in our Focused Inquiry class, that we have so many workshops and drafts for all of our papers. Before, I would almost never have a draft unless it was absolutely necessary, and even my first drafts were basically the same thing I planned on turning in as my final. No one ever gave me any actual feedback on the concepts of my papers in high school, and my grammar was usually pretty flawless, so there was really nothing I could revise. But in this class, I feel like Iāve been able to take my peer reviews and actually incorporate it into improving my papers. Itās a far more enjoyable experience for me.
