"You can tell me that you never loved me, you can throw your childish insults at me because some part of you thinks it is the only way you can REALLY hurt me, but don't you ever punish Damien for what is between you and me. Feel the way you want to feel about me, but don't reflect that onto him. He doesn't deserve it, and neither do you." (Shay to Breslin)

At the sudden, unexpected sound of her voice, he starts - a small, barely perceptible movement, but a start nonetheless. As he lifts his dark eyes to meet hers, they seem somewhat lighter in colour than usual. There’s a flicker deep within them, of confusion or perhaps even vulnerability… and then it disappears, as quickly as it came.
“Shay-“ (He can’t help using her first name, despite how much he might want to insult her) “- I have no interest in the boy.” There’s a strange weariness to his voice, yet the way he spins a pen between his fingers suggests something deeper, perhaps. He can’t even bring himself to quip “for now”, the thinly veiled threat seeming pathetic even to him.
He groans softly, his body temporary collapsing inwards as he runs a hand through his hair. When he speaks again, his voice is a whisper.
“I’m… tired.”
"--- I am too."
And there it was. The mask lifted, the face underneath exposed.
Her words had weighed as heavily in the air as his had.
"I never believed you. But believe me, I wanted to. I tried to force myself to believe the words you said to me that day. I repeated them over and over in my head, used the words as armor whenever my thoughts were plagued with the memories of you and of us. Some days it worked. Other days it didn't."
She paused, took in a breath, looked off to the side.
"I should have never come here."
And just like that, she headed out the door.
“…Wait!” Before he knows it, before he even has time to process a thought, his body moves of its own accord. He rises, so quickly he knocks over a chair in his haste. His feet feel heavy, unwieldy as he steps towards the door.
“…Please don’t go.” His voice is… strange. It doesn’t contain any of its usual power or strength. It’s gentle, almost like a child’s, and when she looks back at him she’ll see his shoulders slightly hunched, his gaze cast downwards towards the patterned carpet beneath his feet. He hitches a deep breath, and it shakes slightly.
”I-“ He can’t quite bring himself to say he’s sorry. He just hopes she sees it in his eyes.
He’s trying. Whether he wants to or not.
