Hidden in the lush hills of a sleepy humdrum Netherbridge has always had the warmth of sun and the blessing of smiles strewn across all of its inhabitants. Idyllic scenes of kindness are often exchanged by its residents, bygones are long forgotten and buried beneath pearly grins. Discord, malcontent, scandal are brushed away quickly, and instead, all is forgiven with an embrace. However, even the best kept secrets always find a way of returning.

Decades passed since the last significant incident occurred and now even those left to tell the tale find themselves losing memory of the events that transpired in early Spring, 1781, a little over thirty years ago. Beyond the lavender fields, hidden behind the valley of sunflowers, there’s a familiar scratching that does not stop at windows. It enters houses, creeps over fields and dances in the seas bordering the quiet little town. The people residing, and visiting, remain oblivious to the oddity amiss as they prepare for the most extravagant nuptials the town has seen in the last thirty years. Young master Crowley, the eldest son of the esteemed Lord Crowley, had finally given in to his father’s ardent wishes and agreed to marry an abundantly wealthy noble lady after much incessant quips regarding the bride’s hefty dowry.

Gossip runs amuck and announcements quickly follow, invitations sent far and wide, inviting family, friends, and acquaintances to witness the festivity of the century. Crowds of people flock from all corners of the tranquil estate, bringing their own mark upon the fete; carrying, brews, crafts, jewels and silks. Where there is entertainment, there is also an opportunity to strengthen business and garner a prestigious reputation. Behind gloved hands, there’s whispers of potential scandal, hundreds of eyes are keen to watch in glee to witness any chance of chaos unfold awry.

With the convergence of new and old, ghosts of a bloody, dreary past haunt from the beyond. It is said that such a harrowing phenomenon has returned to pay for a promise long overdue. The clock ticks with the creaking of vengeance underneath the floorboards.

Peace never lasts when broken shadows of the past return to rain hell upon those whose souls have been tainted with the cruellest of deeds. The porcelain mask of the town shatters when the truth is unveiled from an unnatural realm beyond.

I don't want to sound ungrateful or preachy, but this is an issue I really want to touch on. I also know I'm not the only content creator that feels this way based on some of the conversations I've had, and many have spoken about this before me, much more eloquently than I'm about to do.

The like to reblog ratio on Tumblr posts is a nightmare.

FREEDOM ISN’T ENOUGH

CAEDES CORVI WAS AN END IN ITSELF, AND NOTHING IN BETWEEN. It was power and it was justice and it was all the world’s forgiveness if only they did not question the ties that bound them. Brought to existence by The Beast itself, the Nihilum were offered the greatest thing a person could covet: the completion of a desire. Whatever they wished for, would be, and all they could ever want, was given. All it demanded in return was sacrifice, the total annihilation of self. Paradise was but another word for man’s folly and to them, hunted and made myth by sport, there was never any other way the story could have ended.

The Nihilum made quick work of jeweled artifacts, devastated ambition like pillars among the pantheon, and most importantly they stole secrets without so much as a whisper to their name. Like stars plucked from some endless sky, misfortune followed wherever they went. They were myth and legend to the public, a story within the already tattered tapestry of history; and they were monsters to those who would fall so easily. Their work was of no moral productivity or great use to the betterment of society, they were secrets hidden among the cosmos, and a mystery upon themselves. No one understood the depths they would go to salvage their spot in the world, the things they paid for the price of freedom, no one ever dares question them. The invisible hand of desire led them where they were required to go, and so while it was fate who brought them together, it was choice that bound them as one.

It would be the loss of their leader that would cause it all to come undone.

1993 — the beast has come to collect what you owe. The crows arrive in a murder of three, and descend upon you in a swarm of dark matter. Clouds darken to a nervous shade of gray and it matters not where you are, what time it may be, or what tragic state you are in, the sight of the bird’s dark plumage rubs the wound raw again.
