Women in a “Complicated” Relationship with Social Media.
Just as Facebook let’s you categorize your relationship status as “Complicated”, they same could be said with our relationship with Facebook itself...and most Social Media. Of course, Social Media is an amazing modern tool to share connections, ideas, memories, thoughts on a particular subject and whatnot, but it also invites people to scrutinize you and women often have the shorter straw. And this is categorizing the majority of women on Social Media without adding the additional issues other demographics might suffer like women of color, disable women, transwomen and even...men. It seems that the worst you can be is in relation to femininity; we share too much we are called sluts, Men showing vulnerability are weak, opinionated black women are angry and the lists goes on and on and as you rank your flaws as told by the audience in this case the “followers” and ‘friends” you stop finding or engaging in the things that make social media enjoyable. Not being active, become a private user, outright deleting your account sounds more and more tempting. But “trolls” can be fought and Social Media needs all the women who are unapologetic, shameless and who when they can’t educate, let the ignorant remain ignored. We can get out of this toxic relationship with social media and make of a healthy one by refusing to be victimize and recognizing the strength in our battle through the world as a female and become a fighters for the treatment we deserve.
