Thrift and antique stores were where Julie felt most at home. Most of everything Joanne could squeeze into her beat up Camaro once belonged to someone else. All of their plates and cups were mismatched and chipped. Their blankets were well loved and softened from years of detergent and wrapping around shoulders. It was only fitting that Joanne made friends with Santiago while on the road and as a result, kept in touch with him. Joanne always had a string of 'people' for something: mechanics for the car, antique store owners for wares, and hotel owners when she wanted an actual bed. Santiago fell right in the middle.
"Long time no see, but I'm hoping I can make it up to you with coffee? Provided you have time to briefly close up?" Julie said with a guilty smile. She waved her car keys. Then, paused at the sight of brochures surrounding the register. Julie pointed a finger at one particular company's advertisement. "Is this why you texted me about skydiving last week?"

It was a long day at the office, but thankfully without too many tears. Julie looked down at the dog curled up under her feet. She was in the middle of finishing up her notes, but still trying to figure out if this particular "patient," a stray puppy, would be going home with her for the next couple of days. Sometimes, she liked to take the strays without fosters in for a few nights, then they could decompress independently before moving into the shelter or a more permanent foster home. Julie was still in a mental debate when the hinge on the office door opened. She looked up at the sight of Mati and offered a slight smile. "Hey, what do you think about maybe stopping for some fries on the way home today?" She asked, testing the waters. "I'm sorry about having to cancel this weekend -- my mom got a flat in Rochester."
Technically, her mother did get a flat in Rochester. She hadn't called Julie for help, though. The white lie was better than the truth. Even if she did feel guilty for lying to her favorite coworker rather than sharing the truth.

Where: Pure Roots
Julie often oscillated between vegan, vegetarian, and pescatarian. It really depended on how she was feeling energy-wise. The last time she went to Pure Roots was a little over a month ago -- most of her orders were to-go this first winter in Clearwater. With the temperatures beginning to change and the trees beginning to shake off some layers of snow, Julie wanted to explore again. She wound up at one of the outdoor chairs at the bistro, enjoying the faint nip of the breeze, when she caught sight if Liv out in the open. "I told you I would make it through the winter," Julie teased. She settled into her bistro chair with a warm smile. "Are you enjoying the sneak peeks of Spring?"

Julie entered the exam room without making too much noise. Just like kids, no animal really enjoyed the vet, so she did her best not to spook animal and owner alike. "Good afternoon, you must be Giovanni," she greeted, crouching down to make herself level with the patient of the moment -- a little Jack Russell Terrier named Cannoli. "And you must be Cannoli."
She let the little dog sniff at her hand for a moment. Then, looked up at his owner. He looked slightly nervous, but no more than most of the owners that came in.. "Your paperwork mentioned being worried about his leg? Is he able to put any weight on it?"

"I have to say: I'm really disappointed about Joann's," Julie said from across the table. She frowned at her current crochet project. Sure enough, she was probably going to run out of this yarn cake, which came from none other Joann's.
With a sigh, she put her project down, and swirled her iced coffee so the faint layer of water mixed in. She and Naomi met every few weeks to enjoy a coffee and a pastry and a craft. It was the exact type of friendship that served Julie well -- just two old biddies at heart enjoying a slow afternoon. "The last time we were here you mentioned maybe going on a date? Did you? How'd it go?"

"I told you I would be making daily house calls, so here I am," Julie greeted. She stood on Lorraine's doorstep and gave her work bag a pat. The canvas bag was a lot like Mary Poppin's bag at this point, but it served Julie well if she ran into any strays on her way home.
In this case, her way home meant a detour to Lorraine Novak's home to check on a local cat colony. "Have you seen the orange tom cat since yesterday morning? I'm determined to get him in one of those traps sooner rather than later."

When: Five Years Ago
Where: Glowing Embers
After coming home to a changed apartment and arriving to Alejandro's disconnected voicemail for the past couple of hours, Julie went for a drive and called as many hospitals, jails, and mutual connections as possible. Somehow, like a moth to a flame, she found herself in glowing embers. It was within a couple of minutes that she realized Glowing Embers was less of a dive bar and more of a gentleman's club. She still stayed, though, her car was low on gas and her phone was due to die.
"I'm sorry," she said to the woman who was keeping her "company." Really, what she was doing was letting Julie waste her time, and for that Julie was grateful and guilty. "I know you could actually be working rather than listening to me. Everything's a fucking mess right now, and I don't even know why, or what I did, but I never thought I'd be in a situation like this. This is the exact type of thing that would happen to my mom."

Cassius never minded the rain.
It was the kind of steady downpour that turned the city into a haze of slick pavement and glowing streetlights, the kind that made people rush for coverâbut Cass? He took his time. Hands in the pockets of his worn leather jacket, he moved through the near-empty sidewalk.
He stopped under the awning of a late-night diner, shaking the rain from his sleeves before pushing the door open. The place was nearly emptyâjust a couple of truckers at the counter, an old guy nursing a coffee in the corner, and a tired-looking waitress flipping through a notepad. Cass stepped inside, the scent of burnt coffee and fried food settling around him like an old memory.
He slid into a booth near the window, his back to the wall out of habit, stretching his legs out beneath the table. The rain streaked down the glass, turning the neon glow outside into something almost soft. He exhaled, rubbing a hand over the stubble on his jaw, then glanced up as footsteps approached.
âDidnât peg you for a diner type,â he remarked, voice low and edged with amusement as his gaze flicked up toward the unexpected company. âGuess that makes two of us.â
"No? What if I told you I was born in a diner bathroom?" Julie asked. She was actually born in the back of a car on the way to the hospital, but it was curious to think about what she looked like to other people. Maybe, the years of relying on her father were rubbing off on her, polishing her up. Still, she joked and smiled because she wasn't expecting someone to talk to her at this hour. She was also a little tipsy and trying to absorb the alcohol with something deep fried.
"Why aren't you a diner type?" Julie asked. Unusually chatty, but just as relaxed as he was with his legs stretched out under the table. She took a seat at the corner of the counter, just across from his booth.

Malachi DuBois was what you'd call a dessert afficionado. He'd never met a sweet treat he didn't like. Still, every now and then, he attempted to be good. Good was boring, in his opinion, but he was sure that his body had different ideas especially the older he got. Now, he was closer to middle aged than he was to his twenties and he needed to take better care of himself. That was what he told the patrons at the gym, and it was about time he started taking his own advice. So, he was starting small with smoothies; they were sweet enough that he could pretend that he was having dessert while being healthy enough that he could convince himself that he was being good. The fact that Main Squeeze was essentially Swolemates' next door neighbor helped. Maybe he could talk to the owner about a collaboration of some sort in the future. "So, he said," addressing the person nearby, "what's good here?"
The thing about Clearwater was that people were friendlier than she expected. Most of Julie's life revolved around bouncing around the west and midwest -- Joanne hated the cold and the rain. She did think the east coast's breed of friendliness was different than the west coast. Yet, the people in Clearwater never seemed to hold back. She was getting used to conversations with people in lines at the grocery store and the coffee shop. Now, she could add the juice bar to the list. At the question, she gestured at a name on the menu.
"If you like citrus, the mango passion is a go-to. Mango, passion fruit, and orange juice. No banana to overpower everything," Julie said without missing a beat. She fidgeted on her feet. Her work bag was heavy this morning and making her shoulder ache. "Unless you like banana -- then there's some sundae flavor that people always recommend."

"Hey, how ya doing?" Elio greeted warmly as the woman got out of her vehicle. He'd spent the last few weeks setting up. Even though the property had been here beforehand and didn't need much work, there had still been a lot to do. "I'm Elio. Lorraine had a bunch of nice things to say about you. I hope you're ready for a long appointment," he said with a small chuckle. Of course, he was more than happy to pay for their time. Keeping horses in good shape was never cheap.
"So I have about a dozen here right now, some I had hauled from my property in California," his parents' property, really, but he didn't need to explain that right now, "and some of them I recently purchased for the ranch. Lemme know how you wanna do this. I tend to keep 'em out on pasture, where I can. I don't like stalling if I can help it. I like them to be able to move around. I can go catch them in whatever order you want."
"Julie. Lorraine has a lot of nice things to say about you as well," she said, tugging her bag off the passenger seat of the van. When it came to equine medicine, Julie wanted to make sure she kept that skill sharp. Specializations in veterinary medicine weren't licenses or other pieces of paper. They were merely skills that the vet had to decide to use or lose. Julie wanted to use her skills for as long as she could. Lorraine's boss, Elio, was a great candidate for that.
"Where from in California? I got a mom that loved crawling up and down the seaboard," Julie smiled. She walked up to the first pasture, feeling at ease as some of the horses nickered as they padded around. "Looks like they're getting used to the new space. I like to minimize the stress for horses, so let's start with bringing in the most docile to their stalls and work our through, then we're not upsetting the herd all at once."

Alejandro set the cat carrier on the examination table. He brought his face down to the mesh opening and smiled at the cat inside. It was time for Gargoyle's pre-surgery examination. If everything went well today, the kitten would be able to be neutered in the next few days, and then, join the ranks of adoptable cats that called the frisky kitty there temporary home.
The vet that he usually worked with was out today, and Alejandro hadn't seen Mateo on his way in, but he trusted the staff at Rescue Paws -- they all seemed to have the animals' best interests at heart -- so when the door opened, he smiled and jumped into his usual introduction. "Hi, I'm Alejandro and this is..." The words sputtered out as he met the veterinarian's gaze. "... Gargoyle," he continued, hoping against hope that she hadn't recognized him in the same way he'd recognized her. Immediately and without hesitation. "He's here to make sure everything's good to go for his neuter."
Five years had passed and Julie accepted she was never getting an explanation, or answers, or even a damn apology. She forced herself to see the truth of it all: she was just means to end. A boyfriend who takes all his things, then a good portion of your bank account, without a word or a note or a text, was never really a boyfriend and you were never really a girlfriend. She also saw his picture months ago on Mati's phone; she tried to convince herself that she was being crazy, they couldn't be the same person. And yet...
Standing in the middle of the exam room, in the middle of her new life, there he was. Alejandro who disappeared five years ago. His voice doused her in ice. She stared at his face for a moment. Memories flooded through her mind in a tsunami. Instantly devastating and all-consuming. She cleared her throat around the lump in it. "Gargoyle," she managed after a moment, eyes narrowing at Alejandro's face. Was he going to act like he didn't know her, too? Something about that got under her skin. "Not living up to his name is he?"
She couldn't help it. It was a petty jab, but after everything, it was tame. Julie leaned over to get a look at the cat behind the mesh. "Hello, little one," she crooned, voice soft and kind. A complete opposite of what it just was. She reached in and gently coaxed the kitten away from the corner of the carrier. "Let's take a look at you."
Starter for: August & Open @clearwaterstarters Location: Pandora's Box
August liked to be a good manager and give his staff the breaks they needed and deserved. He never wanted them to feel like they were being overworked. While he couldn't help it on the days they were short staffed, he tried to make up for it when they weren't by giving them shorter shifts if that's what they wanted or allowing them to take longer breaks. He was working behind the counter and he heard someone coming in. Light jazz playing as he looked at the individual who now sat down at the counter. "How are we doing today? My name is August, can I get you anything?"
âIâve been worse,â Julie said as she settled at the bar. The âIâve been better,â was implied. She immediately felt the tense muscles in her shoulders relax at the sound of jazz. As far as days went, it wasnât a bad day, but she felt uneasy. It had been five years since everything with her ex. Was he really an ex if he just ran off with a good portion of her bank account? Yet, she couldnât shake the feeling that, despite her best efforts to fool herself, that he was in Clearwater. Right under her nose. Her eyes drifted down to the drink menu at Augustâs question. She could do with something strong. âJulie. Iâll have a Southsider, please.â

For most of Julieâs life she drifted in the background much like a cloud. Every now and then she covered the sun or the moon, but no matter what she tended to disappear. It wasnât her fault, at least not at first, her mother was cigarette smoke she burned brightly and lingered but never for long. So, who could blame Julie for not knowing how to stick around for people?
She tried, or was trying, Joy was Julieâs best friend. Well, Joy and Jiji. It was strange but in a new way, like learning to write, having a close friend. One to exchange house keys with and babysit pets and belongings when they were gone. Julie was seated criss-crossed in front of Joyâs coffee table with JiJi curled underneath, contentedly purring. The key turned in the lock, once then twice. âItâs unlocked,â Julie called.
She looked away from the TV and offered a slight wave. âYours is in the fridge,â she was referring to an iced coffee much like the one in her own hand. âJiji was crying for you so I let myself in.â
âI don't let anyone touch me," I finally said. Why not?" Why not? Because I was tired of men. Hanging in doorways, standing too close, their smell of beer or fifteen-year-old whiskey. Men who didn't come to the emergency room with you... who made you love them then changed their minds.

A STAR IS BORN 2018, Dir. Bradley Cooper
This just in! Julie Kim has just been spotted in town. Wait. You donât know who she is? The 32 year old veterinarian has been in town for, like, one year. Theyâre known to be quite quiet, but being caring seems to balance that out, or maybe itâs the fact that they resemble Suzy Bae. Personally, I'd love to know more about them seeing as how theyâve got those reading books in cafes, sun bleached pink roses, and gentle hands combing through your hair vibes. Maybe Iâll get my chance if I hang around downtown long enough!Â
