In honour of Lewis mentioning him on Grill the Grid (and in case you were wondering who the man is and why people on twitter and tumblr were shocked to hear his name mentioned in the year of our Lord 2025); a short run down on Adrian Sutil, his relationship with Lewis and the cause of their fallout.
CN: Mention of blood, stabbing, and stitches.
Adrian Sutil ā after Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel ā is the third German (or in his chase German-Uruguayan) Formula One driver with interesting links to Lewis Hamilton.
Sutil is a Japanese F3 champion and was in F1 from 2007-2011 & 2013-2014. In F1, he is most well-known for being the guy with the second most race entries without a podium at 128 race (or maybe first, now that HĆ¼lkenberg got his podium.)
There have been rumours (old Boulevard Press articles and forum entries) about him being gay, and while that is no one's business, it will become important later on. The rumour mainly stemmed from the fact that during his F1 days ā at least before the scandal ā he never had a girlfriend.
Sutil met Lewis during his Euro F3 days, and they quickly became friends, to a point where āHamilton's friendā referred more to Sutil than Nico Rosberg, if you can believe it.
The two of them were travelling together and at one point were even talking about getting an apartment together in Paris, even though that one never worked out.
There is a pic were it almost appeared as if they were holding hands (and this was during the Old Testament Lewis days mind you.)
Now for the scandal:
After the 2011 Chinese GP ā which Lewis one ā him, Adrian Sutil and Lewisā bodyguards made their way to the M1NT Club in Shanghai were later on Sutil would get into it with Luxembourgish businessman Eric Lux (evil coded name if you asked me) who at the time was a co-owner of Lotus Racing, after getting rich from selling Skype.
That night, after some verbal arguments, Sutil glassed him (broke a glass & stabbed him) in the neck with a champagne flute, but later said he only wanted to throw the liquid at him. And now guess who ā according to Sutil ā saw everything? One Lewis Hamilton.
Back in the day, there were some whispers that the fight had broken out because Lux had made some homophobic remarks about Sutil (and in an extent potentially Lewis.)
Apparently Lux started the ā at first purely verbal ā fight, of which security footage exists even though it is black & wight and incredibly low resolution. One German Boulevard Paper (incredibly unreliable, think German The Sun) said that it started with Lewisā bodyguards trying to make room for Lewis, because he felt mobbed by some fans. They say itās possible that Lux would not step away. They also allege that a woman spilled her drink over Sutil's pants and Lux somehow got involved (tough it is unclear how those things might be related)
What is clear, however is, that Sutil and Lux got into a verbal disagreement that ended with Sutil stabbing a glass flute into the neck of Lux, resulting in a cut that missed his carotid artery by a centimetre and needed 24 stitches to get it fixed.Ā Ā
In the aftermath, Sutil said that the incident had occurred is his off-time as a private person and he wanted to keep it private, but that he had been in an unlucky incident where he accidentally hurt another person and that he regrets it & has apologized. The media and FIA equally accepted that it was a private matter, which is why there isnāt much actual information about it to be found.
Multiple people in F1 came to his defence and said he was not the type of guy to get in a fight and that they know him to be really calm & gentle. His lawyer only said that they āgot verbally entangledā and that āit was just two alpha men clashingā (whatever thatās supposed to mean.)
They tried settling the matter outside of court. Sutil claimed that Lux demanded a large amount of money ā two years of his salary to be precise, which in Sutil's case would have been around 4 million Euros ā and for him to voluntarily step back from racing for multiple races. Interestingly enough, there were voices calling this an extortion attempt on Luxās part. With Sutil claiming, "[Lux] was threatening to destroy" him.
There were rumours Lux asked for the break from racing to either replace Sutil with one of his own drivers (as he was the owner of a driver management) or that he was trying to gain an advantage for his own team with Subtil sitting out a few races.
After the failed settlement attempt, the case went in front of a court in Munich, Germany in January 2012, where Adrian Sutil was sentenced to 18 months of suspended sentences as well as a 200 000ā¬ fine, which went to charity. He also lost his seat at Force India due to the controversy at the time.
Back to Lewis Hamilton's involvement in the story:
Sutil claimed he saw the whole fight and would be able to testify in his favour by supporting the claim that the stabbing had been an accident.
Hamilton however stated that heād be unable to attend the court hearing as a witness due to it interfering with the McLaren car launch that year (or maybe the team made him say that for PR reasons,) but he did write a letter that was read out in court stating that he hadn't seen the fight and therefore could not exonerate Sutil.
Between the absence from court and the letter he sent, Sutil stated that he no longer wanted to be friends with Lewis Hamilton and going as far as calling him a coward and saying that he āwasnāt a man.ā He did however mention that Anthony Hamilton send him a supportive text, wishing him luck for his court case.
Lewis Hamilton later stated that theyād talk at some point, but that he never went up to him to talk (and he changed his phone number). Sutil said he āneeds to grow up,ā among some other bitter sounding things (making him sound like a scorned ex-lover.)
In an interview from 2022 Sutil revealed that he was still waiting for Lewis Hamilton to reach out to him.

the difference with the way fans and media talk about drivers like alonso and hulkenberg vs lewis is exhausting and so heavily rooted in racism. like alonso and hulkenberg get an entirely free pass despite wading thru mud for the past decade without a glimmer of success... their presence on the grid is wholly unremarkable and yet they slog on, given caveat after caveat for their lack of success and their contribution to the sport inflated. and thatās FINE for everyone apparently. lewisā¦ who is fighting for so much and shows every single weekend how bright he still burns gets weekly retirement chatter. why? bc he might not reach the levels of success he had before? heās the only person in this sport who must prove he deserves his place in it every single weekend and must do so with a trophy. despite having more trophies than every other driver in the history of the sport. despite having a sprint win this year and a race win last year. still he has to prove he deserves a place here.

five arguments that are absolutely unnecessary and yet totally necessary:
Lewis doesn't ask Sebastian if he wants to go to the Met Gala. Seb doesn't want to go to the Met Gala, obviously. Christ, these days Lewis barely wants to go to the Met Gala. But he should have actually asked Seb before he started making plans. He realises that as soon as he sees the look on Seb's face. Butācome on. It's in New York, you hate New York, Lewis says. You'd have to fly. And wash your hair, he says, trying to lighten the mood, and, oh, Jesus, bad idea. Abort. Eject. Sebastian goes on a four-hour bike ride about it and Lewis stomps around his house, wallowing. When Seb gets back, he says, standing there in his cycling shorts, Do you love me, and Lewis says Yes and then But I don't always know how to show you, and I don't always feel like I'm allowed to ask, and when I guess, I get it wrong. Seb does come with him to New Yorkāhe even goes to the Gala, technically. But he doesn't walk the red carpet; he spends most of the night poking around the Costume Institute's exhibition while Lewis gets a thousand pictures taken with a boutonniere of alpine snowbells on his lapel, and then Seb talks his ear off about it all the way home.
They get into tiffs about music....regularly. One time Lewis cracks a joke about The Beatles being overrated and Seb has to get up and leave the room. Lewis thinks it will blow over. It does not. They genuinely have to have a sit-down conversation about The Beatles, on the living room couches and everything. Seb insists that They're not overrated, Lewis, they're incredibly influential and they're important to me and Lewis says I didn't say they couldn't be important to you, I said they were overrated, that's not the same thing and he wants Sebastian to let it go but they both have chronic cannot-let-it-go disease. Seb says But you're wrong and Lewis looks him in the eye and says Even if I am, I'm not hurting anybody, The Beatles are doing just fineā(Seb, interjecting, two of them are dead)āand you're gonna have to let me make fun of famous white guys every once in a while without throwing a temper tantrum. And Seb goes Ah. And then Hmm. And then OK.
Sometimes when Lewis opens a cupboard or drawer in a kitchen, he just leaves it open. It's not on purpose!! But once he's gotten whatever he needed, he kind of just...stops seeing it. And it drives. Sebastian. Insane. No it's not actually a big deal for any real reason, but the twentieth time he walks into the kitchen of his place or Lewis's place or an Airbnb somewhere and has to close a bunch of shit, yes, OK, maybe he slams one of the doors with a little bit of attitude. Ten minutes into the argument Lewis says OK but we're not even at your house, we're in my flat, and Seb throws up his hands and says Fine, but what about when we live together? and Lewis's mouth falls open. And after a moment he says What and Seb is turning completely red and says Ignore that, that's not the point but Lewis is already prowling across the kitchen and saying Say that again. Anyway when they move in together they get open-concept shelving.
Canada 2019. Yes. Really. Again. Pierre brings it up at dinner one night despite Charles making frantic silent gestures to try to dissuade him. It starts out as some light-hearted needling over the bread basket. You can imagine how long that lasts. It was a stupid penalty, though and So you should have been able to crash us both out with no punishment? You're lucky I braked in time and You can't control your car when you've been on the grass, you know that as well as I do, I'm not actually responsible for the laws of physics and Yeah but you're responsible for not putting your car on the fucking grass in the first place I'm pretty sure and Well thank God you got the win, you really needed it. Charles is eyeing up the emergency exits. Pierre is signaling to the server for another two bottles of wine. They give each other angry handjobs in the toilets before the entrees arrive and then have a perfectly pleasant rest of the meal, a massive new lovebite visible above Seb's collar.
Social media. Oof. They have a few good talks about it early on. Lewis is proud of them: real grown-up shit. But Sebastian still waves him off more than he expects when he tries to take a picture or video of him. Lewis is sneaking one of Seb working (still) on that motorbikeājeez, he's a dreamboatāwhen Sebastian snaps at him, Would you put that away. And then all productivity is done for the afternoon. Seb smiles sadly. And I want you here with me, not thinking about your Instagram. And Lewis gets it, he does, but: I wish you wouldn't talk about it like it's stupid, just because you don't like it. Congratulations on being above it, but I'm not. He stalks out of the garage, and Seb follows him. Don't put words in my mouth. I mean, it is stupid, butāno, listenābut you're not. And I didn't say you were, and I don't think you are. He sighs. I just want to feel likeālike the things we do are real, not something you're doing just so you can show people you're doing it. Lewis gets that, and most days he lies down at night thanking God that he didn't wind up with someone who uses him for sponcon. But: I was hiding for so long, he says. I want to share things. I know you're not ashamed of this, of me, but it still makes me feel that way sometimes. Seb sits down on the bench in the garden, exhausted. And the only way for me to fix that is to be on your Instagram? Really? Can I marry you instead? Will you believe me then? Lewis looks down at him for a moment. Will you? he says. Seb nods, concedes the point. I will, Lewis continues. But don't ask me like this. A smile twitches on Seb's mouth. And our wedding photos are going on Instagram, idiot, so make your peace with that now.

Thereās such a delicious enjoyment for me in scenes that are fights between two people that are so brutal because of how intimate their relationship is. They WILL bring up ancient history, they WILL stab you in all your weakest parts, and yeah most sexy of all, they WILL say things to each other they can never unsay. Itās fighting as an act of intimacy (derogatory). Evil sex scene. Nothing better
My heart is breaking in a million pieces because Tomura thinks he can destroy the world and go back to the League, but he doesn't know that most of them are either dead or terribly hurt.
He doesn't know Twice died because he refused to betray them. Tomura doesn't know that Mr. Compress sacrificed himself to save him, doesn't know about the way that Compress screamed he loved the League as he went down. He has no clue about what AFO did to Spinner in Tomura's name, the way Dabi explained so perfectly to Shouto the LOV and their philosophies because he always paid attention even if he said he didn't, Tomura wasn't there to witness Toga's breakdown over not being able to use the Dabi's flames or his decay even if she loved them so much.
At his absolute worst, even once the worst of his own past is over, the thought of them keeps him going.
as much as i understand shigaraki's death, narratively speaking, i'm also so goddamn tired of society needing martyrs.
what made me fall in love with shigaraki is that he's an excellent villain. all his character development built towards him becoming a more competent, driven, effective villain. he became an incredible symbol of fear just as deku became an incredible symbol of peace. this is who he was, in entirety. there is nothing else shigaraki could be.
when shigaraki told izuku, in his final moments, to pass on the message to spinner that "shigaraki fought to destroy until the very end," it really emphasized how it would have dishonored him to be vegeta'd, as it were.
shigaraki made it his mission to tear down hero society. this was his noble mission. this is what made him a hero to the league of villains. because he saw the systemic evils, he saw the evils that hurt his friends, and sought to destroy it all.
there's something to be said about trying to change someone who doesn't want to change, but for shigaraki, it was more than just trying to rehabilitate him from mass murdering. because to him, and the league of villains, what he was doing WAS the right thing. to tell shigaraki not to destroy would be akin to telling deku not to save. "you may not understand, but that's what makes me the villain."
there was a binary choice here: either he'd be left free to complete his mission and destroy everything, or he'd be stopped, permanently.
Izuku, by reaching tenko's heart, but ultimately stopping shigaraki, was choosing the only third option he had: declaring that he would not let all of society be destroyed, but not without promising that he'd do everything he can to reform it here on out.
shigaraki destroys. deku saves.
that's it. that's the bnha narrative in its most basic foundation. horikoshi did not fail to tell that story.
I think what ultimately fucking sucks about this ending is that it's too realistic. society often DOES need a martyr - or often martyrs - to realize that they fucked up, that they let an evil persist too long. they need a shocking enough tragedy to point to and swear they'll never let it happen again. society needs to be rocked to its very core before people can be motivated to get their heads out of their asses and work together towards reforms.
and that in itself is an evil, that people can't see how much harm they're causing or condoning without some horrific tragedy.
i think we're all mad at horikoshi for failing to follow through on the story because we didn't WANT the realistic ending. we wanted the hopeful one. the against all odds one. we didn't want another story about society using the image of martyrs to get its shit together. because we already know that story. and we're so so so tired of it.
especially when we know it only leads to a temporary peace.
because people forget. they put in enough reforms to feel good, and then get comfortable and ignorant again. when does that cycle end? when can we finally notice the evil in time to PREVENT it? so that everyone, 'heroes and villains,' get a happy ending?
I think our anger with the bnha ending is good. we want different - not just in fiction, but in real life. we're willing to hope for different. we should hold onto hope and fight for different.

i hate this weird trend in fandom where subtext is seen as a Bad Thing and is only done if the creators are too cowardly to commit to showing something. i hate to break it to you but nuance and layers are what make stories interesting, if you have no subtext then you have a very flat story
sometimes things are subtext because they donāt quite fit the tone of the story, or because the story isnāt about that (and if they showed it outright they would have to take time to explore it), or sometimes the characters arenāt ready to face it, or sometimes subtext is just the right choice for this specific story, or SOMETIMES itās just fun and interesting to have underlying themes and implications!!!!
also just because itās subtext doesnāt mean itās not deliberate or not meant to be part of the story. āwell if they WANTED it to be canon they shouldāve SAID SOā some of us can understand implications. some of us enjoy thinking about the media we consume and donāt just want everything handed to us on a silver platter. āwow i canāt believe the writers didnāt even realize what this impliesā im going to beat you to death with hammers
