he slipped through the window without a sound.
you were asleep on the couch. or almost.
the television hummed quietly in the background, forgotten. dinner sat untouched on the table, long gone cold. you’d waited for him again. for matt.
“...matt?” you called softly, blinking away sleepily as you looked toward the window.
he didn’t answer. instead, he stepped into the living room and watched relief soften your face. it lasted barely a second before you smiled.
“you’re back already?” you stood and walked straight toward him. too trusting. too tired. you wrapped your arms around him without hesitation. his body stiffened. he wasn’t used to being held like this. especially by a stranger.
“you should shower first,” you murmured against him. “i’ll heat up dinner.”
he played along. well, he was not exactly a good actor.
your lips brushed his cheek. he stayed perfectly still. that was what matt would do, wasn’t it? or maybe not.
your warmth lingered after you pulled away. then you started to leave. without thinking, he caught your wrist. too hard. you looked down at his hand.
“...what’s wrong?” you asked.
no answer. he simply watched you. instead of pulling away, you covered his hand with yours and gave it a reassuring squeeze. his eyes dropped to your fingers.
matt got this every night.
you smiled at him. soft. tired. patient. it made no sense. oh, not to him. you should’ve noticed by now. instead, you gently guided him toward the couch.
“sit down,” you whispered, pressing a quick kiss to his lips before disappearing into the kitchen.
he didn’t move. not sure what to do.
you hummed to yourself while waiting for the food to warm. like this happened every night.
his gaze wandered around the apartment. a blanket folded neatly over the armrest. a pair of matt’s shoes by the door. two mugs in the sink. a life with someone. one he’d never have.
you returned carrying two plates before setting one in front of him. “you’ve barely said anything.” you sat beside him. his eyes followed you. always directly. you shifted slightly beneath his stare. why would matt look at you?
“...matthew?” your voice had changed. just a little. softer and more careful. “what is it?” you leaned against him anyway, resting your head on his shoulder.
his arm moved around your waist almost automatically. too firm. he felt your body tense for half a heartbeat before you relaxed again.
“talk to me,” you murmured. “i need you to say something.”
he stayed silent. you sighed. not frightened or mad. you were concerned. your fingers brushed along his jaw before your lips followed, kissing him there so gently.
your fingertips lingered, tracing the sharp line of his jaw. “did you shave?” you mumbled, almost to yourself.
his eyes narrowed. another mistake.
then you kissed him. he froze. the first romantic kiss he’d had in a while. you did all the work. he followed a beat too late. copied every movement after you’d already made it. your lips parted. your brows knitted together. something wasn’t right. he saw it the moment you looked at him again.
you didn’t kiss him again. instead, your forehead rested briefly against his chest before you pulled away. your phone vibrated on the coffee table. you reached for it without a second thought.
his eyes followed the movement. your thumb unlocked the screen. he watched your eyes scan the message once. then again. your breathing changed. your grip tightened around the phone. slowly, you lifted your head. looking at him.
the silence between you stretched. the corner of his mouth curved ever so slightly. you stood so abruptly the coffee table shifted across the floor. “...who are you?”
he remained seated. watching you. the apartment suddenly felt much smaller.
“...who the hell are you?” you took another step back.
he stood. the difference in height became obvious now that you were looking for it. your eyes flickered over him. the shoulders. the jaw. the way he carried himself. things you hadn’t questioned before.
“get out!” your voice shook despite the command. he raised both hands.
“i’m daredevil.” mocking. the name tasted almost amusing.
your face twisted. “no, the fuck you’re not.”
he took a slow step forward. “so that’s all it took.” another step. “a text message.”
you grabbed the nearest thing within reach. a pillow. you threw it at him. it bounced harmlessly off his chest before dropping to the floor.
he barely looked at it. “he won't be home.” you stared at him, breathing harder now. “i thought you would’ve figured it out sooner.” his head tilted slightly. “it was disappointing.”
you kept backing away. he kept walking. not quickly. not threateningly. not trying to. simply closing the distance until your back touched the wall.
“...stay away from me.” your voice cracked.
he stopped. exactly where he wanted to. where he needed to. far enough that you couldn’t reach him. far enough that he couldn’t reach you. close enough that you couldn’t ignore him. close enough that you wouldn’t ignore him.
“you wait for him every night?” dinner on the table. the blanket on the couch. the lights left on. you hated answering that. “you always wait.” his eyes drifted toward the cold plates before returning to you. “...what kind of woman falls in love with him?”
“excuse me?” the offense in your voice almost made him laugh. he looked at you for another long moment. then gave a single nod. “...must be nice.”
your mouth parted to speak but something slammed into the side of his head. his vision snapped sideways. before he could recover, a fist crashed into his jaw. he staggered. another punch. one that sent him to the floor.
“you okay?” matt’s voice came first.
matt stood in the open window, dressed entirely in black. that fuckass homemade suit he had. his breathing was hard, his attention fixed entirely on you for the briefest second.
“yes... no... i...,” you stammered, frozen in place. “h-he didn’t hurt me... not yet, at least…” you were breathless. only then did matt turn his attention to him.
“get up.” dex smirked once through the blood in his mouth. matt didn’t wait. he grabbed the front of the stolen suit and hauled him upright before driving him back toward the window.
dex resisted just enough to make it difficult. not enough to stay. the last thing he saw before matt forced him outside was you. standing exactly where he’d left you.
one hand still resting against your lips.
matt’s expression hardened as he noticed. head tilting slightly. stopping for a moment but keeping a firm grip. then he shoved dex through the window.
