The other day my wife told me about this influencer who said she needed to go on ozempic so she could go from 130 lbs down to 115 and I really cannot stress the degree to which we have so COMPLETELY lost the plot with this glp1 shit. Like not only are people are going on this shit for purely cosmetic purposes, the cosmetic purposes are delusional. This is the kind of mindset that gives people eating disorders but now because you can get a prescription instead of having to starve yourself or enduce vomiting a big swath of the general public seems eager to go along with it. Body Positivity did not go fucking far enough because I am being so real when I say that fatphobia is more of a public health crisis than obesity has ever been
People making a choice feminism argument for Ariana Grande looking skeletal have me feeling like this
as i understand them, glp1s do 4 things:
suppress appetite
slow down digestion (physical)
increase insulin secretion
decrease sugar release into blood from digestion
in diabetes patients, the main thing here is helping to stabilize the bloodsugar, so since they're generally already reliant on externally supplied insulin (i think? possibly i am confusing the two diabetes types), point 4 is the most important.
for weight loss, they're all important.
by decreasing how much you want to eat and encouraging your body to metabolize faster and making what you ate take longer to turn into bloodsugar, you create a bloodstream with no spare sugar in it, and thus very little for your body to bundle up into big lipid molecules for storage.
carefully dosed, in moderation, this might even be good for a patient's health--like, i can see someone whose metabolism insists on giving them nothing to work with and putting everything in storage having an easier time reconditioning on these things and getting a boost out of the fatigue spiral, with the right oversight and frequent small meals. although I'd want to see a lot of long-term studies on the metabolic aftermath before i considered it for myself.
but handed out willy-nilly as a replacement for crash dieting, this is definitely not good for you.
the concept of using glp1s to shed weight is, essentially, that you trick your tissues into self-cannibalizing as though you're starving to death, because you have created the internal conditions of starving to death, without having to actually suffer the sensation of hunger.
so, uh. it's an anorexia drug. drug that gives you anorexia. quick and easy anorexia. medically induced anorexia.
possibly a little less bad for you than getting to the same stage of anorexia organically, as it were, since you're only getting the stresses and harm from Literal Starvation and not all of the stress involved in forcing yourself to that point, but most people will not do that so it's a slightly less awful version of an extremely deadly condition that's now available to way more people. not good!
