The name is Sebastian Smythe. And honestly? If you don't know who I am by this point in your life, well, then you must have been living under a rock for the better part of eighteen years. I'm a Parisian at heart, but a resident of Ohio for the duration of my high school career. After that I'll be heading to an ivy league and far, far away from all of the ingrates that make my life so laboriously difficult. A word of advice: if you're stupid, please avoid my message box at all cost. I happen to be allergic to idiots.
JESSE: [The semi-pixelated image of Sebastian could only have been so gratifying, though Jesse would be the first to admit that the genuine smile shone through the screen to make the webcam connection that much more welcome. Over his past month at UCLA, he'd come to realize that towards the thick of the semester, smiles and high spirits had become more rarities than anything. Although, it wasn't like he wasted much time trying to prompt smiles; being in college meant he had no obligation to anyone but himself--a blessing in the way that he could be as self-absorbed as he wanted without garnering any negative reaction, a curse in the way that he spent a remarkable amount of time reflecting on himself, and more specifically, the slow way he was beginning to regret his move to LA. With so much doubt having ruffled his feathers recently, Sebastian managed to be a welcome constant, his brand of humor both similar to Jesse's and, almost consequently, exactly what he needed.] I wouldn't call it lifeless, [Jesse started, pretending for a second that Ohio actually had some value.] I'd probably call it dull because of the lack of intelligent life. There's a difference. [He watched as Sebastian ran his hands through his hair in a familiar way, then gave a half-hearted shrug, not particularly focused on or fond of the question.] With a schedule like mine, everything's a pretty big list, and not all of it is worthy of your envy. Be more specific, and I might just regale you with tales of the west coast. [Jesse paused for a second, tipping his head down in a short nod.] Which is admittedly over-hyped. [For some reason, he saw no reason to sugarcoat anything when speaking to Sebastian. He hadn't been afforded the opportunity to be half so sincere lately, so saying candidly that LA wasn't all it was cracked up to be felt like a weight of Jesse's chest.]
SEBASTIAN: [Hearing the lack of enthusiasm in Jesse's voice when he spoke of the West Coast was a little unnerving. Sebastian was so excited about getting out of Ohio that he had considered that any other place would be better than that. The thought had never occurred to him that someone who made it out of Ohio would be unhappy. It was daunting to say the least.] I get the feeling that there's something you're not telling me. But [he shrugged] no matter. I was wondering whether you'd be completely averse to my staying with you whilst I'm in California looking at Stanford. I figured that the West Coast deserves my presence for a few days at the least.

Please tell me youâre not writing your essays while drinking that said beer? Because thatâs just a disaster waiting to happen.
Although I do wish you luck on all your applications. From what Iâve heard, they are very time consuming. Iâm thinking about looking into some of applications for the colleges I have in mind. It doesnât hurt to start early.
They are extremely time consuming, but I assure you that they'll be well worth it. Where are you planning on applying next year, Miss Fabray? Could it be that we may end up on the same coast?
All I saw in this was something about school work and then a beer. I figured you Dalton dudes were all about being book worms or something. Except for when youâre playing lacrosse or whatever.
I know it might seem as though I'm jumping on the bandwagon a little early, since my first application deadline isn't until December 31st, but I have to say that some of these questions are pretty damn difficult. Not too difficult for me, of course. I've made sure that I've studied hard enough and immersed myself in enough extracurricular activities in order to make my application a shoe-in. When you're applying to five amazing schools outside of the realm of Ohio, though, working on those essays can get quite taxing. A beer might be just what the doctor ordered, I think.

JESSE: [If Jesse had the desire to talk to anyone back in that sorry excuse for a state, the one Jesse was begrudgingly beginning to wonder about calling home again, it was be Sebastian. Snarky, realistic, and everything that complemented his own sense of humor, Sebastian had always been a casual friend to Jesse, someone who, depending on the circumstance, would be around to offer his services at the most opportune of times. His knack for being one of the few sane souls Ohio had to offer had easily earned him a spot on the list of very few people Jesse made time for, and it was because of Sebastian's near-VIP status that he agreed to arranging this Skype call. Whatever Sebastian wanted was bound to be interesting enough, considering he, like Jesse, never did much of anything without a definitive motive, so Jesse was particularly looking forward to getting back in touch. Now that Sebastian was in the same position Jesse had been a year ago, save for the full ride and the national championship titles, it was a chance to do a little reminiscing--and the fact that Sebastian was easy on the eyes didn't hurt any, either. After a long Friday of sulking around in his own melodramatics, (He decided to pass on attending his required gen-ed European Civilization course that afternoon upon deciding it was irrelevant.) Jesse took cue from Sebastian and set up his laptop, firing up Skype and switching his status to online while he finished getting ready. He heard the tone of Sebastian calling him, but his hands took the extra second to expertly fix his hair to be perfectly devastating and push the sleeves of his black shirt up his forearms; being a discouraged college student was no excuse to look anything less than stellar, after all. Settling in, he answered, allowing the image to unpixelate before he offered a smooth,] Well, if it isn't Sebastian Smythe. Tell me Ohio's undergone some miraculous transformation in the month I've been gone. [His smirk was pronounced as he gave Sebastian--or rather, the image of him from waist up-- a once over.] You haven't changed at all.
SEBASTIAN: [At the mere sight of Jesse, Sebastian could not help but offer a rarely genuine smile. As his friend spoke, Sebastian allowed himself to unsubtly look Jesse over up and down. Their friendship was certainly made all the easier by Sebastianâs fondness for attractive men. Jesse was perhaps one of the best looking people that Sebastian had the fortune to know in real life, and he made obvious this fact quite often. Although Sebastian had a host of wonderful friends who lived in Ohio, he often wished that Jesse would be among them. Not that he would wish the depravity and soullessness of Ohio on anyone - it was merely the fact that Jesse was sometimes the only person that Sebastian could talk to about certain things, things that he could not mention to Kurt or Artie or really anyone, but Jesse, since Jesse was the only one who could understand them. Sebastian found it difficult to talk to anyone but Jesse about his situation with Blaine, as well as his future, since Jesse was the only person that was able to offer any perspective.] Jesse, [he returned, offering up a smirk of his own.] I think you and I both know that Ohio was lifeless before you left, and will remain lifeless now that you are gone. [Sebastian shifted in his seat, habitually running his hands through his hair as he exhaled pleasantly.] Now then, I want to hear everything that youâve been up to. Make me jealous.
Some of you might know, but Jesus appeared onto my grilled cheese a few days ago and ever since Iâve been praying to the dude, Iâve always got what I wanted. Now, Iâm back on the football team and it feels awesome. Cheesy Lord needs to be a God and there should be a new religion called Cheesus, and now I can confirm that my religion is Grilled Cheesus. Respect the Cheesy Lord.
SEBASTIAN: [It had been far too long since Jesse and Sebastian had been able to speak properly. What with Sebastian becoming increasingly busy with school, lacrosse and college applications, as well as Jesse's workload at UCLA likely piling up, the two of them hadn't had the chance to truly catch up beyond a stray text message here and there, and to Sebastian, that simply was not adequate enough. Sebastian certainly was not as close to Jesse as he was to people who lived closer by, but he definitely wanted that to change. Now that he basically had a foot out of the door that was his high school life, he wanted to get closer to Jesse, who could very well become a friend who lived nearby is Sebastian ended up going to Stanford in the fall. And even if he didn't, Sebastian believed that Jesse was one of the people he had met in America who was the most similar to him, and one of the people with whom he enjoyed a carefree friendship. He was unsure whether or not Kurt was amicable to this friendship, but Sebastian was never really one to listen to people if they told him not to spend time with a certain person. He liked to judge people on his own terms and did not let their relationships with other people govern whether or not he was willing to pursue a friendship with those people. As a result of their not speaking for some time, the two had scheduled a Skype call on an evening where both of them were miraculously free. As Sebastian booted up his computer and logged into his Skype account, he realised that he was excited to speak to Jesse again. Seeing the green icon that indicated Jesse was online, he pushed the call button, realising exactly how long it had been since they had spoken properly and knowing that they would immediately be able to reconnect and catch up.]

I think I may have actually found a good squad, at least the CCD side of it - Iâm still waiting for the hotties Sebastian recruits at Dalton. And they better be hotties, I want to enjoy being flipped or standing on their shoulders.Â
With the amount of well wishers and passers-by, everything sort of became a blur. Kurt had insisted that he stay there for at least a full twenty-four hours, partially because he didnât want to go home â to their home â and be left to himself, but mostly because he was under some kind of false belief that this was a joke. It had to be a joke. His Dad would wake up, Kurt would smack the nonsense out of him for thinking this was okay, and then theyâd go home and eat dinner together. Nothing too greasy, though, per Kurtâs obvious request. However, when Kurt woke up the next day to an unmoving body, his stomach turned violently. The thought had crossed his mind every so often â about how this could be the end, and how he could be left completely on his own, abandoned by sickness on both ends of the parental spectrum. But, he couldnât. He wouldnât let himself spiral like that. Not when there was still a chance, however slim it may be.
School felt like a routine. He got up, he got dressed (he made sure he was conscious enough to match, accessories and all), he trudged from his car to his locker, and he kept his head down. The last thing he needed was to be kicked severely while he was already down. Because yes, while heâd been telling everyone the bullying situation had died down, it really sort of.. hadnât. It had actually gotten worse, but he couldnât share that with anyone. Itâs not like they cared enough to noticed, anyways. No matter where he went or what he did, Kurt was always alone.
Once classes ended, Kurt excused himself from Glee to go straight to the hospital, where some friends had promised theyâd meet him after the assembly. A small part of Kurt was disappointed that heâd be missing what he fought so hard for, but he knew there were much more important things at hand. To make sure he didnât get sick, Kurt stopped to pick up some dinner on the way there, the take-out bag sitting neatly in the passengerâs seat of his Navigator as he took the all too familiar route from the school to Lima General, his hands curling and uncurling against the wheel as he took slow, long breaths.
Much to his dismay, his Dad was still asleep, and Kurt sat in a chair across from his bed, legs tucked underneath him as his hand rested in his palm. His eyes flickered closed every so often, and Kurt only stirred when the sound of footsteps behind him caught his attention. His face softened when he saw Sebastian, his body slumping a bit at the hands on his shoulders, and Kurt gave a small shrug. âIâm as good as anyone would be in this situation,â he said honestly, voice rough as he cracked out a yawn, his back popping with the sensation. âIâve, um, I have food this time, though. And they make me go home at a certain time so I get enough sleep in a real bed,â he added, lips rubbing together slowly. âSo, thatâs a start.â
Getting up, Kurt moved to pull a chair over for his friend, settling it next to his own. His hands tugged at the arms of his own chair and turned it so that they were facing one another, and Kurt resumed his tucked in position as he looked at his Dad, chest falling with a sigh. âItâs weird,â he started, âto see someone like this when youâve seen them at their best. Heâs usually so full of life. But now ââ He paused, eyes blinking rapidly as he tried to keep himself in check in front of Sebastian. âNow itâs just.. weird,â he repeated, quickly wiping at his face. âHowâs Dalton?â He asked a moment later, head tilted as he spoke, more than eager to change subjects.
SEBASTIAN SMYTHE:
As Kurt spoke, Sebastian listened. His friend was a very honest person, sometimes to the point of being extremely blunt and direct. It was because of this that he knew that Kurt was not dramatising his feelings, like some other people were sure to do in his position. No, Kurt was merely sharing his truest feelings and emotions as they were. And yet, Sebastian still felt as though certain things were being left unsaid. It wasnât exactly that Kurt was lying. In Sebastianâs experience, Kurt hardly ever lied, and when he did, it was only with the purest of intentions. This was different from lying. Kurt was withholding something. Sebastian knew him well enough to feel it. He had a feeling that it was concerning school - especially since he had conveniently not mentioned school when he spoke of his general wellbeing. Under different circumstances, Sebastian would definitely have pressed his friend to reveal the more intimate details of his mind, but even the politically incorrect Sebastian, who was practically inept with social cues, knew that now was not the time to push Kurt to reveal more than he wanted to. Now was the time to support him in his wishes and desires. Now was the time to listen, with both his ears and his heart.Â
âIâm glad theyâre making you leave from time to time.â Sebastian swallowed. âAnd that youâre eating. Imagine what your dad would say when he woke up and realized that you hadnât been taking care of yourself.â he said, being very careful to use the preposition when and not if. The alternative would simply be too much for Kurt to bear. Noticing that Kurt was attempting to change the subject, Sebastian allowed him to do it. Odds were that he needed some sort of distraction at this time.
âDalton is good.â he enthused, a smile already working its way onto his face. âItâs great, actually. Iâve been trying out new lacrosse recruits and even though most of them are completely hopeless, itâs pretty fun to watch them attempt to look like they know what theyâre doing. Theyâre also trying to get me to find a new team captain to replace me. As though anyone could.â he added as an afterthought, with a wink. âAnd, you know. The usual. The classes are still hard. The boys are still gorgeous. Iâm still working on all of my college applications. Iâm actually planning to go away for a couple weekends to check all my colleges out. I was thinking that in the first weekend Iâd do New York, then Massachusetts and Connecticut, and do California last.â As they always did, Sebastianâs eyes brightened as he spoke of those far off places. So close to Ohio and yet so far. An entirely different atmosphere. An entirely different culture. Sebastian was unsure of whether he would end up on the East or West coast, but what he was sure about was that his future was indeed very bright. For the moment, he left out the fact that he was planning to ask if he could stay with Jesse whilst he was in California. That was probably not something that Kurt would like sprung on him at this point. âIâve also started planning for a trip around Europe next summer. I figured Iâd go away for about a month or six weeks and just do all of Europe before college. You know Iâve been dying to go back to Paris.â he knowingly smiled. Kurt and Sebastianâs shared passion for Paris was one of the reasons that he had been drawn to Kurt in the first place.
âNow then. Enough about me. Tell me about you. Howâs school?â Sebastian searched Kurtâs eyes, trying to convey everything that the always casual sounding question did not.
It was quite obvious, plain as day really, that Sebastian was definitely not the sentimental type. He was hardly ever affectionate, rarely teary and almost never overly emotional or dramatic. Generally it took a copious amount of liquor for Sebastian to ever allow his tender side to appear, but this was a highly unusual circumstance. In fact, it was one of the most unfortunate of circumstances: Kurtâs father had suffered from a heart attack and had not yet woken up from it.
Sebastian did not know Burt Hummel very well at all. Perhaps this was due to the fact that Sebastian lived in Westerville and hardly ever had the chance to spend time with Kurt at home. Burt was undoubtedly aware of Sebastianâs existence. Whenever the two happened to bump into each other, however rarely it may have been, Sebastian would curtly nod in acknowledgement or, if the circumstance permitted, offer a firm handshake and a smile. Sebastian could likely count the amount of interactions between them on one hand, and he often considered the fact that Burt likely believed that Sebastian was bad news (which may have been truer than he knew). However, regardless of Sebastianâs relationship with the man, he was Kurtâs father; the only relative that Kurt had left and the one that meant more to him than anything or anyone else in the world. Burtâs heart attack had undoubtedly hit Kurt very hard, especially as Kurtâs mother had long ago passed away. This, of course, meant that Sebastian needed to be there for him, regardless of his lack of a relationship with Burt himself. Sebastian needed to make sure that Kurt was coping, or as much as he could be coping, anyway. It was a new thing, caring so much for someone that he needed to be secure in their wellbeing. He had been fortunate to gain many friends this year, but there were few for whom he would go out on such a limb for. Kurt was one of the first on that list.
Praising himself for insisting to his father that owning a car in America would be absolutely necessary, and his own unreserved hatred for the American public transport system, Sebastian was able to make relatively good time as he travelled between Westerville and Lima. In order to make it to the hospital at four thirty, which was about when Kurt should have arrived, Sebastian had needed to skip his Advanced French lesson and leave the Dalton Academy campus at about two thirty that afternoon. Sebastian shrugged this off. It wasnât as though he needed too much more instruction in French if he had lived there for much of his life. And besides, it wasnât as though it was the first time that Sebastian had ever skipped a class, although this reason was definitely much more noble than his escapades with other classmates or older gentlemen he had become acquainted with.
When he finally made it to the hospital, Sebastian wrinkled his nose at the clinical smell of rubbing alcohol that permeated the vicinity. After inquiring as to where Burt was currently located, Sebastian hurriedly made his way to that room, hoping that he would be able to give one of his closest friends the comfort that he likely needed and definitely deserved. Finally, he located the correct room number and made his way inside the room. And there Kurt was. He looked paler than usual. Haggard too. As though he had not slept in days. Sebastian bit his lip as he surveyed his friend. This was almost too much for him to bear.
Sebastian made his way across the room to the chair that his friend was occupying. Kneeling down in front of Kurt and grasping both of his shoulders, Sebastian searched his friendâs face for any sign of emotion. âHowâve you been holding up?â
