I honestly think that what made the group become super close is the fact that they protect each other from people's criticism and insults. Because as we know all the characters can have some characteristics that could be easy targets against themselves during the trip:

Varian has his crimes against his kingdom which could leader people to still assume he is a terrorist or make fun of him for trying to do something like that and ecc...

Hugo, as well, is a known criminal and thief so basically would go the same as Varian. And, for the people who know his past, they would also make fun of him for being an orphan and being homeless for half his life.

Nuru: this one intrigued me the most but I like thinking that nobody knows she's actually a princess (except for koto's people ofc) as long as she doesn't say her name out loud. I think she would mostly be criticized (especially in DETERMINED kingdoms) just for being a girl trying to take act in something, or, even worse, for being black. I honestly think that this specific topic should be in tangled's world, probably just to make everything feel more real? (I have no idea about what i'm sayin). But still, i think it would be interesting if the reason she's get criticized was the same one as some people are criticized nowadays in the world.

Yong would probably also be criticized for this same topic, but with south-eastern traits (basically having Chinese traits in our world) for the same reason as Nuru: their reigns are both seen as less important and the biggest critics are about the physical traits of the people who live in these kingdoms. He would also made fun of after failing his inventions (canon)

By knowing eachother's problems i really like to think they would defend eachother from hate and, as i said, this would the group more united.

Because think about it, 4 kids going on adventures for some library that people believe doesn't exist and the fact they're vulnerable despite knowing 2 of them can conjur up alchemical serums and 2 of them could fight and make explosions. In the eyes of people they're just kids playing with “Dangerous Toys”, heck they probably weren't even taken seriously from time to time and for Nuru I agree, the fact she's the ONLY girl in the group and the fact she's black obviously she'll be shamed or worse misogynistic and racism shit will be said to her even Yong(Racism).

If Nuru says she's the princess of Koto maybe people will scram but then again some high egod kingdom wouldn't even care at all and still says racist and misogynistic words on her

Team Awesome are so brothers coded to me and I wish they interacted more in the show!! Ofc I had to redraw that one Spiderverse frame with them though because the dynamic feels very similar.
