On May 22, 1952, a major argument started in Scotland about the name of the new Queen, Elizabeth II.

When King George VI died, his daughter became Queen. In London, she was named **Queen Elizabeth the Second**. However, Scottish people looked at their history books and disagreed. Scotland had never had a "Queen Elizabeth the First." The first Queen Elizabeth ruled only England, and she had ordered the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots.

The argument grew worse when the post office put up new red postboxes in Scotland. These boxes had the letters **E II R**, meaning Elizabeth II. Many Scots were angry.

They painted over the letters, smashed the boxes with hammers, and even used explosives to blow one up in Edinburgh. This time became known as the **Pillar Box War**.

To stop the trouble, the government made a compromise. They agreed that future kings and queens would use whichever number was higher in English or Scottish history.

But for the postboxes, Scotland won completely. The design was changed. Today, Scottish postboxes do not show the Queen's or King's initials. Instead, they only show the Crown of Scotland.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👑⚔️
