  Located in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, Herculaneum (Italian: Ercolano) was an ancient Roman town destroyed by volcanic pyroclastic flows in 79 AD. Its ruins are located in the comune of Ercolano, Campania, Italy.As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is famous as one of the few ancient cities that can now be seen in much of its original splendour, as well as for having been lost, along with Pompeii, Stabiae, Oplontis and Boscoreale, in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 that buried it. Unlike Pompeii, the deep pyroclastic material which covered it preserved wooden and other organic-based objects such as roofs, beds, doors, food and even some 300 skeletons which were discovered in recent years along the seashore. It had been thought until then that the town had been evacuated by the inhabitants.

Pompeii, a city of vast proportions, we stepped into a world long gone but is so vivid and alive as if only a few small changes were needed and it could be lived in again. In 1983 the Mayor of Landerneau a town close to Brest in France decided he would like his home twinned with somewhere where the Welsh and celtic language was also strong. It led to a highly successful twinning arrangement between Landerneau in Brittany and Caernarfon in north Wales - which is still going strong 25 years later.

Passing Lands End on possibly the last leg home,by about 1am we will know if a stop at Milford Haven is best if the tide is going to be against us it would be best to wait. But we are on our way home which is great. ⛵oh and the lighthouse marking the cluster of rocks is actually marked on the charts as an anchorage!😂having a laugh methinks (at Penzance, Cornwall)
