Had kind of this exact conversation yesterday about how americans talk a lot about “multigenerational living” as this romantic notion when what they’re actually picturing is functionally a family commune where their still-healthy parents (mother) take care of their kids, contribute to the household, and help pay the bills. first of all that’s an incredibly narrow view of what older americans want with their retirement. secondly this only works before your parents start having major health issues where you need to be the caregiver. thirdly once your parents do not have income you are not splitting household costs. fourthly guess who does the childcare and caregiving and household tasks for a family of 7+. it’s not just that it’s gendered and the women do it. it’s that, if you’re living with your HUSBAND’s in-laws, or if you’re one woman with only brothers, you’re still doing all the elderly care. this happens in india all the time where the daughter in law or the only daughter in the family is tasked with the whole kit and kaboodle. that’s true even when they aren’t all in the same household but certainly this makes it worse. and are you going to kick them out once you can’t handle the caregiving?? I also hate this idea that grandparents are “free childcare” no they’re FAMILY. they aren’t a service that clocks out at the end of the day. and frankly 3-4 different disciplinary and parenting styles, especially from elderly white americans who DIDNT grow up in a multi generational home, sounds like a nightmare. “multigenerational home” and it’s twentysomething men living with their parents

Sorry to talk about Harry Potter again but when it comes to the slave race that Rowling put in her books, she said she based the house elves off of brownies. You know, those creatures in British folklore that clean your house for you because they like doing it and are offended if you try to pay them?

Why not just put brownies in your story then? Almost identical effect without all the slavery.

If you wanna make the Malfoys look worse just idk maybe they put a spell on Dobby to bind him to their house and he can’t leave unless the malfoys break the rules and they’re bad to him but don’t technically try to break the rules until Harry tricks them into paying dobby with some clothes.

There. Problem solved. You can have hundreds of brownies living at hogwarts even. And when Hermione misinterprets their situation and tries to thank them and start paying them the brownies start getting offended and leaving and this causes an actual problem for the school. Much easier to make a subplot about not listening to the people that you’re trying to help.

Just another way you realize as an adult that these books weren’t really thought through very well.

Layout 1, b/c 2 is too tight to make the bed, and I need a bedside table and a lamp.

The internet is divided, with opinions differing on whether separation or maximizing open space is more important.

Layout 1 focuses on separation, creating a clear boundary between sleep and work by keeping the bed away from the desk.

Layout 2 takes the opposite approach, placing the bed at the center and pushing the workspace to the edges.

Layout 2 would be a massive pain to change the sheets, and there's no space for a nightstand. Also, any adjusting of the window would mean having to climb on the bed. Layout 1 wins for me just because of that.
