Are these syllable counts based on Japanese syllables or English syllables?

Every language has a ‘beat’.

In Japanese, 1 beat = 1 syllable (Eg. Wa/ta/shi = 3 syllables, and 3 beats. Cho/t/to ma/t/te = 6 syllables and 6 beats), but in English, a single word can have 3 beats despite being 2 syllables. Eg, explain. Ex/plain is the syllable but because you stress the ‘ex’ a little bit, it becomes 3 beats. Eh/ks/plain. ‘Because’ is the same way. Be/cause = syllables but be/cau/se are the beats.

Do all haikus sound off to me because they don’t have the right ‘beats’?

*Small Might rounds the corner and sees everyone wide-eyed and staring at the other end of the alleyway — or at least where the end of it should be — where the darkness blends into scenery. Small Might sighs and walks into the alley, passing by and catching everyone’s attention.*

Small might: Alright. Spit them out.

*There is a noise of protest similar to a cat’s mmmrrrr but garbled and definitely not a cat*

Small Might: No, you’ll get a stomachache. Spit them out.

*A ptwo resounds as Stain shoots out from the darkness. He flys by Small Might and lands on the cold concrete next to Iida with a loud splat — much like a clump of wet toilet paper. He’s covered in some sort of iridescent slime that seems to clump together a bit too well.*

Small Might: Everyone else too.

*The darkness shivers*

Small Might: All. Of. Them.

*One by one, villains whom were reported missing are spat out into the alleyway, all covered in the same slimy substance as Stain. Small Might turns to address his confused onlookers and straight up horrified student.*

Small Might: Best we keep this from the police and press, no?

*He turns back to the darkness.*

Small Might: Come along now, I’m making stew tonight.
