I realized that in the past I kinda forced myself too much to avoid clichĂŠs. But then, after reading about creative strategies for music creation, it was crystal clear to me that clichĂŠs are a great source of inspiration and especially fun to work with.
Here I used a pretty common chord progression (refered to as pachebel progession) as a starting point in E major and built on that. You have probably heard that progression before numerous times. But that's okay, it's merely a foundation for me to practice writing/constructing melodies.
After my serum test, gemuerr was commenting on so called "one button hits". It refers to the practice of using a single, complex preset from a synth like Serum to make an entire hit edm/dubstep song.
This short song with a single drop is build on this joke to strengthen its point. And to be honest: it was really fun to make.
Serum is probably the most hip vst-synth on the market. I never bothered to much about it, because I felt quite comfortable with Native Instrument's Massive. After watching some YouTube tutorials it caught my interest and I installed the trial and created this little test within 20 minutes - that's how long the trial works and it was mostly browsing presets, selecting one that resonated with me and then mixing.
I will definitely buy it in the near future. With a price tag of 190 ⏠it's a bit pricey, but it seems worth it. Its interface is very intuitive and fast to use and can create a wide range of sounds. From aggressive bass like this one to dreamy sound scapes or just interesting fx.
I didn't participate in GGJ this year, but still wanted to spend some time doing pixel art â because that's what I intended to focus on if I had participated. So I spend a bit on a mockup for an idea I had a while ago.
A cat sitting on a roomba that can shoot lases and a mouse trying to get pieces of cheese. However I never could quite figure out which of both a player would control. Maybe someday I'll build a small prototype to find out.
I think I'll spend some more time this week to work on the mockup and explore the idea a bit further.

I recently finished the Masterclass by Joel Zimmerman and I created a lot of sound experiments along the way. This one is the beginning of something I intend to finish later. It sounds very Deadmau5y but there are ideas in the project file which evolve into its own thing.
Also it was the last sketch of 2016 I did. Hence the name

I have been doing a bunch of stuff lately that I never show publicly. From Pixel Art, to Sketches, 3D renderings, Design/Game Prototypes but most of all music đľ
And I'm now at a point where I think I'd benefit from feedback. So henceforth I'll post work in progresses and whatever.
Post Mortem #IGJAM16
This week I had been participating in the IGJAM16 where almost 200 particpants from 27 different countries came together to make games in 48 hours during gamescom. And it was easily the best game jam I have attended so far and an awesome experience.

Something very different. Played around with more complex progression and remembered that I had Native Instrument's Kontakt somewhere and used its orchestral sounds.
However this was neither done in 30 minutes, not in the morning. Took about 1hour of which ~15-20 minutes were spent getting my orchestral sample library up and running and then fumbling around with it. If everything had been in place, it could've been done in 30minutes⌠soooo. I consider this a 30minute morning loop. Although it's 01:45 here now - but it's morning someplace else.
No automation, no mixing, no sound design.
Not too happy with the outcome - progression/harmony-wise. But still quite happy. I tried a new workflow which I will definitely use again.

I really suck at finding names for songs and saving early and often makes it even harder.
To make the name "fit" the work-in-progress, I pick something that stands out or inspired me and let this generator generate names for me and I simply stick with it.
Now it takes less than 10secs to find a memorable name for a song. It may be a cheesy name, but it works to distunguis a bunch of work-in-progress/unfinished songs.
Another morning loop. Didn't feel very inspired, used a tiny motif to create a very simple/minimal melodie. Created a plucky sound in operator and the rest is pretty straight forward due to time limitations.
However I'm currently really addicted to those trappy hihat stuff.
Tried to recreate that future bassey pad-sound. Ran out of time because I was lost in my sample library and couldn't get a decent arp-sound working, used a Massive preset instead.

I started to create short musical loops in Ableton Live as part of my morning routine in ~30minutes. They are intented to be merely exercises for working fast in Live and Sound Design but I figured, I could show some of these.
This one was done on a monday morning and I was still a bit hungover from the weekend. Hence the name.
Sometimes my morning routine takes a bit longer than usual.
I wanted to draw web-comics for quite a while now. And I figured I should probably just do it.
I'll try to post at least one each wednesday at inflating space - a random name I had slightly other plans for but I thought it might as well be good enough for comic strips.
In order to stick to the schedule I try not to be overly ambitious to create "good" comic strips, just trying to stick to that schedule nomatterwhat.
They'll probably gravitate around my life as a freelance developer. Made-up and real stories - but I won't say which are which.
