Late into the night post about Jessica Drew (1610): Am I ungrateful for how few times she gets to appear at all? Damn right I am. Do I understand the reasons why? In a pinch. Do I hate those reasons? Ya bet. The simplest damming thing you can say about Marvel's last 30 years is that they're cowards and old guard running the show are doubly so. I hate that what art exists only gets to exist in the shadow that is market presence and brand recognition.
I'm genuinely happy that people find out about Jessica Drew and what few examples of visible queerness get to exist on comic pages that people can read in their hands. I just wish I was rich with more examples to share.

Now that the Reign of the Superman arc has concluded, I gotta say that the messianic aspect of this version of Kal really doesn't move me
Because there's already a member of the future [Doom Patrol/Injustice Gang/Super Friends] who fulfills the role of being a living counter to Anti-Life with the special talent of swaying anyone to their side...and it's Diana of the Wild Isle
And in her case, it's a lot more intriguing because it's due to the active machinations of the Olympian goddesses instead of being something that's just fated to happen (not to mention the exploration of the negative aspects like Aphrodite's curse)
Oh yeah, and on the subject of destiny in the Absolute Universe, I really prefer things not being fated to work out in any of the heroes' favor at first (which I understand might sound a bit nonsensical, given they'll obviously still find a way to at least significantly lessen Darkseid's influence on Earth-Alpha)
It just adds another layer to the "underdog" aspect of each protagonist in my opinion, which is why I'm a sucker for things like:
The ongoing concept of Absolute Wally eventually becoming his own worst enemy
The Earth-6160 Guardians of the Galaxy informing the Ultimates of their (at the time) inevitable loss

I am a complete fool and idiot for feeling anything about the fact that Absolute Superman is such a liberal story. It was never, under any circumstances, going to *not* be extremely weak, (christian) moralist liberal shit, and I deserve to have my head bashed in with a mallet for being remotely surprised/disappointed at this fact/development, just because of the edginess of the first few issues.

the book still insists on a mirage of absolute Kal-El as a saviour and redeemer, with a whole prophecy about him fundamentally changing the world, despite the obsession with making him a hopecore status-quo lib who never kills evildoers or destroys oppressive systems.
Considering the many facts and themes of this story, it literally makes no sense at all that taking Ra's to a Pakistani jail would've resulted in a fair trial and a prison sentence, or that GATES would destroy and absorb Lazarus Corp instead of bailing Ra's out and killing all the Smallvile survivors to control the narrative.

Given that Sin Es Tro doesn't even fully put his own philosophy into practice, I wonder if he justifies his status of Abin Aur by viewing himself as taking on a sort of Ksitigarbha-type role--denying himself the fruits of "full understanding" until all worlds follow the Doctrine of MU
Interestingly, the Blackstars didn't have anything to say about their Controller wielding the Gold Flame. Seems like they're cool with it because a supposed master of "total understanding" agreeing with their ideology further justifies their actions. That and the fact they can't hurt him probably adds to the blind obedience MU encourages.

I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, so I'd very much like it to keep happening.
Glad to finally get a good look at the full Spectrum of Light, with the explicit confirmation that OA and the Blackstars' hierarchical perspectives are inaccurate. Some things worth noting are the clarification that yellow is in fact a distinct color from gold (which explains the difference between Thaal and John's panels in Kari's vision back in #11), and Qard being more prominent on the ring than its contemporaries--as if the universe's inner darkness was seeping into its beauty to break down any nuance.
Sadly, it seems that the latter aspect is all Thaal could focus on, thanks to the Face of Steel planting the idea that Anti-Life is inescapable into his head. I find it really interesting that Mogo used to be aligned with the Adepts of OA, and it makes sense given a self-aware planet would be a model case of the "total understanding" they aspire to.
"Ooh, I know more than all of you and I've got really cool gold armor and I can be super cryptic about the Green Lanterns and the hidden parts of the Spectrum" fuck you, Thaal.
There's that AMM reference I mentioned, really like the confirmation that Aur operates on Martian rules--seems super limited at first glance, but perception and understanding are central to the way everyone operates.
Big fan of this showcase of OA-tech (in the same vein as "mutant technology"), with John exploiting Thaal's already flimsy will and his belief that Tomars can pose a real threat to him. At first I was pretty miffed that Jo's convo with Jess was offscreened, but it makes sense given what we learn a few pages later:
"I think I'm on Mogo's side" was a red herring. Instead of aligning with MU, Jess empathized with the planet being deprived of real agency and the feelings of isolation that come with that. Overall a really cool application of "correct action".
The Face of Steel might bring back Thaal as a full-fledged Manhunter, but what really piques my interest here is whatever "[resource] cycle" it's been managing (and its decision to double down on using Qard instead of any of the other levels). Looking forward to learning more about its origins and motivations.
In far more important news, my glorious king Simon is still alive! Sure, he's in a terrifying prison dimension surrounded by the dead, but at least he's got a new friend.
A concerning amount of yโall seem to think that being racist is a morally neutral position, instead of a prejudice that you are supposed to work on dismantling such as sexism, homophobia, and so on. Iโd suggest watching kindergarten level cartoons to learn about treating others like human beings but some of yโall already do that and itโs not doing the trick.
I donโt know how to say this without sounding like a broken record. A lot of yโall talk about misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, etc but donโt wanna summon the same vim when racism is brought up. Using the excuse that this is a predominantly white space is the same line of thinking as โboys will be boysโ when men do something sexist. A group of ppl being of a certain demographic that doesnโt experience a form of bigotry doesnโt excuse their perpetuating of it. If you think a guy should check his peers when theyโre being misogynistic, then you should check your white peers when theyโre similarly being racist. And similarly if you are disgusted when a guy tries to shrug off misogyny and say itโs not a big deal, and do the same exact thing when it comes to racism think for TWO SECONDS how that makes you look!
To neatly summarize, if you consider yourself a progressive person and combat bigotry where it appears but stop short when racism rears its head, itโs not a good look. If your compassion evaporates on the axis of racial discrimination, it will call into question your judgment on other bigotries as theyโre tangled in a messy web of oppression. Iโm not expecting you to be Malcom X up in here, but for the love of everything on this earth stop acting like itโs not a big deal.

I've grown to utterly despise conversations surrounding Marvel's mutants, because it always devolves into some "mutant oppression is reasonable because [something about Magneto, it's always something about his past actions]"
It's gotten to the point where I just agree with them and double down so they can see how absurd their rationale is.
There are plenty of malevolent sorcerers, might as well hunt them all down just in case and destroy all sources of mystic knowledge! Hank Pym created Ultron and a version of Reed Richards became a multidimensional tyrant, so might as well euthanize anyone who shows too much promise in too many fields of study! Belligerent forces from the other Nine Realms have invaded Midgard on God knows how many occasions, might as well burn down the rest of the World Tree!
And that doesn't even account for all the other superhumans who have and could cause massive harm like the Hulk, the Sentry, the Invincible Woman, etc. so we might as well set up a reliable fighting force capable of keeping them in check, along with the means to recognize any potential superhuman threats down the line...
